What have you got against slap bass?
Barking Spiders replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I think I know of you mean. You might see some of them at Musikmesse vids on YT. I'm a mahoosive fan of Miller. Remember seeing him play a Cheltenham Jazz Festival a fair few years ago. A great gig which I remember well. Not only was he playing some triffic bass but he also had a huge saxophone or was it a bass clarinet? And he has an impressive pedigree in his role as a sideman. -
Just browsing the Andertons site, carefully keeping Tinder open in another window so when she comes over the mrs wont see what I'm really up to. And that is I've a few grand in my savings account and for the last few days I've had a severe attack of GAS and am rather liking the look of this. Just wondrin' if anyone here owns a Sire?

Go on, go on, go on, go on..name and shame the guilty parties 😁 -
I was more interested in what he is saying about not allowing Canada to be a temp member of the security council. The Canadian government is complicit as the Trump one when it come to desecrating wilderness in the name of making money

some good stuff here from Scott explaining why Hair by Larry Graham is his fave slap bassline and that it's got nowt to do with the rata-tat-tat style -
I've been a bit slap heavy in recent years and am now focusing more on fingerstyle funk. Over the last few weeks I've been refining several Jamiroquai lines including Too Young to Die, Virtual Insanity, Travelling Without Moving, Runaway and You Give Me Something. Since then I've moved onto Mark Smith's lesson viz Vulfpeck's Dean Town.

I suspect you could be right. No doubting Nigel Clutterbuck has technical skill by the shedload. Sometimes I see buskers doing this sort of thing and usually people just walk by, including myself. -

I know this clip has been posted here before but's worth putting it up again as IMO it's a classic example of tasteful and purposeful slapping at its best, as well as being one of the best bits of bass playing I've ever come across. -
Damn right. I'm a big fan of MK's guitar style so much so I've nicked many of his chops over the years. However, those two singles are fvkin atrocious. Up until Little Creatures I had been a mahoosive fan of Talking Heads. It wall went south from there esp with Road and She Was. Hard to believe it was the same band who made a run of three cracking albums from Songs About to Remain in Light

As i was trawling YT looking form some tasty slapping I came come across this chappie, one Federico Malaman. Don't tremble anti-slap heads, this clip is a groovy jazz type thing with nary a slap or pop to be heard!😁

Music to chase away family members, friends etc

Dunno the cardiacs but I'm with your wife (so to speak) viz Kate Bush. Mrs Spiders mkII was a mega fan. This would have me running out of the house, into the hills, across the seas and far into the deep blue yonder -

I don't think the worst excesses of slapping are to be found on albums but among the ranks of full-time You Tube merchants. Seem to be loads of plankspankers of both the 4 and 6 string variety that spend most of their playing time thrapping their strings in front of a laptop in their bedrooms etc rather than making.. erm.. proper music. I see nowt excessive in Mark King's lines in Level 42. They all drive the songs and all have melodic edges that stick in the memory. -

Yep, even as a lover of slap I have to agree with you. This is technically impressive but is essentially musical onanism. -

Correct me if I'm wrong but I take it for most BCers who aren't fond of slap, Mark King is something approaching the anti-christ of slap bass?🤨 -

I'm interested to see vids put up by BCers showig what they consider to be bad slap -
I'll have to make the shameful confession that I wasn't really that aware of Guy or his work, which is all the worse as I see he played on the first two Orb albums which are among my faves. Anyway, that bassline is a cracker although I thought the song was by the Kane Gang. Anyway, they're Geordies too so I'm in the right ball park. I'll certainly be checking out more of GP's lockdown licks so good call viz the OP

I've always played the PE bassline with fingers near the bridge. On record it doesn't sound like it was played with a pick. Then again I'm not a fan of most pick playing unless it's JJ Burnel, Michael Dempsey or Stuart Morrow. Anyway, the best thing about DD songs were the basslines. PE is by far DD's best although Ordinary World, Notorious and Skin Trade are pretty good. But they didn't half come out with some stinkers like Is There Something I Should Know, Union of The Snake, The Reflex and Wild Boys.

This morning I was streaming the album Songs About My Cats by Venetian Snares. The 15 year old thing then walked in to the room and then quickly turned tail and ran upstairs back to her room, clearly distraught by her first experience of drill n' bass. Next up, the Richard D James album by Aphex Twin and and smidge of Merzbow if I sense her lurking by my door again. During lockdown, if you want some time on your own, what stuff would you put on to scare away pesky kids and any others interrupting your 'me time'? -
if it's good enuff for rock n roll icons it's sure good enuff for me! We need to counter the trend for black Adidas muggerwear

The pic of some geezers called The Clancy Brothers in another thread shows them in white knitted jumpers, although they seem to've always worn them Haircut 100 also used to sport white Arran sweaters Are there any other bands who've worn knitwear on stage? It needn't necessarily be Arran sweaters. It could be cardigans, V neck pullovers or polo necks. Please, synthetic fabrics don't count so no Peter Storm fleeces etc

They might now be a bit wary of me in my local bass merchant as every time I go in I have a tootle on some used Jazz or Stingray for a while and end up walking out with just a lead or some other low value item. Mind you I've loads of the bvggers now.
