A classic, off on a tangent though one thing that strikes me odd about the Who is aren't they essentially a rock band? but followed by Mods, I never got? Perhaps someone will explain I can't?
When the Who started there was no such thing as rock. The Who were considered an R&B band (hence Maximum R& and R&B was the music of choice for mods (stuff like Small Faces, Kingsmen). Rockers liked Rock and Roll. Rock music came out of these bands, and blues bands, and some pop bands like the Kinks, the Beatles and of course the Yardbirds.
 2. Tried one a few years ago and very nice bass. Good range of tones but the MM overpowered the J (common problem with this config) and I found the neck a bit german. If you like that they are great but I preferred the Laklands I tried at the same money.
 3.
WHO'S BADGE BY? edit: sorry, caps lock was on.
You cant be serious? Whoever was responsible for your musical education should be sacked Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker - collectively known as Cream. As for fretless toons, I tend to prefer playing more melodic bass lines on the fretless but when I gig I just play what I feel like playing. Sometimes I'll use the fretless all night - other times I dont use it at all. Good stuff to look at is bands that had fretless players like Bad Company and Japan. You could always try some Jaco if you want to tie your fingers in knots.
 4. Brilliant - not seen that before. You can think The Who were over rated, you might not think Who's Next is one of the greatest albums of all time, but then someone has to be wrong.
 5. Be fair - he does need to practice and thats best done off You Tube. I'm sure most if not all basschatters can do better than this - or would have had better sense than to try it. Still no excuse for not having a bash when you have mastered the bassics.
 6. Hey fella. There are a lot of grumpy old men on here that non the less have a lifetime of experience. They wont even read your OP; Sorry but just cos its an internet forum does not mean that spelling, gramma and punctuation are not required and txt spk is OK. GOM
 7.
By "circuit breaker" I'm assuming you mean an "RCD" device. This will protect you, and the amp, from damage caused by incorrectly wired mains circuits. ALL players should use one of these cheap devices to reduce the risk of death or injury from electric shock.
+1. Same as earplugs. We should all look after ourselves.
 8.
If everyone in the world or on basschat had the same taste the world would be a boring place. So if you dont think the Who were the greatest (in their prime), dont think the Ox was the greatest, its not your fault. You will get over it and learn to live with it. Someone has to be in the minority - thats life. And if kids want to show off their limited ability with a Who tune - you cant knock their taste in music (well I cant anyway).

Oh I'm not saying everyone should like it. It's also contextual. Modern yoof has so many bands to watch and emulate and learn from. The Who were a giant leap for mankind and that is simetimes forgotten.
I think there is something wrong with people that dont love it - I was just trying to moderate my opinions
 9. Carlos, I've sent a PM.
 10. I thought you were going to try the Elites?
 11.
Hey! I've played there But we were entertaining the Christian Society freshers' group .. Darn! Must try the pagans next time... (mind you, at my age ..............)
You might need some little blue helpers?

 14.
On a completely unrelated blog just now I came across this quote and it just seemed to fit into this discussion: Theodore Roosevelt apparently. Not sure if he played bass but with a name like that I imagine he'd be a funk man.
As he was US President from 1901 to 1901 I doubt it.
 15.
What I'd do is get yourself down to London and go to Sound Control (it's in Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street), then go to the shops on Denmark Street, after that The Bass Centre and finally The Bass Gallery. Sound Control should have a decent range of Spectors and the Bass Centre has a massive range of Warwicks. Spend the whole day and try out as many instruments as you can. Then and only then will you start to know what you want.
+1 try before you buy
 16. Well done Chris. Why not stick it in the wiki?
 17.
Hi all Sorry to hijack the thread, are flat wounds higher tension the roundwound, I would like to try some but years ago I bought some by mistake, put them on my bass and the neck went like a bannana? this was before I knew how to do a set so I took them off again sharpish, sounded good though.
All except TI Jazz Flats. There is a pinned thread on strings and also some stuff in the wiki.
 18. Thats a reasonable price to pay for a well built bass.
 19. No we only do that with dodgy stuff on You Tube. You should see the wire when you take the old bridge off - just make sure you pinch the end of the wire under the new bridge.
 20. Now thats warped
 21. Been thinking about this - its a good discussion and raises some interesting points about whether someone is a real musician if they dont gig. Just looked at the Oxford Dictionary and a musician is someone skilled at music, which is pretty vague. How do you know you are skilled (or even crap) if no-one hears you play? I'm am reminded of the old philosophy conundrum - if a tree falls down in an empty forest, did it make any noise? Ok there is you-tube and the like now but thats not an indicator of whether you can play with other people - i've followed a few links posted on here and the chops on some of them sound pretty good - but some of them go to pot when you start counting the time. Its also not the same as playing in front of an angry mob in the roughest pub in town, and winning them over. My second gig with the Ferrets (one day after the first gig - two days after the audition) was in the long gone Whitehawk Inn at Brighton and my fellow basschatters from there will know exactly what I mean. I had been playing about six months and done one gig but loads of practices with my previous band. I had played guitar for 10 years so knew what the notes were, but trust me my spincter was pretty tight that night.
 22. To be fair this may not be a gig and for all we know it might be the first time the kid had picked up a bass. It was filmed sneaky which makes me think it was not a public performance. At least the kid has good taste in music.
 23. You dont need to be a virtuoso for this - and you can always go along to pubs that have jams/open mikes and just watch - see what everyone else is playing and get the feel before you get the courage to take your bass.
 24.
Thanks all for the answers.....I think I am going to buy some D'Addario and i wish decide between: D'Addario Half Round Bass 40-95 Strings ENR70 D'Addario Half Round Bass 45-100 SL Strings ENR71SL D'Addario Half Round Bass 50-105 Long Strings ENR72 D'Addario Half Round Bass 55-110 Long Strings ENR73 I always used 50-105, but I want change and try something different, I was thinking about 40-95 but can I have some advice about it? Which one of these should buy? Thank you again!
Most halfs only come in 45-105 so if you want to go light then these are the only options. Going light with halfs is the same as going light with rounds - be prepared to have to make lots of adjustments to the bass to get it playing the same.
