1. proceed with extreme caution - it would be silly to f*** up an ampeg doing this. You wont hear anything from the 8 ohm speaker anyway unless it is more efficient than the 4 ohm one.
2.
Saying that, most , if not all the bands i see live on Tv seem to still have big rigs. I must admit it looks good but i guess they dont always have to transport it themselves.
Never heard of roadies?
3. Moulded PA cabs have been around for years.
4. I only need 4 strings and cant be arsed to work out the gauges but bass strings are usually measured by the G string (same as thin strings are measured by the top E) so think about it this way - tune your A string down to E - thats the effect of going from 50's (very heavy 50 70 90 110) to 30's (very light 30 50 70 90).
5.
I will downsize as soon as I can find an amp that delivers like my Metro and doesn't cost 4x the price.
Have you seen the EBS NeoGorm?
6. And bass players had to be strong as an ox to carry the gear - hey might be a good nickname for a bass player I used to think nothing of humping heavy gear around but now I am older I prefer not to start the gig with back ache. Bass players also dont seem to be the big hairy brutes they used to be - why some are even girls.
7. You can get replacement 4 ohm speakers from Peavey.
8. Somebody was selling a 1000 watt job for f*** all but its sold now - shame you did not ask yesterday. It weighed a ton mind. Sure chop is running 3 or even 4 DB112's from a DB750 or something equally massive. Worth a look.
9. How does it compare to the GB?
10. Am pretty sure Epifani started saying theirs were 4 ohms cos saying 5.3 was confusing people. Its not gonna break anything in the impedence is more than it stated unless you are using a valve amp. All impedence ratings are nominal anyway as impedence changes with frequency.
11. Probably just like any other £100 chinese bass.
12. This board does get surreal at time. Op asks why no 3x10's. 3 Replies about yes 3x10's and then somebody chips in why there are no 3x10's
13. Captain Jap Crap strikes again
14.
Cheers John I've heard they're expensive but great and I don't know a thing about them.. Will have a look now though.. Thanks! Nik
You could borrow mine if you want to try it.
15. Hey Nik - get an EBS Microbass II Sorry as well
16.
That's interesting. Not wanting to show my ignorance to plainly, but why a 5 if you play with keys or horns?
The bit about keys is bollocks - the reason keys took over bass duties in the late 80's early 90's was cos bass players all wanted to slap everything and would not "just play the bass". Bands with horns may chose to play in horn friendly keys and the more horns the more likely. Horn friendly keys are Bb and Eb because thats the keys horns are tuned to. Obviously being able to go down to Eb helps but does not really explain how all the jazz greats managed with just 4 strings.
17. Amazing what you can find on google
18. Dont forget the legenary Wal triple neck - cant remember what it had but it was made for Ric Wakemans bass player.
19. f*** the band - do they tell you what to play?
20. The Two channel is just on the preamp gain - you have solid state and valve pre-amps and can switch between them (if you have the footswitch its even better). The tube is good cos you have pre and post gain so you can drive the tube just how you want it - just like the shuttle!
21.
I'll tell you what I can't stand - ampegs with 8x10's. I sure hate being told I should get one.
tell them you will play it but they can carry it! That should see them off
22.
thanks again everyone. Is it generally better to use same make cabs as extension cabs?
See here. I personally use two of the same cabs. If you are DI through the PA as well it does not really matter, but I suspect the unpredictable results could be more apparent FOH than on stage where the likelihood is that you would generally hear just the top cab nearest your ears. TBH everybody using PA for FOH and multiple cabs of stage monitoring could probably save a load of cash by sticking the top cab on an empty box!
23. You never see Ampeg and light weight in the same sentence unless there is a not in there as well. Funny thing is they were one one of the first to do silly light weight stuff but they made a marketing mistake by calling it Portabass (well it put me off anyway) and the one I tried was crap and farted like a very farty thing after a curry.
24. I would agree with that. I bought a dolly with wheels for my cabs and have not played a single venue yet where I could use it.
25.
However, as someone who's heading down the 600w head, 2x10 & 2x12 route who am I to talk
Getting 2x2x10's or 2x2x12's might give you a better sound. See the painful thread about stacking cabs.
