I've never cared for their pre SNF period nor am I that bothered with their post disco period but the tunes they came out with from Jive Talkin to Tragedy were among the very best of the scene. I too am a big fan of the classic Chic period. Never quite the same after Nard died.

Ah yes I think I recall you saying you did. Are you also a bit partial to stuff that came out on the Mo Wax, Pork and Ninja tune labels back between the early 90s and mid 2000's. Dont think Ninja tune is quite as good nowadays, not since acts like The Herbaliser, Funki Porcini, 9 Lazy 9, Up Bustle & Out and Hexstatic were there. -

I'm having to do work today so have got this playing in the background Any others here partial to BoC and Warp type electronica in general? A bit of Autechre? Black Dog, Plaid, FSOL mebbe? -
Surely bands without any original members are just tribute acts? What makes them different from any other covers bands?

Howz about this people?😁

This is pretty good by the underrated Black Heat actually, further to my Brothers Johnson I've just come across this damn fine version of the same tune by The Meters

Hi. Not sure how old you are but back in the 70s when funk and disco ruled, the bass was the lead instrument. Many iconic basslines have come out of that era not least Chic's Good Times. In the 80s, bass was also at the forefront of a lot of chart songs with bands like Level 42, Japan, Paul Young's band, Wham etc

By several million country miles IMO this is the best cover of ANY Beatles tune

I've never played music for a living, pocket money yes, so I've never just focused on one instrument, flipping between bass, fingerstyle acoustic, electric guitar, drum kit and assorted hand and stick drums. I've never believed in formal music education, being of the view it's something that should be instinctive. I prefer to learn tunes not drills. I've heard many great musicians from developing countries in African and Latin America etc who learnt to play from family members or others in their communities. No such equivalent as Berklee in Cameroon.

To my ears Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and many others who came after are the vocal equivalent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai etc. showing the range of their chops without much feeling for the song. The women living next door bang out WH songs all the time in a Chinese water torture stylee.

Top track there off RTJ 3👌. It's a mite irritating when people dismiss all rap with the unfunny and unoriginal 'with a silent c' comment. RTJ are one of the few current groups from any genre that take a stand against The Man -

Been playing all four albums by Run The Jewels, especially the latest, released this summer. Definitely the heirs to other politically/socially driven rap/hip hop acts like Rage Against The Machine and Public Enemy but they mix righteous fury with humour. -
Cheers for the heads up on Gene Perez. Have to admit I've never come across him. Mind you I mostly listen to downtempo and ambient electronica where you don't hear much bass guitar.

Become a weird precocious child antiques guru like James Harries or another Young Tory boy like 😁😉

I've tried playing a fiver several times over the last few years but it doesn't feel right for me especially when I thump & pop, flutter, double thumb, chuck and owt else that's funk/disco related.

Are we hardwired for 4/4 time signatures?
Barking Spiders replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
I'd say the OP comment is true for those of us brought up on western rock, pop, funk, dance music etc. This wouldn't be the same in Brazil with samba and bossa nova being rooted in 2/4 while also featuring 12/8 . For many years I played caixa and rep in samba bands and I don't think we ever did owt in 4/4. -
For me praps the best ever rhythm section I've heard.

This from The Black Dog, taken from the new Fragments compilation of tunes recorded remotely during lockdown. Recommended to Warp aficionados -

Slap Monster ....."Wojtek Pilichowski"
Barking Spiders replied to dunetune_jazz's topic in General Discussion
Yep been familiar with his stuff for a few years now. This is a pretty good example of some monster slap tempered with melodic fingerstyle
