You're certainly an angry old man aren't you?
Not sure what age has got to do with it, but there are only so many times I will tell someone to ignore the light until it becomes ignore the f***ing light! The boy is hopefully a newbie; but he does not seem to want to know how it all works; so maybe he should take up an acoustic instrument. I'm out.

I didn't think anyone would have to ask what I think about mixing cabs
I think a new attitude is more called for.... But seriously John,IF you wandered into any shop regardless of product, and got that 'feeling' you'd probably search anywhere else for what you needed, rather than lay the Queens face on the counter! I got it once in Barnstaple,as a result,I ALWAYS went to Exeter to buy anything (Mansons),at least I felt I was being treated as a valued customer, even if it was a book,cable,pedal...anything.
Too right. I always get love from the places I shop
yes but my point is, its all well and good having something to tell you you're clipping, but are you damaging the amp? is it a "warning" light?
Yes it is a warnig light. I told you to read the basschat wiki. Had you done so you would have seen this:You can use any power ouput amp with any power handling cab. If any of these combinations makes bad sounds then turn down and/or stop cranking the bass EQ excessively or damage may occurThis applies to your stupid f***ing light as well. Ignore the light and use Alex Clabbers first law. You said in one of your previous posts that you like slapping. Slapping sounds best with slap switches and compression on - to smooth out the differences in volume between slapping and popping (just cos I cant slap, wont slap, does not mean I have never slapped ) If you are altenating between slapping and not slapping then you need a two channel amp, or some sort of preamp, or some other easily useable way of switching between a slap and non slap sound. Stop slapping, it so 80's

For What Its Worth What he really needs to do though Ross is start selling 9 strings
-
The thing is; the seller has started about 10 different threads trying to sell or trade this rig. You can draw your own conclusions as to why. I bumped all these threads for him a week ot two back, and one of those threads actually said what he wanted for trade. He, as in the seller, thought I was taking the piss Me As if And reported me to the mods The thing is that EBS is really good gear, and in the time the seller has been attempting to sell this, I sold my EBS rig, with a little more effort, bought another one cos my Genz Benz was on a slow boat from China, and sold that one as well You work it out :brow:

Advice on what cab to get for the sound I'm after
bass_ferret replied to colinmk's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks for that - other chatters have been less receptive I am but a learner compared to some of the more knowledgable chatters. I have never used ampeg gear but I have heard the SVH410HLF sound great in the context of a loud rock band on the local pub circuit. -
First rule of retail, if a customer knows more than you do (like selling a bass as something it is clearly not, or even knowing that Aria have slipped down the food chain), dont f*** them off

I have already told you the compressor is before the clip indicator, so having the compressor on will make the clip light come on less. The clip light comes on when the voltage in the circuit exceeds the threshold. There is a circuit diagram in the manual that clearly shows all this. All that happens when the clip light comes on is the clip light comes on. Do you even know what clipping is? See your other thread. This can be shown on a meter put across the circuit. Like the old vu meters we used to have to use on tape decks. If you think of digital vu meters with LED's rather than Ashdown needles, then the clip light is the first red LED.

Advice on what cab to get for the sound I'm after
bass_ferret replied to colinmk's topic in Amps and Cabs
OK mate. But you seem to be suffering a misconception about cabs. Two things affect the volume of a cab, the sensitivity (how many db with 1 watt at 1 metre) and how many watts that you are putting into the cab. The actual rating has no affect whatsoever. -
Well it says on their site £1100! Waaay to pricey for me.
And I said give mark a call. I paid a lot less than RRP for my gear. If you dont ask you dont get.
I am seeing an old SVT 410he on ebay. Can anyone clear this up, are they 200watts or 500watts the old ones? 200watts will be pretty quiet I am imagining?
Power handling makes no difference to a cabs volume. -
Gassing for a stealth Bongo like this. Dont really know why as am not short of basses.
Thanks for the input. I really need to get off my backside and try a few different cabs is probably a short answer. I do like the idea of adding another ashdown 2x10 to my existing 4x10 and having the flexibility of 2 rigs. So the next question is. Will 6x10 ashdown cut the mustard in comparison with more pricey 4x10's. For example would the epifani/ zoot/ Dr Bass et al 4x10 really blow away 6x10 ashdown? I am a believer in you get what you pay for most of the time. Is this true with higher end 4x10, or would the difference with an ashdown 6x10 negligible??? cheers.
Only you can decide whether you prefer the sould of an Ashdown 6x10 to say the EBS Proline 410 I mentioned before.

Just had a look at the spec for the cab. It gives the frequency resonse for the drivers not the cab. Whats that all about?
-
Try it for yourself. Nick your guitarists capo, tune down a tone and stick in on the second fret. I recon the difference will be so small you wont practically notice any.

Just looked at the Warwick site and its sh*t with a capital S. The close up picture of the amp does not even show the controls, no manuals or specs, no specs on the cabs even other than dimensions and f***ing heavy! Compare it to the EBS website. I know the Warwick is a budget amp and the EBS the opposite, but thats no excuse for the sh*t website and lack of downloadable manuals. Except I was looking at the US site not the european site. What does that say about the US. Start again. The manual for your amp can be downloaded from here. Its not the best manual I have ever seen I have to admit but it does give some clues. Unfortunately it does not tell you what the adjustable compressor adjusts so my suggestion that you read the wiki article in your other thead was not helpful. The things it is most likely to affect is the threshold or the ratio. You will have to read on what these controls do and f*** about with it to try and work it out. The compressor comes before the clip light. Like you have already been told you should set the clip light so it flashes on just when you play the loudest notes. Nearly all amps are the same in this respect. You will now have to compromise what is your ideal sound for something you can hear. DO NOT USE THE CONTOUR! Turn it off. This would be the same advice for most amps. I dont know why they fit them to be honest, slappers like them but you dont buy a Warwick for slapping. Leave the bass control flat and try an use the low mid (sparingly) to bring up the low end. Do not use the deep switch. Turn the hi mid to about 3 o'clock. Add treble and bright to taste. Can you hear it now?
Just been listening / watching some Prince & found this live version of Purple Rain & couldn't work out what bass his player had? .........snip
Thats not just a bass player in the prince vid - thats Larry f***ing Graham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And one more thing - if the light bothers you that much - turn the f***ing thing down!

How can you clip an amp unplugged? You are worrying about nothing. Read the wiki stuff again and try to understand it. Read the bit about compression might help as well. I dont know your amp but some amps have a clip light on the input. That means turn down if you want a clean sound, or ignore it if you want some dirt and you have a valve pre-amp. Depends on the amp. Amps with built in compression often have a light when the compressor is working, i.e. the signal is over the threshold. Many amps have a limiter on the output stage. A limiter is a compressor with a very high ratio and the threshold is set near the max output of the amp - or so the marketing bs will say. Again the limit light comes on when the signal is over the threshold. So the light means the limiter is working. Its not really a good idea to have the limiter light on permenantly but it wont hurt.

Nightingale Bass - early GB rarity
bass_ferret replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Cant argue with the sellers description but it might be worth a google to check what he says. Does have some features still used on GB basses so may be credible. Bernie had some snakewood a while back but it was all spoken for or it would have been on my fretless. -
Speakers and power - explain this bit....
bass_ferret replied to john_the_bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
As I have shamelessly robbed from Alex many times: You can use any power ouput amp with any power handling cab. If any of these combinations makes bad sounds then turn down and/or stop cranking the bass EQ excessively or damage may occur It does not need any more thought than that. The 21inch woofer is not a myth. It was an architectural hifi driver made for the US market by Electrovoice.
