Much more interesting than "read the wiki"!

3.
not exactly well argued points, but whilst I don't agree with you on the double slap thing being "rubbish" (as it is incredibly skilful - can you do it?), i subscribe to Oscar South's views that he is an amazing musician and his arrangements are incredible. Slapping aside, if you haven’t watched or heard him playing Norwegian Wood then check it out. Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9a4ThBNacY - that was at Bass Day '98
Wonderful playing - I actually watched it all and that is unusual for that sort of gig. I dont think it would have gone down very well had I played it at the Empire Club last night though. Nor any other Ferrets gig I have ever done. Lots of this stuff on poo tube comes from gigs like that. Had it been at Wembly it might have more credibility for non bass geeks. I think what it comes down to is there are two kinds of people on basschat (excluding Mrs T who is in a class of her own). Bass geeks and bass players and I doubt if the two will ever agree on stuff like this.
4.
That’s part of the problem for me – saying that you don’t like Motown is like declaring that your hobby is torturing small puppy dogs!! I can’t say that I hate Motown as such, but if I never hear some rubbish DJ playing a Motown set again at a wedding / birthday party / work function it would not worry me at all….
Its not the motown thats the problem - its rubbish DJ's. Specially when they play readmixes and pick their noses for 10 minutes, or lack the imagination (just my) to play anything other than the obvious.
Find it difficult to understand all the hate for Jaco here – surely one of the greats on any instrument, not just bass
Its not hate, but the question was about over rated players and a lot of bass player geeks think he sits at gods right hand. No one is denying his chops and ability as a bass player - we just dont like what he plays. He has also influenced a generation of players that most people have never heard of and wont like. OTOH, loads of bass players in bands that people do know and like say they are influenced by Jamerson - even now. That includes Macca, who was a Beatle FFS - that trumps any bass player, and Glen Matlock (who thought it was Carol Kaye) - the bass players in two bands that had a massive impact far beyond the wildest dreams of all of us.

hi

There is a long and distinguished thread dedicated to Bass Collection. Im sure it was pinned. Might have your answer.
6. good way to learn
7.
I'm sure this was done a while back. Anyway - I vote for Jaco. Great chops and technically brilliant but nobody else has ever heard of him. I've had conversations like: Jaco who? What did he play? Well he was on Heavy Weather. What? And a couple of Joni Mitchell albums. OK! (accompanied by blank look). As opposed to: Jamerson who? What did he play? Loads of Motown hits from the 60's and 70's, like Reach Out, Bernadette, I Was Made To Love Her, Whats Going On. Really - how come I've never heard of him etc etc.

Let's be controversial! To anyone who isn’t a massive soul fan, Jamerson was just a decent session player who played on a string of hits! Jaco redefined the boundaries of what the instrument could do…
Controverial? Me? Yes Jaco did redefine what the instrument could do. So did Jamerson and The Ox. Going back even further, so did Jimmy Blanton - although it was a different instrument. At least Joe Public will have heard The Ox and Jamerson - even if they dont dig it. I dont think I have ever met anyone who did not like Motown though.
8. The two most frequently asked questions on basschat. What stand? Hercules. What cable? OBBM.

