  1. Planet Rock like playing these a lot but TBH I don't see or hear anything that'll take the world by storm
  2. Hmm well Thunder have been around for donkeys and have never exactly packed out stadiums and shifted platinum albums. As for Black Star Riders, again they're no spring chickens and are mostly American
  3. So, the covid pilot festival at Download winds up tonight. An all British affair the headliners have been Enter Shikari, Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes and Bullet for My Valentine. In a normal Download year, these bands typically play on the satellite stages while US and EU bands pretty much hog the space on the 3 main ones, the exceptions being veterans like Maiden, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osborne and one or two current UK bands like Biffy Clyro. Once those former three retire/die off are there any Brit bands who could compete for the prime slots over the coming years?
  4. The Jesus and Mary Chain had the best approach to avoiding fake encores. Get people thinking they're going to a gig for an hour or so but then play with your back to the crowd and bog off after 20 minutes, calling it a day
  5. For me , a good example of horrible album art which puts me right off.
  6. Not my usual cuppa but GG seemed to have humour and a sense of bonkers fun unlike their prog contemporaries
  7. No bassists but there is/was Sam Cooke, Michael Hutchence, Steve Perry the vocalist with Journey, Todd Rundgren, Steven Adler the original drummer for Guns n' Roses, DJ Jazzy Jeff (as of with Fresh Prince of Bel Air fame) plus non-musos Linda Blair, Lord Byron, John Hurt, Francis Bacon (the philosopher), Walter Raleigh, Bill Bixby, Nigel Benn, Malcolm McLaren, Sergei Eisenstein, Frank Leboeuf, Dixie Dean, Tyrone Power, Sir Alf Ramsey, Mohammed Sissoko, And lots of YT, Tik Tok and Instgram 'stars' ! WTF. I don't get it, when has having a social media channel made somebody a 'star'?
  8. I previously mentioned a few fusion, modern jazz geezers who I check out nowadays but back when I was a young'un the biggest inspirations were.. Dave Allen, not the wry Irish comedian but the original 4 stringer with Gang of Four and then Shriekback. To my ears some the best sounds from a bass I've ever heard were on Shriekback tunes like My Spine is The Bassline Derek Forbes during Simple Minds Empires & Dance to New Gold Dream period. First player I heard who was right up front in the mix Simon Gallup of the Cure. Definitely a major feature of the classic Cure period Michael Dempsey, the original Cure bassman but his best stuff was on Sulk by The Associates. Really imaginative, out of the box pick playing. Steve Severin -that tone he gets on Juju onwards is fantastic
  9. Lost me there too. Looks like a 60s Portakabin there
  10. Isn't that the idea? Some noms listed are pretty well known in bass circles. As for women, I have to put my hand up and say none have inspired me. Doesn't mean I don't think they're any good just that bass wise I'm firmly rooted in funk and slap and the main influences have been the usual suspects and also some less usual ones
  11. I'm not much into fusion or jazz but they've thrown up a fair few fave players worth anyone's time checking out....Armand Sabal Lecco, Kai Eckhardt, Scott Ambush and Gerald Veasley.
  12. I'm trying to get my head around 'dusting a broom' . What does it entail exactly?
  13. Sure, there's that and then there's a whole new level of carbon copy
  14. I'm not the most ardent Zep fan but I'm familiar with their back catalogue. Planet Rock have just played an unfamiliar sounding track . Not having heard it before I thought it might've been some long lost tune unearthed from the archives. Then Paul Anthony says it's 'Get it on' by Kingdom Come, whoever they might be. I mean, the Plant style vocals, the Page style riffing and the Bonham type drumming are to a T! Anyone else too close for comfort they way they emulate such and such a band.
  15. Most of the bums I come across are pushy or aggressive. When I used to live in London, Waterloo Bridge was notorious for them. More recently in Cheltenham there are several bums notorious for their aggressive panhandling attitude and known to be both claiming benefits and having accommodation. You see them out on the streets in the good weather but they're nowhere to be seen when it's chucking down.
  16. Viz Garbage their debut is easily their best. 2.0 is OK but not as good as it's rep suggests while Bleed Like Me is the much better than its general rating. Disappointed with both Not Your Kind of People and Strange Little Birds
  17. That's for sure. In fact along with 'cats do crazy things' uploads I'd say reaction vids are the lowest common denominator in the YTverse, especially of the ' tweenie Taylor Swift fans react to Cannibal Corpse' ilk.
  18. Been on an 80s post punk binge with The Cure, Chameleons, House of Love, Comsat Angels, Killing Joke and these cheery chappies..
  19. Nope he's seen an opportunity to create a channel and make money from it so fair play. There are many others with vids that require far less input and talent and who are probably making more money than him e.g. putting up reaction vids. He's got 9.44 million subscribers and has 1.44 billion views - way more than other bass channels so clearly he's got major appeal.
  20. Yeah I second this because the initial euphoria might quickly wear off. Because of Pino P's playing on No Parlez I got a Dean fretless around 20 years ago. After the initial buzz of playing it wore off, I played it less and less as outside of PP I got little inspiration from anyone else. Eventually I sold it. Fast forward to 2015 and the urge took me again and I got a Cort fretless. I checked out the likes of Steve Bailey and Gary Willis for inspiration and while they are both top players I wasn't fired up enough as the music they play does nowt for me. I got my money back when I sold it just before C-19 hit.
  21. Normally I avoid anything that passes for sitcoms nowadays as they're invariably shoite. Based on the recs here I'll check out Ladyparts, Sounds interestingly different from the usual fare
  22. For my money they are just about the best live band going. Corey Taylor is a very charismatic frontman. The whole band is charismatic. I have all their albums though I wouldn't put Iowa at the top. Subliminal Verses gets the nod over that.
  23. Some metal bands indeed praps make up for the lack of good music by dressing up but there's those like Lamb of God and Gojira who don't dress up or have gimmicks. Heck, there's not even one (visible) tattoo in Gojira! In one previous post LOG and Fiver Finger Death Punch were lumped together. No! While LOG are mighty, hyper aggressive and and don't do sappy ballads or whine about how hard they've been done by, FFDP are the natural heir to Limp Bizkit, except that Ivan bloke is an even bigger tool than Fred Durst. FFDP are fkin awful. Their lyrics are among the worst in any genre.
  24. But we don't all dream of owning a Ken Smith, Fodera etc. Sometimes our dreams are tinged with reality. I'm not a pro musician and don't need to spend £1k plus on a bass. My pitifully modest 'dream' bass is a Sire Version 2 Marcus Miller M7 swamp ash 4 string in natural finish. Full price at Andertons, £669. Anything Marcus Miller endorses or has a hand in is good enough for me.
