1.
Maple necks are normally lacquered so like the man says you will need to refin after pulling the frets out anyway so just use a tougher laquer.
I think what I'l probably do when the frets are pulled out is not to laquer as I don't like the feel of shiny laquer under my fingers...I will do my best to wear out the neck...(.by practising more)..and then get an ebony board put on it at a (much) later stage..when I will hopefully be able to afford it....unless of course I have totally fallen in love with the feel of maple under my fingers....just a thought.
 2.
I wouldn't use roundwounds with any fretless board mate. And someone on the EBMM forums had two sterlings, one with a maple board and one with a rosewood board. He then swapped the necks on the same bass, same EQ settings and all and recorded both of them and posted the recordings. A lot of people guessed correctly on which was which, but the difference was so minute, if any at all. Point is, it made no real difference that EQing wouldn't do. It's not the sort of thing where you'd hear it and think "ah a maple fretboard, would sound better with a rosewood one". As a rule it was VERY slightly brighter and attackier, but as i say, nothing a slight tweak of your treble knob wouldn't take care of.
thanks for your input guys. I always use rounds with fretless..I .just like the sound
 3. I am considering buying a secondhand G&L L2000 and defretting. The only one I have seen for a good price has a maple fretboard. Do maple fretboards sound the same as ebony or rosewood ones when defretted? I only have experience with ebony/rosewood. I know that maple is softer which might be an issue as I would be using roundwounds. Your thoughts gentlemen please?
 4.
This one? http://nuax.de/index.php/electric-basses-2...battlestar.html
Yup that's the one...very nice too IMHO.
 5.
Looks like a bargain considering the list is £1800......
My thoughts exactly...that's why I was asking about q tuners..I was so glad that you said they were excellent. The other thing that attracted me was that it was Bass Number 1...the original working prototype. I am a sucker for any kind of experimental/prototype instrument!!
 6.
Cool. If it had been a 5-string you might have been in competition from me. Full report when it arrives please. I might still have a punt on one of the guitars if the get re-listed cheaper.
There was also a pretty cool looking 5 that was reduced from £599 to £499. I'll give a review when it arrives..but I lack the facilities to post pics and sound samples.
 7. Just won this on ebay.Haven't got it yet .But I am very pleased. I really like unusual basses and this one fits the bill very nicely. Very high spec bass with in built tuner (on jack output) and those awesome q tuner pickups. Can't wait to try it out for the first time. 8.
He's quite fun when you get to know him Your choice though ..
You seem like a sound chap ..so I'll take your word for it....life is too short....etc Anyways ..many is the time when I too have engaged mouth before brain..so who am I to judge??
 9.
If you're used to Alembic electronics then the sound of the Q-Tuners won't surprise you. It's the extended and uncoloured sound that can be achieved through raising the resonant frequency above the working range of the instrument. Alembic do it with low impedance pickups and active electronics. Q-Tuners do it with a very cunning high impedance and high output passive pickup - I have no idea how this is possible but the sound is just so deep, open, uncompressed and responsive to your playing. Alex
Thanks for that..I love the electronics on my alembic. I've got my eye on a bass with some q tuners on it...hence all the questions. I have a better idea of what to expect now...so thanks again.
 10.
Ignore him :0)
Yes I think I'll do just that.
 11.
They are righteous. Come to Guildford for the Bass Bash tomorrow and you can try my RIM Custom 5 with them. Alex
Thanks for the info chaps..most helpful. It's a real shame that even on bass forums where most people are polite, helpful and civil that we also have people who are keen on being abusive I refer of course to Bass Fart..or was is Bass Farter..no hang on ...naaa it's gone now. Ferret maybe?
 12.
Alex Clabber has some. Prose bass is selling a bass with one fitted.
Errrr...pardon my ignorance but who is Alex Clabber?? and tried to google "Prose Bass" ..but got nothing....
 13. Hi has anyone tried any Q tuner pick ups. The reviews seem excellent and they look the T@TS! http://www.q-tuner.com/bl6.shtml
 14.
And here's me wanting to buy another one !! can't help it I just Love Musicmans.....
An immaculate fretless sterling went for £448 inc hard case on ebay last week. dude..so I think you better hang on to it for a while.
 15.
Hey guys, sorry for the delay on the pics of the overwater...i've been abroad with no internet....doh! I'll get them up tomorrow. To answer ya question about which progress it is.... i'm not really sure. I'll give chris a bell up at overwater and find out for ya. cheers. Scott.
Don't know about anybody else but isn't there meant to be an overwater 4 string fretless with a purpleheart top for sale (since january)...how come no price and no pics...I don't really "get it"
 16.
The pickup is in the bridge, piezo. It gives an acousticy type sound. Here's one of the Youtube links.
hey man i had an a6 and it was gorgeous the only trouble was the neck was a tad bent, and the brigde was a nghtmare. the new a6s are fitted with a better brigde, i just bought a a4 off ebay so ill let you know how it plays friday. the cort i had was well balanced and gorgeous looking. the balnce was better than my thumb six. i sold it and the geezer was well chuffed with t as he srted the neck out watch this thread!!!
Thanks for the info guys.
 18. Hi, have any of you guys had any experience with playing a Cort A6 Artisan model. What I want to know is if they are bona fide high quality basses or just 'good for the money'. Can they live with high end 6'ers.? Your thoughts gentlemen please
 19.
You just beat me to it! Wals are untouchable for fretless but way overpriced right now - if I was shopping in that price range it'd have to be a Pedulla. Fenders can be lovely but IMO need either an ebony board conversion or a coated board - a really hard board and ultra-low profile nut (phnaar!) are crucial for sustain and a nice articulate sound.
Hmm.never thought of a pedulla...or even heard one to be honest. But the ones I've seen seem very pricey. The Ibanez looks interesting though.
 20. I have heard that they sound very good..it it true? Would you recommend them? Thanks Raj
 21.
Got a point.... good enough for Jaco... good enough for... ...anyway, what's your budget?
Yeah I know that fretless tone is "in the fingers"..but if it were as simple as that then we would all be playing planks wouldn't we?..as it would make no difference 'cos "it's in the fingers man" However my budget is £6-700 for a secondhand one.
 22. Hi , I am looking for a fretless. I want more sustain than you could shake a stick at, a really good growl/mwaah when played using the bridge pick up..and sings like pavarotti. I especially like Kai Ekhardt's sound,he seems to get the bass to sing and growl at the same time..and with bags of sustain. I've heard good things abopout Modulus..but will they do what I am asking..or is the tone from these completely different. I am looking for a 4/5 string. Can anyone come with some suggestions that won 't break the bank? Raj
 23. Hi Mike, I'm still after a 6..so just as a matter of interest do you have a ball park figure of how much you would be asking for the Esh of yours. Sorry about the Iturra...just couldn't bear to part with it in the end SORRY!!!! Regards Raj
 24.
oh lawd thats hot...
Can you really blame me for wanting it ..I nearly freaked out when I first saw it!!!
