1. If it sounds good it is good. But generally, mixing different cabs produces upredicatble results and can sound odd because of phase cancellation.
2. Thats Bernie Goodfellow !
3.
Question is...how much and, as Bass_ferret pointed out, how does it stack up against the GBE750?
The GBE750 is 33 lbs. Thats why I did not buy one. The GBE1200 is 42 lbs.
4. Looks like a GBE750 preamp and class D power. Not a lot of bass players need two inputs, and there is always an EBS Microbass II if you have to have it. Works very well with my Shuttle.
5. You didn't fancy the GB then?
6. Your sound is only as good as the weakest link. You are the weakest link, goodbye
7. Cheap as chips, as old orange face would say
8. Had one. Sold it. They are very very heavy.
9. Difference to what with the valve pre on the Shuttle? You cant turn it off but you do have the flexibility to send little or all of your signal through it. I find mine is really responsive and if you set it up on the cusp, just digging in a little more can really change the dynamics.
10. Stradivarius. Nuff said?
11. Practicalities! The OP lives in Falkirk
12. I agree with you - there is no substitute for a proper valve amp. The problem comes with the practicalities, even more so if you dont live in or near a major city where such things are readily available to try, hire and buy. And in a gigging situation who will notice the difference. My old EBS gear sounded better at home than my Genz Benz, but when I am playing with the rest of the band the difference is inaudiable.
13.
Easy answer. F** the valve amp idea & get something like a Markbass or GenzBenz amp & then get a valve compressor pedal. Light, more reliable & more durable. Although I would have a shot of some valve stuff as it does have a nice warm tone & try & compare. Horses for courses stuff OK, not such an easy answer, :brow:
Dont use bad language, you will get a warning
14. I wont tell you what to buy but bassday is a great place to start! There will be lots of stuff there and also deals to be done, so work out your budget, get the cash and take it with you. Try everything you can and make an offer on what you like the best. Nice wheels
15. Go for it! Keep an eye on your local music shops that often have a board up with all sorts of contacts, consider sticking your own up. Look in your local fee ad's papers and stuff like that. Try and find out if there are any jam/open mike's going locally and have a look at those too. Find out if there are any basschatter's locally and go to their gigs as well. Leave no stone unturned and something will turn up (excuse the pun but I am a DICK (Drunk In Charge of Keyboard)
16.
What if the 'sh*t' sound I get from my Boss turns out to be what I'm after? Thouoght about that? I'm sorry but I don't like being told my equipment is sh*t. I initially thought you were young due to the lack of subtlety in your post but you are clearly old enough to know better.
Didn't say it was sh1t I said it was sh1t compared to individual pedals, and the overdrive on your £200 multi-effects is not going to sound as good as a £200 dedicated valve overdrive, no matter how clever the modelling. If it was Ampeg would be out of business. Though I was stating the obvious really. Up to you cos I frankly could not give a toss what you do.
17. Your boss is going to sound sh*t compared to proper individual effects just because of economics - a multi effect for the price of one good pedal is not gonna sound as good. My advice would be to try a proper valve preamp like a DHA or EBS Valvetone and I am sure the valve nerds can suggest others (including multi effects with valves - Digitech used to do one IIRC). They are a lot easier to post on than an SVT if you decide you dont like it. They do work better with some amps and I dont know where the GK sits on this spectrum.
18. Went to see Bernie the other night with my Genz Benz rig, and althought the EBS was a better sound, they cant compete with the weight and size of the class D stuff like Markbass and Genz Benz. Consequently Bernie has some ex-demo EBS Classic Line going for very good prices. This is to rock what the regular EBS is to slap and hi fi sound. Weight wise its between the Proline and the Neoline cabs and I have to say it sounds very good. Worth a call if you are long haired and low bassed, without pandering to stereotypes at all.
19. Well I already have the EBS, which makes it a no brainer for me. But all this "its the best preamp ever. but I can't power it" is giving me a good laugh
20. Toys well and truely out of the pram You know when you have be kiwi'd Even if I was suddenly to decide that Bernie was a c***, which is as likely as pissing in the Queens handbag; there is no way I would sell my GB's.
21. Stop talking about it and do it. I for one am not going to tell you what to buy - if I did it won't be what you want cos my sound is not your sound. But consider this, after you have wasted £440 on a 410HE, how much will the Berg actually cost you?
22. Dont take this the wrong way - cos I am not taking the piss. Some people are happy spending all their bass career playing on their own, extreme bending, slapping like a c*** stuck in the '80's, two handed tapping, double thumbing, whatever. There will come a point, if you are a musician, when you want to stop w***ing and play with other musicians in front of an audience. If you dont have the time, commitment, whatever in a non judgemental way, to get a gig with a band, then look for venues that do open nights. There will be one within driving, bus, train whatever. Go along and watch (they tend to be a bit jazzy), suss out the craik, go home and learn what you need to learn until you are happy to turn up with your bass and fill your boots. Thats it.
23. Stop f***ing about and buy an EBS that works on 9V
