One thing worth checking is if the neck is straight. Some of the Alu necked basses bend under string tension over the years...and you won't be able to straighten them. The neck pocket on my Kramer isn't tight either...but they are lovely basses.

I'm looking into doing a 6 string fretless. I've seen 6 string thru neck fretted kits including all the hardware for around £120 ..with an Elm body. I'm not interested in the hardware..but would potentially de fret and go from there....but Elm?...not sure about that. I've also seen an Ash body thru neck with laminated neck....already fretless, ....no hardware for around £250. As I'm looking to play the bass..the resale value doesn't bother me at all. These are on ebay btw.

I'm not talking about how it's put together..I'm talking about the bare bones..BEFORE it's put together with the hardware. .....just the body and neck. What's the difference between an ash ( for example) body with through neck in kit form....and ash body with through neck made by Mr " mega bucks boutique man"??

hello to all. Looking at the various bass kits around..especially through neck type kits. If a bass kit has ( for example) an ash body, 5 piece laminated neck and costs around £100.... How would that be any different to a similar spec body made by big money makers? I'm NOT talking about the hardware. I guess what I'm saying is that if I pulled the trigger on such a kit and added high quality hardware is there any reason why it can't be every bit as good as a high end boutique bass? Any of you knowledgable people out there have an opinion? I'd love to hear it.

Lol..funny enough I thought the same thing..it does look like a Dalek. The P pick up close to the bridge is unusual..it gives the bass a J type sound that I really like..plus the Vox has a 2 octave neck that I prefer to the j type set up. Very good but very underrated these basses. I always fancied the neck thru model...it would be a great bass to pimp.

Well it FEELS like a new bass. My very first 'proper bass' of 30 years has just had a makeover. I have a Vox Standard bass. It was bruised, battered,worn out , pots with no knobs on etc. I've levelled and crowned the frets, given it a full set up, some nice rubberised aluminium knobs....and yesterday installed a Bartolini preamp...a 2 knob one. It plays and sounds like a new bass..I'm really chuffed. My baby is now ready for the next 10-20 years....and naturally reliced to boot. I'm a very happy bunny! They're great basses. I tried the 5 string version and was very impressed.

I've never tried one ..but think they look stunning.