10. No Probs HH - I dont think anyone has used these strings so tis difficult to compare them. Have you tried Status? Proper Trace Elliot(as in Essex)/Ashdown and Status always had some sort of relationship going.
11. Dont take this the wrong way - but I can be blunt. You paid for a cheap bass - you got a cheap bass. If you spend loads of money on pups and active you have still got a cheap bass. Sell it and buy something better - then you will have a better bass that will be worth spending money on to make even more better.
12. GB Guitars are the distributer for EBS amps and the builders of GB basses - see here. I went to buy some cabs and ended up with these:
13. There's the rub. We all moan about having to try stuff with some spotty kid playing Smoke on the Water on thin strings, it gives you a much better idea of real world sound than playing on your own in some tiny booth.
14. Use an RCD - never plug in without one.
15. Just dont try one of his basses
16. Was gonna try it when we had our cabs shoot-out but spent too long playing with the F1.
17. Its gonna be interesting to see how it compares with the Genz Benz Shuttle when they land.
18. The Gallery are EBS dealers in London but it would probably be easier to go to Brighton than The Gallery from SE London!
19. Getting back on topic, try what they got and buy the one you like best. If you cant get to try and are buying blind online then I for one am not prepared to tell you what to buy - you might not like it.
20. I feel posetively lardy compared to some of you guys and now use a DJ CD Case (big one) and a sports bag. The CD case has the main gear and the bag the spares. I notice some of you dont appear to use an RCD - dont plug in without one boys and girls. I have an extension reel that often needs to be used - maybe I should have got one of OBBM's 5M kettle leads. I do BV's as well so I need a Mic, stand, cable and monitor that adds to the clobber.
21.
But what makes you think having two cabs tuned to the same frequency is best? As I've said, my current rig sounds best (in my opinion) when the 2x10 is left tuned to 45Hz and the 1x15 is tuned down to 35Hz. Yes the maximum 'loudness' of the 1x15 is decreased, but I never need to run it at max (infinite baffle is unfortunately a step too far, and the cab then doesn't put out enough bass for rehearsal). While my decision to use this configuration is down to listening to all possible setups (well, all setups involving no more than two sponges coz that's all I happen to have), my explanation for this is precisely because the tunings do not both try to reinforce the same frequency range, meaning the bass is more even on the way down. The Funk has noted that the tunings apply equally to each cabinet. It's simply my experience that tuning the 2x10 down isn't as effective, and if I want to boost the low E on my bass, I'd rather boost it on a fifteen than tens. One final note (I think pushing the topic much further is probably akin to flogging a dead donkey): The 1x15 and a 2x10 or a 4x10 is classic combination, used by countless bassists. Even if it's not to everyone's liking, surely there's good reason for that.
Yes the 1x15/2x10 or 4x10 is a very popular combination but that does not necessarily make it right nor does it mean that 2x2x10 or 2x4x10 wont sound better/different/worse depending on your preference. Most commercially available bass cabs are too small for the drivers fitted according to many acoustic engineers. Like I said when I described my experience of running a 1x15/2x10 rig where I heard a hole in the bass is consistent with the out of phase bit from your description of the ports in the Trace cabs. So you wont get smooth response from 35 to 45 Hz, you will get a hole at 40Hz because of phase cancellation from the 45Hz port. As it says in the description this might not be audible (but then nor would the peak at 35Hz) or you may even like it but it does sound feasible as the cause of the duff sound I had when I had the Peavey cabs. But at the end of the day if you are happy with the sound then all this theory is bollocks. I'm just curious really as to what the difference would be but you wont know if you dont try it. Maybe we could try it if we have another London and South East bash.
22. Well I am waiting for a smart arsed admin to put it back. And maybe add some value. Could be a long wait.
23. Rosetti you say - not known for allowing their retailers to cut deals but maybe times have changed. Some very interesting looking gear there.
24. Very interesting but tuning down to 35Hz is gonna waste lots of ampage. There are lots of recommendations to use a high pass filter at 40Hz unless you are using deep tuning. There is a article on the basschat wiki about boundary reinforcement. I still cant help thinking that 2 2x10's tuned to 45Hz is gonna sound better than a 2x10/1x15 tuned to 35Hz. But then again I've never spent a lot of time f***ing about with TE (never liked the sound) so I will bow to the superior wisdom of those that have. On most cabs you don't have an option of tuning the ports and I would guess that most makers will have all their cabs tuned to the same frequency (except the Peavey cabs I had) so they work well together. My Peavey cabs were separated by a few years so it is entirely possible the tuning frequency of all their cabs was changed in the intervening years. Also adds to the uncertainty of mixing cabs from different makers as well.
25. Dont be fooled - BC Rich have always been quality basses. Just cos its a funny shape does not mean it has to be a plank.
