Wow that started something off! But now I'm thinking b******s I wish I'd asked the question before ordering the 2x10 to go with my 1x15. At present I have a GK 1x15 neo cab, so what would have been my best bet as the additional cab? What I did go for was the GK 2x10 Goldline cab.
At the risk of propogating an urban myth I would have said get another 1x15 neo cab. Dont forget that the 2x15 cab was as much a standard bass cab as an 8x10 - and Jaco used 2x15 cabs. When I started playing bass very few players went for all this multi cab lark that seems so popular now. However, all may not be lost - try it and like my fans said - trust your ears. If it sounds OK it is OK but make sure you listen from more than just standing in front of it like you do at a gig - try and get into the room and hear what it sounds like there.
Good man. You have illustrated my point exactly! Ferret wasn't giving any advice just propagating an "urban myth"!
So I was propogating an urban myth passing on the advice of audio engineers. Nice one. And I suppose I imagined the sh*t sound coming from my mismatched cabs as well. I am surprised Alex Claber has not chipped in as well but then again maybe he cant be arsed after having been called patronising here.
Misalignment - say through dropping... and spilt beer on the speakers also are another couple of ways of destroying drivers
Silly me

I think you will find this has come up over and over again and those that actually know about this stuff have said over and over again that using different cabs for the same signal can produce unpredictable results. To get the very best sound possible matching cabs should be used. If you cant hear the difference good for you, if the punters cant hear the difference ditto. Its not like your knobs will fall off or other more serious consequences. From my own experience I had a Peavey 1x15BW and a TX210 and it sounded sh*t - sounded better with just either cab on their own. So I sold the 1x15 and got another TX210 and it sounded as good as a Peavey stack could sound.

like a lot of us I expect Alex is getting fed up with explaining the same things over and over again - often to the same people. Two things destroy drivers: 1. Over-heating the voice coil so it melts (actually if will expand and sieze up before it gets that far) 2. Making the cone move in and out further than it is designed to - this will tear the suspension round the edge of the cone or make the voice coil come completely out of the magnet assembly (or both if you try really hard) Overheating the voice coil is the thermal limit and popping the cone is the excursion limit.

And even in the same cab that could be run bi-amp and full range. I think a lot depends on whether the cabs have been designed to work together and on some makes this appears to be the case as lots of happy users will testify. I never heard any problems with my EBS Neo 110 and 112 stack that was used in lots of adverts and featured in all the reviews so I guess they were designed to work together and complement each other. But the thing is with a lot of gear you just dont know and mixing cabs from different brands was defo not designed to work together.
-
Bill may be assuming that you are using a crossover for these cabs but I suspect you are intending to put the full signal through both. As has been said many times putting the same signal through different cabs can produce unpredictable results and is likely to sound bad which ever way you stack them.

Help me choose a cab! Schroeder, Dr. Bass, Genz & 2x12 musings...

It seems reasonable to assume Babbit has a roadie so does not have to hump the daleks around. -
In all fairness the only way to decide between the Hellborg and the Dr Bass is to try them. And thats gonna be impossible unless you take a Dr Bass cab to someboby who stocks the Hellborg.
Does anyone know how wattage output increases with turning up the volume, is it an exponential type increase?
The numbers, markings etc on the volume control are totally meaningless - see here

You need an HD350 for that rig
-
My guess is that on record and live there is no DI involved - everything is mic'd. Marshall Superbass 100 into a 4x15 and a 4x12 just like his signature rig in the current BGM. Tricked up Ric with a high action thrashed to within an inch of its life every time it is played would be my guess.
Could someone in the know answer me this? The Schroeder 21012L's SPL & response is 104db / 35Hz-18kHz, and the Dr Bass's SPL & response is 101db / 42Hz-20kHz.
You would definitely notice 3db - its the equivalent of having another cab. But specifications can be misleading. Schroeder are known for having a mid hump so this might be the frequency used to measure sensitivity. And the frequency response is meaningless on its own. What neither of them publish is actual frequency response and sensitivity graphs. -

See the basschat wiki for info on 1x12 cabs. -
Note that it's 48" to 58" long so all right for bass_ferret and his knee-level basses but 12" too long for my hip-height preference.
just how long a strap would I need for knee level
And now I SO have GAS for a TecAmp M212. GAAAAHHHH (again)
Looks like a cool cab - taller and narrower than most so easy to get through doors. I am loving my Genz Benz NeoX112T's They are a bit larger than most 1x12 cabs so have a bit fuller sound. For non neo's look at the Berg's in addition to the Agi's. You could also get the Dr Bass and Zoot cabs with regular drivers. -
You can edit the original post and add a poll to it Hamster
I can only do 6/7 September. Any venue is fine but prefer not to go to Reading, its only just in the South East -
Just seen the sale thread on the TBC - looks a lot more expensive than it was. Surprised it took so long to sell - I guess he was not trying hard enough.
Funny, I bought the 2x10s as a pair and sold one...maybe your 115 was a different model?
It was just a 1x15 black widow cab but Peavey have tinkered with the cabs every couple of years so who knows. I ended up with 2 2x10's and used them for a good few years. When I got an EBS rig though the change was huge - totally different sound.

Black - but I am biased
I cant think of anything that will sound as bad as that Peavey combination - sorry.

I think that's being a little harsh, mine sounds OK. If you had nothing useful to contribute to the thread, why bother replying?
I am well aware of what that rig sounds like cos I had the same except the 2x10 was an older model. It sounded so bad I got rid of the 1x15 and got another 2x10 but as I said you taste may be different from mine.

I cant think of anything that will sound as bad as that Peavey combination - sorry. I am not going to tell you what to buy as you may not like what I like, but I am hoping to be running a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 into a pair of Genz Benz NeoX112T's very soon!

Correct.
So with a valve amp and impedance matched transformers, you'll get the same power if you connect a 16 ohm load to the 16 ohm output as if you connected a 4 ohm load to the 4 ohm output?
Yes.
