5.
And I dont have time to keep answering questions that get asked over and over again.

But you do have time to whinge bout it .
OK the next time some dumb f*** that cant be arsed to look for the answer posts this question I wont post a link to the wealth of useful info that has already been posted. If you are so clever Mr Moderator perhaps you can reinstate all the stuff I copied from bassworld that has just been deleted.
 6. Not exactly Wembley though is it?
 7.
And what's with all the 5 string diss? What about 5 strings with a C instead of a B? Are they excused?
Dont think sticking up for the humble 4 banger is dissing a 5. Someone has to.
 8.
Here's mine. 1990 'Ray V fretless. Unlined. Once owned by Boz Burrell (apparently) Currently tuned CGDAE. Another black one, I'm afraid.
Tunes in fifths - just like a banjo!
 9.
i tried this with one cab from a pair that our guitarist picked up on ebay, they looked home made with 15" drivers full range, yeah they sounded loud but really struggled with the low end as they farted a bit, needless to say as soon as they did that they got disconnected and will just be used in our PA setup. bit gutted really as if it had worked they would have made a cheap alternative to buying a new bass cab.

Which only goes to show you that a big driver does not a bass capable cab make.
Exactly!
 10. 5 string Jazz? Dont know really cos i've not run out of notes on a 4.
 11. Bass is not ice dancing - you dont get marks for technique. JFDI how it works best for you.
 12.
Sorry, I just needed a fairly quick answer. I dont have the time to come online, trawl through what could be a load of unwanted text, then leave smart arse comments on other peoples questions. Ah well......
And I dont have time to keep answering questions that get asked over and over again.
 13. I think it would be useful to clarify the context of the discussion. The question usually asked is: Can I use cheap PA cabs instead of expensive bass cabs because they have 15 inch drivers to save money? The answer is no. What I think is being asked here is: Can I use expensive PA cabs instead of expensive bass cabs to get a better sound? I think that is what we are discussing here.
 14.
Considering Roger found playing on records a chore, and they have only played one gig in 20+ years.........if you think the great Floyd are 2nd rate... Cant help following where the moneys at.....Most of,if not all,the backing bands Bassists on 'Later...' are using 5s,6s. (I wouldnt actually mind playing for Kylie,or the Spice Girls.....Heard that the pays good,I bet my morgage would be paid off by the end of the year )
I was thinking about Guy Pratt rather than Roger - although like many fans I wish they would put their differences aside and be proper Floyd again. My daughter loves watching video's and I sometimes play along with Kylie and even the Tweenies. The guy backing Kylie is playing a five but never goes below bottom E and the Tweenies is much much more difficult to play I think if you want to do pit work, sessions, play with horns (if the band plays in horn friendly keys like Eb), and all the other stuff Ross mentions then 5 is becoming much more popular and I wont argue. It is probably a lot easier if you are reading not having to change hand position. But one of the pubs I drink in has live bands every Friday and I often go to catch the bands. I have never seen anyone playing with more than 4 strings and if you are playing in a rock / pop covers band on the local pub/club circuit its probably all you need. I dont object to anyone using more strings but if you want to join a band on the local scene where ever it is you are unlikely to get the gig if you have more strings than the guitarist We will have to check out the next series of Later One more thing - the human ears are most tuned to the range of the human voice - thats why we have lost the senses of wild animals (we talk too much). Bottom E is the lowest note usually written for the human voice and thats why it is where it is on the stave.
 15. They do look the business. Remind me of a souped up active version of the original Electrovoice Eliminators that used to be my favourite PA cabs, though the EV had horn loaded bass as well. Once upon a time a 2KW pa rig would consist of large folded horn bass bins and seperate mid and high frequency amps driven by a rack of power amps - now its just 2 (very heavy) cabs. Large PA rigs are often made up of big arrays of full range cabs rather than separate cabs. Some bass players have used PA style rigs like
 16. Did not watch the Diana gig so can't comment but yes, even though I hate to say it, you need a 5 if you are wanting to pick up a lot of session work, recording or gigging, and Kylie's backing band, Spice Girls etc all use a 5. A four is only any use for second rate bands like Pink Floyd. But most of the guys playing bass in bands are still using 4 strings, and apart from Dave Swift who uses an SR5 most of the bands on Later, whatever music they play, use the humble 4 stringer - even the bloke in the White Stripes.
 17. Did you not think to look at this sticky before you hit the new topic button - it must have been right there on the screen in front of you?
 18.
BTW, that video creeps me out somehow... There's something wrong, and it's not the Stingray Precision, I can't put my finger on it. My opinion of course!
The music is sh*t
 19.
Curveball. The Bass guitar as a '4' string instrument WILL be obsolete in 40-60 years.
Dream on Ross.
 20.
Level 42 - Hot Water (lots of slapped dead notes to carry the line along, will help build a bit of stamina)
Lots of synth to carry the line along when played live. It starts with Larry Graham - Sly and/or Graham Central Station. It passed to Stanley Clarke (School Days is good) It went transatlantic with Marcus Miller (over there on stuff like Luther Vandross - Never Too Much -see the current BGM) and over here with Mark King and Level 42 (my favourite is The Chant Has Begun from True Colours - just put it on in fact) There was a fair bit by Stuart Zender in early Jamiroquai. Not done much these days in popular music (apart from Flea) but the likes of Marcus Miller still sell a few CD's/DVD's and fill reasonable sized venues but you wont hear it at Wembly. Kai Ekhart is pretty good and slaps fretless. Does your band want to do songs that need slapping? That would be a good place to start. Or are you planning to join the legions of bass players guilty of inappropriate slapping.
 21. Why oh why do the mods bother pinning stuff like this
 22. See here for Basschatters custom basses.
 23. Its not something I would think anyone is gonna be bothered with and the only way to decide is to get both to make your dream bass and keep the best one! Going on the number of build threads and posts on here I would have to say Overwater cos thats what people have got - but the most popular builder is Shuker. Many custom builders use their own pups and electronics.
 24. Thats cheap as chips - these are quality basses.
 25. There is a trade guide to guitar/bass prices similar to Glasses guide to car prices. Probably restricted to the trade though - you wont be able to go into Smiths and buy one.
