  1. The Fatback Band needs more love around here particularly for loads of Johnny Flippin's great basslines. Here's possibly my fave tune of their's although TBH there are many. I never tire of this ever 👉
  2. It's off their eponymous album, which I've got on Charly rather than Salsoul. Well worth shelling out a few sovs for
  3. Niiiiice! That's hit the sweet spot. MFSB link to Instant Funk, who were mainly session players for the likes of Lou Rawls, Evelyn Champagne King, O Jays...This was their big hit in the US. Love this one of theirs too
  4. Couple of tip top non-singles tunes from EW & F with Verdine in banging form
  5. I used to love gigging when I was younger, playing dance stuff but not in pubs. I get dispirited if people just sit or stand but get a full on buzz when they feel they just have to dance. To me it should feel like a party. I could find a band in my area that played such stuff I'll be right back in there.
  6. I suggest Sehnsucht, Mutter or Reise Reise. These have little in the way of slow stuff which I'm not fussed on. I'm not a metalhead and Rammstein are one of the exceptions to the rule as far as my own taste goes. IMO they stand apart from the metal crowd partly because they only sing in German, have a dark sense of humour, don't go in for all that fret******g nonsense, have a bit of a synthy techno edge and tunes you can dance to.
  7. I developed a hankering for a fretless solely because of certain tracks off No Parlez, various Japan tunes and several off Limping for a Generation by The Blow Monkeys. On the way I've had Dean, Vintage and Cort with several years in between with my interest in playing them occasionally waxing but mostly waning. All really nice basses, don't get me wrong, but outside of those tunes I've not heard any fretless bass playing that floats my boat. Some might be thinking, 'but what about Gary Willis?'. Sure he's a quality fretless player but I don't care for jazz fusion. In fact I can't abide it. It's been three years since I sold the last fretless, a Cort B4FL, and I've had no urges to get another.
  8. At the mo' while I'm in the orifice it's Kruder + Dorfmeister's excellent DJ Kicks compilation. Here's their remix of The Herbaliser's A Mother
  9. I've listened to Zeit, loud, a few times now and disappointingly IMO it's one of their lesser efforts alongside 'matchstick' and Rosenrot. But while those two albums each have 3 tracks that are among their best, there's little on Zeit that matches these; Benzin, Zerstoeren and Rosenrot (off Rosenrot) and Deutschland, Auslaender and Zeig Dich (off 'matchstick'). Looking at reviews on t'net there seems to be more love for Zeit than not so I'm expecting much disagreement here 😁
  10. Other band members giving me a hard time about my drink and drugs habit
  11. the way I see it, it's when a musical pattern from a song is repeated for quite a while during which time musicians will ad lib over it, dance whatever and then eventually either break into the start of the song or will continue it. It's used a lot when members of quite large bands come on one by one until they're all on and then break into the song proper.
  12. TBH music's never been a priority for me, just one of several hobbies which I juggle. I've played in around 20 bands all told but because of work and the kids I've never been to commit myself the way other band members wanted. Over the last 20+ years my job has taken me all over Europe and south east Asia, something which has contributed towards 3 failed marriages and the fading away of many friendships never mind band commitments. Nowadays, I'm ok with open mic nights, jamming with acquaintances and occasionally depping for a couple of function bands when necessary.
  13. Even though I mostly play fingerstyle for me it's a toss up between these two lines that are played with a pick. They're not 'bass solo' songs but I'd definitely call them lead bass lines and definitely cool as f***
  14. I've been a decades long Curve fan and have all their stuff. You can also see where Garbage got some of their ideas from. Back in the day I also thought Toni Halliday was the hottest woman in music😊
  15. I'm not a fan of Rush but thanks to a recent thread I was introduced to Envy of None and have since bought the CD, which is the mutts nuts. For me, one positive I have to say about Rush is AL's playing which avoids the cliches that bog down most metal and hard rock. The most off-putting things for me come from other two members, Geddy Lee's vocals most of the time and Neal Peart's lyrics/song titles.
  16. I quite like Charles Berthoud and Davie504's grown on me. Mind you you don't actually lean much from these guys. I posted before but I'll do so again...Mark Smith from Talking Bass is the man. No gimmicks, no chatting endlessly before getting down to business, Devine stylee (though i do like SD). Get's straight down to the point i.e. the tutorials but in a friendly and clear delivered manner. Even as an experienced player I'm still leaning a lot through Talking Bass https://www.talkingbass.net/is-it-luck-les-claypools-crazy-bass-riff-tabs-and-tutorial/
  17. Mark from Talking Bass does a really good lesson on 'Pow'. Best bass tutor on YT by several country miles https://www.talkingbass.net/pow-a-must-know-slap-classic/
  18. If I was a pro all I'd need is a StingRay, an Alembic Stanley Clarke Deluxe and a Jaydee Supernatural 1 or 3 series. I'm also a fussy s0d and colourwise it has to be natural or cherry red. No 'bursts', blacks, blues, whites/creams for me thankee. As it is I've two Corts and two Sterling Rays and that'll do me till I croak. Still, I like going into the stores and playing around with gear and ending up spending only a few quid on guitar strings.
  19. Right now our not-so-friendly neighbours are being entertained with some Killing Joke, more specifically the Pandemonium album and my fave track
  20. As an aside if trying to find new stuff to listen to, do you check out vids of unfamiliar bands etc on the 'What are you listening to right now?' thread. Or do you skip over those that don't look like they might be your bag and just look at those that might? I've come across a few I'd never heard of before and checked more of their stuff and even bought the odd CD.
  21. Up to around the late 90s pretty much everything put out by Ninja Tune was the bomb. It's not been quite the same since several of their best acts (IMO) left the label or called it a day. I've just been playing the excellent Flexistentialism comp. Here's a couple of great tunes
  22. Other than John Peel, back in the 80s the Liverpool/Merseyside indie/new wave/post punk music scene was buzzing so there was always the grapevine viz who was worth checking out. Frankie GTH, Echo ATB, Teardrop Explodes, Icicle Works, China Crisis, The Christians, OMD, Half Man Half Biscuit, Wah, Lotus Eaters, The Room, Dead or Alive, It's Immaterial, the La's, FoS.... Then there was Probe Records which was always up to speed with what was new and interesting. Great time and place to be a teen.
  23. Yesterday, flipping through several Festive 50 lists from the 80s- mid 90s I see that were it not for John Peel's show I'd have a much smaller CD collection, probably limited to what I saw on TOTP and Tiswas. So, out of vague interest, did you get most of your heads-up from JP, Tommy Vance, Tony Blackburn shows, the inkies or parents/siblings/mates?
