What are you listening to right now?

I've got a big thing for Scandinavian electronica with the likes of Biosphere, Lindstrom, The Field, Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms and Ugress on constant rotation. Currently it's Norwegian dude Prins Thomas and... -
that's why i put inverted commas around 'rock' though IMO they are a rock band albeit one with many influences such as jazz. For me 'rock' ranges from landfill indie and the softer end (e.g. Fleet Mac MkII, Billy Joel etc through to bands with names like Suppurating FleshWound.

I'm not the biggest fan but an SD hits comp is one to have in any music collection. They are also one of the few 'rock' bands where the guitar solos always serve the songs. The one on Reelin' In The Years is a textbook example to any guitarist of how to do solos properly. Take note metally type widdlers!

Cant abide that old time bluegrass with blokes in stetsons yelping like they've caught their nads in a mangle. But I do have a bit of time for stuff from the 70s onwards which throws in stuff like folk, acoustic blues etc. I'm thinking of geezers like Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck etc

Some music just sounds best in the car!
Barking Spiders replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Ha ha. Yes, as long as there are at least 3 years between the offences and assuming you're within certain limits. -
Unlike others here there are entire music genres and decades I have no time for but there a handful of genres with stuff I do like especially electronica ,ranging from trip hop, glitch, global fusion and ambient to hard trance, acid house and drum n bass. In my car at the moment I'm going through a big box of CDs of in yer face stuff like Killing Joke, Pantera, early Stranglers, Pixies, Faith No More, RATM, NWA, Public Enemy, Rammstein, the Ices (Cube and T) and The Dead Kennedys.

Yikes, I was on the A46 travelling from out Warwick way towards Evesham and had Killing Joke blasting away. I saw a flash go off at the roadside and noticed i was doing 60 in a 50 limit. Ha kinda of ironic since I put up this thread just two days ago! Another fun half day at another speed awareness course I guess. -

Nah, it's nowt to do with sound systems but the music itself. I guess at home I mostly need to kick back with the missus and the progeny so playing stuff that's in yer face doesn't cut it. In the car you don't really want to be chilling when doing 70 max ( 😉) on the motorway. -

I never listen to 5Live in the house but somehow I tend to tune in on car journeys. Ditto Talksport. -
At home I mostly listen to downtempo, mid-tempo electronica but I find I these doesn't work so well for me when I'm driving. Conversely there's stuff I rarely listen to in the house but in the car that's another matter! I'm thinking of hard trance/house, drum n' bass and rock that has crunching guitar riffing and thundering drums from the likes of Rammstein, Killing Joke, Pantera, Lamb of God and later Anthrax. Just wondering if youse lot exclusively listen to some genres in the house and others only ever while driving. For me some music was just made for the car.

In the car I tend to prefer to listening to harder dance and metal stuff. On this morning's journey I have been mostly listening to Lamb of God, especially this track and particularly the bit where guest artist Chino Moreno of The Deftones lends his pipes from 3.05 -
IMO the singer has a thoroughly unremarkable voice though I will say this cover is no worse than the original, which itself is fairly dull and highly repetitive

Not sure why anyone should be worried about the word 'Isis'. After all it's the name of a goddess in Egyptian myth and another name for The Thames. 'ISIS', on the other hand!

oops, looking at the thread title I thought this was about Rees Mogg, Johnson, Farage et al 😉

EJ's run of albums from 70 -75 are the best of his career IMO and if you listen closely you can hear the contribution from the rhythm section plays a big part. Dee Murray is definitely one of the most underrated bassmen, a great shame considering so many lesser talents are better known.

Bass players who take their hand off the neck

ha ha beard oil, yes indeed. Now I only have a perma stubbly face (more out of laziness than design) - but was amused by all these beard care kits now available in Boots. Beard comb, beard brush, beard shampoo and wait for it ..beard glitter! Before I go any further I've not insulted any proud beard stylists here have I?😁 -

Mostly TED talks on topics of particular interest to me such as the development of sustainable technologies and systems, new eco construction methods, minimalism, linguistics, education and general psychology. Can get really hooked on TED and watch loads back to back. If anyone here doesn't watch them I recommend you should! The better ones often offer some light in this increasingly dark world! -
Yes I do after my previous wife named them when finding them reclining around the living room.. Peavey BXP...'That Bl**dy Guitar' Cort GB 74, 'Not Another One?' Cort fretless 'That's New! '

Punk - musically significant or not?
Barking Spiders replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Indeed though I think the US got the worst of that rather than the UK. Do you mean Boston, Journey, Heart and all the other glossy 'corporate' stuff? -
I've been to festivals where the best responses were for those bands, regardless of when anyone had heard of them before had loads of showmanship, banter and fun, upbeat or energetic disposition. With bands of virtuosos just focusing on their music but saying nothing, I've seen crowds generally drift away during their sets. One band I saw at a festival a few years ago who usually gets sneers but who put on the best show were...Limp Bizkit!. From the way the crowd got into it you'd never guess this is one of the most derided bands ever.

Punk - musically significant or not?

Point taken but I was only giving my POV not making a blanket generalisation but to my ears most of the 'serious' stuff was way too earnest and po-faced while the pop of the time, particularly after glam had gone away, was insipid and flaccid. Mind you, I think punk gets a bit too much credit for shaking things up when there were fine bands like Dr Feelgood, Eddie & The Hot Rods and The Motors who were offering an alternative before the Pistols and the Damned came along. -

When punk came out I was still listening to Three Billy Goats Gruff (being an infant rather than backward!) so was unable to appreciate it. In hindsight I can see how it gave a stale music scene a healthy, albeit a swift, kick in the cojones. I've seen reruns of 1976 editions of TOTP and man they're dire. Not prog but the 'kin awful pop of the time, though reruns of pre 1976 issues of the OGWT on BBC4 show the flip side of fluffy pop was just as bad; overly earnest singer songwriters, plodding proggers and dull noodly blues rock combos. Recently I've been listening to some punk and new wave compilations and to my ears many of the tunes sound fresher and more vibrant than most music released this month let alone what was around in 75-76. Sure there were loads of shoite punk bands , especially from the 2nd+ waves, but for me most of the best music made since the 70s can be traced back to the original punk scene.
