1. Unfortunately most ads for bass players I've seen say transport essential - that will hold you back so why not learn to drive?
2. And Macca (with Jet Harris) was the bloke that changed the perception of bass players preparing the world for the arrival of The Ox. I still know some who are quite happy to be the fat bloke at the back.
3. Sounds like they did not do a proper job but then the toggle was probably a series/parallel switch and you told them to wire it in series. You should have had the pre wired in from the switch.
4. You could try half rounds. Elites are pretty dull sounding. Does not help if you have already ordered mind. EQ on anything needs to be used judiciously. Always start from flat and just experiment. It you have an active bass you can plug your phones into that. Only get sound in one ear mind.
5. No. Its like saying anyone can play football like George Best if they practice enough. You have to have that spark of genius as well.
6. nice
7. Very few basses have pups near the neck. Gibson spring to mind. The purpose of having the foam under the strings near the bridge is damp the vibration and stop the strings ringing. Needs to be just the right thickness of foam so you may need to experiment. Lots of basses have had foam mutes over the years, Ricks, Musicman and of course the original Fenders had foam under the bridge cover.
8. +1 for Ibanez. Great basses and I had to spend a fortune on a GB to get better.
9. You are not helping me to resist the temptation to Darkstar this
10. +1 to all the above. be yourself.
11. No probs with the typos, it's those that cant be bothered.................. Not really familiar with your bass or amp but I do know this; to paraphrase one of the greatest - the funk is in the fingers. You can spend a fortune and buy the gear of your favourite player and still not sound a bit like them. As the Paul has already suggested - flats and judicious use of the tone controls will get you started.
12. Thats sweet. Makes a really good upgrade bass not not a lot of money. Keep bumping and prowling the wanted ads.
13. Dont know much about Vester but there is a danger that the pups and bridge will be worth more than the bass and at the end of the days you will have a cheap bass with expensive bits as opposed to getting a better bass.
14.
Just curious - why do you want to replace an entry level bass with another one? Don´t you want to treat yourself to an upgrade?
+1 - seems a pointless exercise.
15. There are always bargains out there, like the Fender fretless acoustic that someone picked up for £25 at a car boot. The trick is finding the sh*t and having the cash. I know someone who missed out big time cos by the time they had got the cash it had gone.
16. The original custom luthier on these shores.
17. How many vituoso bass players have platinum discs or can sell out Wembly? I can think of 2 or 3.
18. Leaving aside who played "I was made to love her" the bass on the later stevie wonder stuff is brilliant. Songs............ is one of the greatest albums of all time.
19. Someone here (99ster?) got a really nice 66 Jazz cheap off evil - probably cos most potential bidders thought it was a scam.
20. GB basses and EBS amps go together like bread and butter. I think this is an important subject that maybe does not get the attention it deserves and I often wonder if the guys that have not got on with GB basses have used EBS amps. Bernie used to have on his website that his basses sounded sh*t with one particular brand of amp so its important to know what does not work as well. There is also a synergy between amps and cabs that can make odd combinations sound really good or bad.
21. The more observant amongst us would know the dude is in South Africa which is why the sticky on luthiers is as much use as a chocolate teapot.
22. Never Too Much by Luther Vandross - its Miller time.
23. Hide it in the loft and lie
24. Jack Bruce played an SB1000 for a while.
