Show us your rig of choice for the weekend ** Basschat edition**
jensenmann replied to bassace97's topic in Amps and Cabs
Last week I ran into a dirt cheap Eden 410XLT and used it rightaway at our gig. Happy camper, what a great cab. It´s extremely loud and cuts through very well. -
How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
jensenmann replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
I hope so... 😇 In the end I don´t care. It will be an evening with lots of fun anyway 🙂 -
Over here it looks like this: The basscab contains a JBL K140 speaker. The amping is a selfmade Basspreamp (FET preamp similar to Trace Elliot into a modified API 553 EQ circuit) and a KMT DC5 poweramp. The Ampeg Jet is used for my piano (late 70s Yamaha CP30).

Rush was my bass bible for quite some time. Geddy´s playing is so unusual, inventive, full of character and unusual ideas. Very refreshing. Many hyped bassplayers have less to say than Geddy. Sorry, still a fanboy after 40 years.

Rehearsal last night was a PitA. Not even one song went down without mistakes. I´m *really* looking forward to the gig tomorrow 🫣 -
Basses you sometimes regret selling!
jensenmann replied to Yorkshire Bottom End's topic in Gear Gallery
I ran into a metallic green Gibson Thunderbird IV back in the 90s. It was from 1966 with a custom colour. That´s the only bass I regret selling. It paid me a Wal Mk3 fretless 6 String. Later on I traded the Wal for another Wal which I traded for another Wal which I still own. This final Mk2 5string is my favorite fretless ever. So the Thunderbird sale somehow came to a happy end. But I still miss it. -
Equipment failures - always the worst time!

I had an open air gig at Christmas and right in the middle of soundcheck my TE GP12 SMX head died on me. Luckily it was just 10 minutes from home so I was heading back to grab the next amp. This time I took the larger TE AH600SMX (great to have enough amps...). I played the show and after the encore I left the stage just to hear some ugly noises coming out of my rig and the next amp died. I have no clue what happened there. Most likely the mains supply was flawed in some ways. Anyway, that was an expensive gig.... -
Thanks, mate. All recordings were tracked digitally, no tape used. I have two 1/4" tape decks in my room, but they are only used in my soundengineering classes to show our students a bit of history. Most musicians have no interest in the extra money to have tape between the mix and the digital master. Even more so my 2" 24 track is collecting dust in the basement and has not been switched on in 15 years. Noone is interested in that process anymore, at least not over here.

How did your recording turn out?

Vocal Microphones, what are you using?
jensenmann replied to Phil Starr's topic in PA set up and use
My singer used to use a SM58 which really didn´t pay justice to her voice. At some point I brought one of my Neumann KMS105 to a rehearsal and guess what... We´ve never seen or heard the SM58 again. I´m using another one for myself, btw. -
It´s a MB4 Midi bass, so it must be late 80s to early 90s. What makes it even rarer is the quilted mahogany body without facings.

My practice and recording amp:

Hi group I haven´t posted here since years. Life was rough in the past and left me not much energy for hanging out. But things are getting better so I thought I should post a few tracks I played on and recorded in the last few years. Enjoy!

Level 42 in Baden Baden, Germany a few days ago. Sorry, no pictures. What a great band, I´m completely hyped.

Hi Steve Did you actually purchase from them? How did it turn out? thanks Jens

Flight 13 duplication in my hometown Karlsruhe, Germany: https://www.flight13-duplication.com/en/starting-point They have the last ever made Neumann VMS80 cutting lathe, the Rolls Royce of vinyl cutting and run their own pressing plant. And they are definitely into punkrock...

My last holidays without bass were 21 years ago. That was a 2 month trecking tour in Patagonia. Other than that I always find space in the trunk of the car to fit a bass inside. It would not be holidays if I had no bass around.

Some more racks, this time from my control room:

I think I can keep up with that:

I´ve never drawn a complete circuit diagram. But let me search my HDs for the schematics I have everything stolen from 😉

My FET Bassman is not what the name suggests. It consists of a FET-transistor input stage, followed by a modified API 553 inductor EQ. The three switchable frequencies for each band are adapted to my taste and work very well with my Wal fretless. It doesn´t sound like a Fender Bassman at all. My Peavey is closer to a Bassman than the FET pre. Here´s some internal p*rn:

My bass rack: Peavey Alpha tube Bass Preamp (used for fretted basses) Selfmade Preamp for my Wal fretless TC2290 Delay/Looper KMT DC5 poweramp Currently not installed due to repair is a Yamaha SPX990 multieffect which sits in the stereo effect loop of the TC2290. I´m using it for reverb with the fretless Bass.

Really fun bass lines you're lovin' playing live!

My alltime favourite is Pete Townsend Give Blood: -
You´ll buy twice. The best ist the enemy of the good.... You can use even the lousiest microphone if the situation requires exactly this sound (e.g. SM57 on guitar cabs). In other circumstances it will sound lousy, though (e.g. SM57 on violin). With improving hearing abilities and monitoring situation you´ll realize the strengths and weaknesses of your microphones, esp. if you compare them to other mics.

Just edited my above post while you were posting.... So which mics did you buy?
