Good to know of other peeps who are into this kinda stuff otherwise it's quite a lonely place. You also into other current or ex Warpers like The Black Dog, Plaid, B12, Luke Vibert? You also heard of any of these; Monolake, EchaSkech, Modeselektor, Moderat and Mouse On Mars?

I'm a big fan of the Warp label and have been listening to a load of their stuff like Boards of Canada, Two Lone Swordsmen, Nightmares on Wax and Autechre, in particular Autechre and the newly released NTS Sessions. However, I won't be recommending them to most folk here 😉

Very nice indeed and a big up for playing bass and singing at the same time. Bluddy hard to pull off. I'm a big fan of MK's playing and you nailed it. The rest of the band are right on the money as well. If you ever get down to Gloucestershire I'd come along to watch for sure

I've got a Sub Ray 4 in that finish but haven't noticed if there's any misalignment. There's no problem with the sound but I'll have a look. It wouldn't bother me if there was though

I get the 'all about context' comments' but if you look beyond the narrow confines of the rock genre, jazz and country guitar players of the 40s-60s could still run rings around the rockers of the 60s-70s e.g. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Grant Green, Merle Travis, Jimmy Bryant, Roay Clark, Chet Atkins etc. Well as far as advancing techniques goes.

These days, nothing I hear by Hendrix, Clapton, Page and other guitar 'gods' of their generation makes my jaw drop but when I still hear an 80s 'shred' album like Flying in A Blue Dream by Satch I'm still mightily impressed

I agree, bread and circuses and all that jazz. Back in the 80s it was all about Princess D's antics that kept the masses occupied. Now that younger people are less interested in the RF the system provides pop-up D list slebs for their delectation

When i was a teenage brat back in the 80s I was big into the likes of Vai, Satriani etc as I was more of a guitar than bass player back then. IMO I don't see why guitar players shouldn't be accomplished bassists. I think it's a bit strong to say the guitar playing in the vid is poor. While it's no longer my cuppa Darjeeling there's no denying these are skilled players and recognisably so. Anyway, back in the 80s, shredding had taken electric guitar playing far beyond what Hendrix, Clapton etc had been doing even if it sounds somewhat dated nowadays

I rarely watch Freeview other than the occasional engineering themed prog on Yesterday, rugby internationals, some old classics like The Sweeney etc and the horseracing on ITV. Most current output is lobotomising drivel e.g. Orange Wives of Cheshire/Essex/Chelsea/Sunderland etc, Lust Island, Mock The Buzzcocks , Britain's Got Mediocrity, 9 Out Of 10 Cats Think Jimmy Carr's a Douche yadda, blah etc. But my original question is of the chicken and egg type. Are the programme makers responding to demand or did they create it in the first place? The meejah make a big fuss of the more successful shows like Lust Island but this only pulls in around 4 million viewers so surely advertisers can't be making a load of dosh here.

Seems there's a gaggle of D-listers who are always cropping up on such guff e.g. the ghastly McCall woman. Could someone please tell me why there's been an explosion of utter bilge on terrestrial TV over the last 5-10 years, much of it mercifully confined to minor channels such as ITV2, ITVBe, Channel 5 etc? Have the general public become that more stupid or is it a case of TV production companies bunging a load of cheap-to-make sh01te against the wall and hoping some will stick?

I'm not a Rush fan but as someone who plays a bit of drums I know him as one of the greats. A very sad, tragic way to go for a man who seemed to be one of rock's good guys

I still like Colour of Spring, and esp Life's What and Give It Up, and think it's dated better than the previous two albums. I'd thought they'd be as big as Tears for Fears but maybe Mark Hollis' private persona didn't cut the mustard

Yep, that's cos we can't contribute much to threads like 'How was your gig last night' 😕. What with so many pubs and other venues closing down etc there's less incentive to form bands. And yet we still want to play bass.

I've not been in a band for over 2 years now and tbh find it very hard to pick up a bass other than sporadic moments when I play along to some funk tune, Ian Dury whatever. I've been playing more acoustic guitars and dobro, trying out loads of different tunings and learning from players like Martin Simpson, Tommy Emmanuel and Tony McManus. I've not yet given up on playing bass in a band, even if it's just to jam in someone's garage, but deep down know I'm unlikely to find one.

The guitar sound was pants but to be fair it seems they can do a lot better judging by some of their stuff on YT. Not my bag at all but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and say they were having a bit of an off night.

These are the two main reasons I packed it in over two years go and I was only a middle aged f@rt of 48 summers back then! I've said to the mrs I'll probably offload most of the rest of my gear this year and she's quite sad to hear this! I'd said if I got my mojo back after a couple of years then I probably never will. I've not yet and tbh I've been to a few pub gigs over the last several months but I've not seen any band that's made me envious

The thing that's odd about Later is it hasn't changed format in a million aeons yet over a similar length of time TOTP underwent several incarnations. My main beef about it is less what is included and more about what large swathes of entire genres are ignored. No electronica or metal for a start, well at least not in a very, very long time.

This is not quite accurate as there are 3 types; music one likes, music one actively dislikes and music one is completely indifferent to.
