That's helpful thanks, I'll check it out. And try to figure out why it only happens now and then, and how to control it. I can see why it would be useful - I get badly distracted by animated gifs in banner ads or avatars or .sigs. They're even worse for anyone with dyslexia or other accessibility problems.

In the last few days I've started getting a view error where a post appears, not in the thread, but as a single page out of context. Sometimes I can go back in the browser and then back to the post and it gets it right, sometimes not. (That's why my birthday party post in Off Topic appeared twice - I couldn't navigate away from the first attempt so didn't know it had worked). See attached screenshot. This is only happening in Safari, not in Firefox, but other stuff doesn't work in Firefox so Safari is my default for BC. Do you know if this is happening to anyone else? Any idea why please? Any advice welcome.

GMR have moved back to Poland. The website seems to have disappeared but they're on Facebook. I have a "Flow-in" single-cut 5 as well, which was on the website (the exact one I have) but no pics to hand.

It does so much depend on both the style of music and the mix of the band. My ex-band - indie-pop - gave me a lot of scope to mix deep broody prog with bright disco-pop and all things in between - a 6 would have been perfect, but ironically I left before buying one. Now with Plastic Mojo, while we had our excellent lead guitarist, I used the low B a lot to put some depth under his high bright leads, but now that he's left (no blame, change of personal circumstances) we just have rhythm guitar (and keys) and I'm using the high C to add some detail and sparkle. If I could only have one gigging bass it would be the 6.

Interesting. I started on a 5, so that feels natural. Switching back and forth to a 4 has never been a problem. At first I kept the G string as a fixed reference point and I might or might not have the low B to drop down to. I've switched to fixing on the D at A5 as the centre point of the fretboard, and relating everything else to that, which seems more secure. I hadn't thought of this before, but it may be partly that the GMR 5 and the Aerodyne 4 have very different body shapes - they feel different as soon as you pick them up - and I've learned to associate that with the number and spacing of the strings. It's quite likely that a GMR 4 or a Jazz 5 would seriously confuse me. The 6 is taking a bit of getting used to. Mostly in the right hand - the string spacing is actually slightly wider at the bridge than on my 5, although it's the same at the nut. On the fretboard, that D is still the centre point.

I was there too. Not something I'd play at home on cd, or go to see every week, but powerful and impressive live imho. Watching how tightly the three drummers were working together was worth the ticket in itself. The setlist was a well constructed balance of older and newer material, and the sound - well you expect prog to be a bit grandiose and sprawling, and to keep structure and discipline as they did is a lot harder than it sounds. The first ten minutes were all drums, so anyone who left at that point missed hearing five excellent musicians. Does anyone know what Tony Levin was playing that looked like just the neck of a bass?

This is a very good point. I need a bass to be fairly light, which often means a bit of neck-dive. The Jazz Aerodyne saves on weight by slimming the body, but there's not much they can do about the weight of the headstock and tuners. My Ibby 6 is absurdly light (lighter than a typical Fender P 4!) but again the headstock is heavy. My favourite strap for both is a 2.5" rough suede - the rough surface gives it just enough grip on my shoulder to stop the neck-dive.

Perhaps I'm showing my age, but I don't want to need a screen and an internet connection for everything I want to do. I want something i can read on the train commuting to work, or in bed as I'm falling asleep, or put up on my music stand and try playing from without screen glare in my eyes. I want something I can take at my own pace without constantly taking one hand off the strings to hit the pause button. Yes it's good to have sound too, but that (imho) in no way means physical print media are an anachronism. Also, I've subscribed to BGM (UK) for some years now, and when the physical thing drops on my doormat, I pick it up and read it. Would I remember to go to a website once a month to see what was new? No. Is everything in it useful or even interesting? No. Is enough interesting or useful to justify the cost of the subscription? Yes. I'd call myself "intermediate" but still learn from @Steve Lawson's tutorials.

This is my only patterned strap. I wouldn't have bought it, but it came attached to a guitar (a wonderfully cheesy Soviet-era Bulgarian Orfeo rescued from a junk shop) and I think it suits the "folksy" look of the acoustic (Michael Kelly).

It does make me wonder though if we're missing some interesting possibilities in headstock designs. I've just found these - I'm just imagining a headstock carved in the shape of a dragon's head. (The head of my dragon tattoo is in the outline shape of a GMR headstock.)

This. I would have given up learning to play if I hadn't been so in love with my first bass. (I still am.) (In love, that is. And learning.) And I wouldn't practice as much as I do. Strings, as noted above by @lownote12 and @discreet. And number of strings - I'm finding the high C on my new 6 makes it easy to throw in bright little grace-notes or whole verses of a song maybe two octaves above the main line, which would be too busy with a good lead guitar player, but works well with a rhythm guitar. (Imho, ymmv... fun to play anyway and well received on its one outing so far.)

Very nice. And a lot cheaper than 'accidentally' acquiring basses, which I should really stop doing 😞 Most of mine are plain black 2.5". My lead guitar player plays a Les Paul gold-top on an antique gold metallic ribbon Souldier strap which looks perfect for it.
