Give them a call or email. They will usually price match I believe but i've never been there myself.
anyone got any other ideas other than ashdown?
You live in London according to your sig. I know London is a big place but the Gallery that I have already given you a link for is one of the best shops in the UK. Go there! If you can travel get out to the Bass Merchant that I have given you the link for in Essex. Depending on where in London you live that may easier. Go there. The answers to your questions are there - not on here. The most consistant advice you have had is GK so try that first. If you keep ignoring the advice you are getting the advisers will start ignoring you.

Phil Jones has had somewhat mixed fortunes on this forum so proceed with care if you go that way.

How many more times? READ THIS AND THIS If you dont understand ask, jusk dont keep ignoring it.

It does not matter how many times you ask the questions you are gonna get the same answers from the same people. Everyone on here has their favourite squeeze and thats the answer you will get from a lot of people, no matter what question you ask. Thats how it is. I have pointed you at the wiki but you dont seem to want to learn what affects volume. The only indicator of how loud a cabinet will go is the measured sensitivity and frequency response graph but the latter are never published and the sensitivity can be imaginative. I cant find the figures for the Warwick as they dont appear to publish them but I have just looked at the GK website and the Neo 212 is 101dB and the 410RBH is 102dB. IdB is probably inaudible. You would usually gain 3dB by adding another cab.
I'm not saying you can't choose different tones from different playing styles. I play with my fingers, a thumb pick, my thumb and my nails - but I still gig with 20 odd pedals.
Someone that thinks actives f***s up the purity of the sound is unlikely to use 20 pedals I used to muck around with my eq but now I just have a few sounds that I like to use. The thing is you dont have to keep mucking around with the eq but with an active bass it is there if you want it.
So powered basses, is this the way ahead, get rid of the battery and get some stable and more powerful watts in there? Peter
EBS amps will power a 9V active through phantom power and stereo jack. Not much use for 18V but it is a neat trick.
-
I have been using active basses since I started playing apart from the first 3 months - so thats 28 years. My first 2 basses were an Ibanez Roadster and Musician - both 79/80 vintage. Both had a passive switch for when the battery went flat and I could not hear any difference between the active and passive sound. The Roadster had really hot output even in passive. My subsequent basses (Bass Collection, GB and KSD) dont have a passive switch so I cant tell but they have all had good quality circuits. The shortest signal path is pup->jack->amp with no tone controls (or just passive bass and treble like in the good old days) and the purist would say that adding processing on the bass/outboard eq/active tone controls/graphic/parametric etc has an opportunity to colour the sound (or ruin it depending on your pov).
You could buy every single last item of equipment that Flea uses, right down to the cables (you have considered that they will affect your tone haven't you ) he uses and you still may not sound anything like him. Have you considered the bass that Flea uses? Exactly he still retains 'his' tone regardless of whether he is using MM / Fender / Modulus etc because 'he' is producing most of that tone (or if we are talking recordings, the engineers and producers are), his amp is simply amplifying it.

The funk is in the fingers
Yes the HD broadcast was in 5.1 and no I could not see Alison Goldrapp's nickers. While the HD picture was very good, could see every gobule of Yeasayers drummers spit when he was singing, the sound was completely different and much better on HD. You could hear the Yeasayer bass guys lovely G&L fretless much better and all the performances I've watched so far sounded much better and had a much better sense of timing and swing - Goldfrapp came to life and I guess that probably takes us back to my original comments regarding Estelle, and the lack of groove (or swing if you like) cos of the guys overplaying that I thought I could hear. The Kooks were not up to much and whats with the pretty boy bass player - should not be allowed

Jaco’s 1962 Fender Jazz Bass “Bass of Doom” Found!
bass_ferret replied to Funkmaster's topic in General Discussion
Well if all you sensitive types think it is so important that wacko's bass has been found why dont you get the OP pinned, or is that beyond the wit of admin? I was expecting some Jaco lover to update this. Oh well. -
For a better explanation of bi-amping see the wiki but all GK amps have a separate tweeter amp that will drive the tweeters in GK cabs when wired up with 2 way speakons. This is a feature unique to GK afaik. Speakers fail for 2 reasons: Thermal failure because too much power is put through the coils (think of the coils as a fuse rated at the drivers power). This has to be continuous so you need to put serious power in to do that. Mechanical failure because you are driving the excursion (movement in and out) beyond its maximum. You can hear this as distortion long before it becomes terminal but most of us ignore it until the cone splats itself on the grill. This can happen with amps rated below the speakers thermal rating.
ok great, looks like that head is the one to buy, mostly beacuse flea uses it! lol. now i kinda need to figure out which cabs to get for it. i'll think i'll start a new thread about this, this ones dragging on a bit
Dont just take our word for it - make sure its right for you.
I know there are opposing opinions on which is best but I just want to know what the advantages are of an active bass.
The main advantage is an increase in signal strength (not necessarily volume) that increases the signal/noise ratio, and drives longer leads and multiple effects with less signal loss. There are lots of variation of active circuits but having 2 band/3 band/parametric/filter tone controls gives you much more control over tone from the bass as opposed to the simple treble roll off on most passive basses. But some say the active circuit colours the sound.
Does operating the active switch whilst playing increase volume?
Depends on the pre-amp. Lots dont have a switch - none of mine do. The switch on most is a failsafe for a flat battery rather than switching between passive and active when you are playing.
When should it be used?
Whenever you want. Mine are on all the time cos I cant turn them off.

Well done. At least you should know what you are getting into this time, like whats in it for Warwick.

I guess it wasn't about GB's or EBS...... can't have enough chat about that Sh!te can we ? Jaco's bass deserves a 100 Threads
No. If I was going to be rude I would have said "look before you post; f***wit". But as I have not posted anything about EBS since I sold it I guess I'm gonna have to say to you "look before you post!". Perhaps we should have a new forum for endless posts about Jaco's bass. -
