What he said. Just f*** about and find out what sounds you like and what sounds you dont like, preferably at band practice not at home. You can get a double whammy between 700 and 800 hz
After waiting for this long I am certain that I will never want to send her home to you! How come you get down to Bernie's so much - I have been twice as it is a fair old trip for me. I would like to have gone down recently to sort out the fingerboard stuff but just didn't have the time. BTW attached a pic of the new fingerboard for others to see as I know you have seen it already. Come to think of it you have seen more of my bass then I ever have!
Whats the wood?

any recommendations for a cab around 600 - 700 quid?
bass_ferret replied to Zoe_BillySheehan's topic in Amps and Cabs
He should be able to get something nice for that sort of money. Dont assume that a 4x10/1x15 will sound better than 2x4x10 or 2x1x15 though. -

Thats the point. Normally web sites dont specify the frequency, nor often the full citation of 1 watt at 1 metre, they just say sensitivity 100dB; Frequency Response 40k to 20k etc.

What is it with trying to find a decent music shop?
bass_ferret replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
I guess it depends where you are. My local music shops offer a good selection. But then I do live quite near GAK ! -
Bugger. I was all set to order another GB and this thread has made me think about getting a B2 !

Sorry is the budget £7-800 including the Ashdown or plus the Ashdown? If its including the Ashdown I dont really see it as an improvement as your Mag rig is £600 from the Gallery.

Quite like the SZ apart from the 12th fret. Must be getting soft in my old age
Thing is, the only way to actually get to know how a cabinet works is to try it in person. It's a shame, really, because by reading the data sheet, if the specs are real, you could get a vague "hint", at least, of how the cab may sound.
Absolutely. But with so much gear being bought from etailers, ebay and this forum it is not always possible to listen first. Thats why going to the local gig circuit (not stadiums) and local music shops are so important for listening to bass gear.
Sounds like the cab the problem - rather than the head. Rated at 500w, it should be giving you a clean sound whatever the head.
????????????????????????????? Have you not read the rest of the thread?
I've been using the same head for a number of years, and it's given me this sort of problem with everything i've used it with. the clip light goes on when i turn it past 50% at all, and sounds very very distorted, through all 3 of my cabs, using all the speaker cables in my band's possession. I'm fairly certain i've diagnosed this correctly. you mentioned that it might need the tube replaced? is that an easy thing to try out?

well on my amp, there is a light for DDT, and a separate red light for clipping. the clipping light usually comes on first, and the sound is distorted before either of them turn on.
That just confirms to me that there is a fault with the amp. Whether its worth fixing is not really anything we can advise you on, you need a tech. If it is being used as an excuse to buy a new amp I can recommend the Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 to add to the other options suggested. Worth a listen.

Dont forget there is a relationship between sensitivity and frequency response. The sensitivity is measured by 1watt at 1 metre. This means they stick a mic 1m in front of the cab in a padded cell, and feed it with a generated signal where the frequency is varied. This gives the frequency response and the highest point on the frequency response is given as sensitivity. The frequency response can change with more power so is probably measured for lots of different power inputs and the best results chosen. Or they just make it up. Am I a cynical old bastard
Never said so, I just said that 1x15" cabs are generally darker, more low-midrangey at least. I know that many 4x10" today can actually go deeper and lower than most 1x15", but coupling a 2x10"/4x10" with a 1x15" still yields interesting results due to the difference in dynamic and frequency response of the cabs. Anyway, yes, you should check what you've got first. I just assumed you had already thought of this
Interesting being the operative word. When mixing cabs, unless the cabs have been designed to be complimentary there will be phase cancellation occuring somewhere in the frequency range, the interesting thing is where. For this reason some like me dont like mixing cabs with different drivers.

I dont know how easy it is to replace the tube, and I guess you dont have a manual. I can't remember seeing Peavey manuals online so it might be worth a repair guy looking at it. Dont be surprised it the clip light comes on at 50% as this is dependant on a lot of things like the input level. An amp will only output its maximum rated power, and the DDT is just a limiter that puts on hard compression when the threshold is reached, but I would not expect it to distort. It would be worth you reading the basschat wiki to see how it all works. I have never run my peavey amps with the DDT on all the time cos they did not sound so good despite the claims the effect it is inaudible. It is awarning not a target

Like Simon says, its the result of a european directive on elf and safety of staff. Just like the smoking directive that ended up as a total ban in the UK and is ignored by most of europe, you can rely on new labours government of lawyers making a total cock of it, but the legislation has already been passed so the petition is pointless. The ridiculous article in the mail is just rubbish, like the mails outcry over Wetherspoons selling IPA for 99p. As if binge drinking chavs drink IPA or go to live music pubs. Just shows how stupid and ignorant they are.

I am not familiar with the Peavey Pro-bass 500 but I presume it has the DDT to stop the power amp clipping. IIRC its got some full parametric EQ so some fairly extreme settings are possible. Set all the EQ to flat. Its got a tube pre-amp so its possible the tube is knackered. Try the amp with a different cab. Dont assume cos the Avatar is brand new its not faulty. You will be pretty pissed if you pony up for a new amp and the cab is faulty so you have to make sure what the problem is. Check the speaker cable. Make sure you are not using a signal lead for speaker cable. Does the Avatar have speakon. Do your other cabs have speakon. Can you run them all up using the same leads. If the amp farts with all your cabs then it needs repairing or replacing. Dont assume it will sound great mixed up with your other cabs. Mixing cabs produces unpredictable results so make sure you have a good listen. And the view that 15 cabs go lower than 4x10's is a very out of date view.
Just a random observation / whinge... Why are cab builders so intent to make anonymous black boxes? Surely a little flair won't hurt...
Amen to that. EBS Prolines have chrome grills but the Neoline are black. Must weigh less.
