I really dont know why people keep suggesting Harke XL cabs when they are so marmite. Oh well. Ashdown is the same, loved and loathed in equal measure. GK normally gets the thumbs up and so do Mark Bass amps although some have been less impressed with the cabs. There are 3 combo's that are head and shoulders above everything else. The Eden Metro already mentioned, the SWR Super Redhead and the EBS Gorm. They are all heavy and expensive, but can be picked up S/H for around your budget. The Gorm has jsut been replaced by the NeoGorm that is lighter but just as expensive. Despite the fact that almost everyone does it there are some speaker guru's who say you should not mix cabs with different drivers covering the same frequencies so the best extension cab for a 2x10 combo is a 2x10 cab. I did this myself and replace a 1x15 I was using with a 2x10 with another 2x10 cos it sounded better.

Replacing drivers and ohmage issues...
bass_ferret replied to Boy Thunder's topic in Repairs and Technical
Your cab has 2x16 ohm drivers wired in parallel so thats 8 ohms. You want to replace the 16 ohm drivers with 4 ohm drivers so if you wire them in parallel you get a 2 ohm cab and if your amp cant safely drive a 2 ohm cab you are f***ed. If you wire the 4 ohm drivers in series as shown in the wiki article then you will be back to having an 8 ohm cab. The power rating is largely irrelevant. -
When did someone put a big notice on BC saying 'Sell Here'?
bass_ferret replied to warwickhunt's topic in Site News
We had a poll on the subject of a minimum post before selling and the result was no. If you dont like people that just come on here to sell, like the Italian chap selling a modulus for retail + 25%, then add them to your ignore user list. -
I can't really take responsibility for recommending that a 15 year old bassist gets his parents to fork out just under £1000 for an Epifani UL410.
According to his profile he is 18. Am I missing something?

Replacing drivers and ohmage issues...

Gaining an understanding is much better that just getting answers. When I said wiki I meant the basschat wiki -
Yes. Middle and Pinkie get used the most.

Read the wiki for a full explanation of impedence/watts. -
so i dont get how you can really judge a head other than its stats
Here is the root of your problem! You want to buy the Hartke cos its the most bang per buck (40p per watt). You dont buy gear because its got the best stats, you buy gear cos it sounds good. This is why the old Hartke gear is marmite, some people love how it sounds and some people hate how it sounds cos its sound is very distinctive cos of the metal cones. It is difficult to know how stuff sounds cos even if you try before you buy you wont be playing anywhere near full beans and it will sound different, it will also sound different when you gig with your band, but it will give you a clue as to how it sounds. You wont find anyone endorsing the new Hartke range until we have heard it, so if you want it you will have to go alone. My point about budget is this: You were going to spend £400 on an amp and a grand on cabs. What I as suggesting you do is spend £700 on a better sounding amp and £700 on a better sounding cab.
-
We wont tell you what to buy - thats up to you. We may suggest alternatives that you appear to be determined to ignore so get what you like. Losing one cab should make your budget stretch beyond budget; i.e get better gear.
-
Dont be so obsessed with getting full beans from the amp. You wont be able to tell the difference between 500W and 700W. All solid state amps have a minimum impedence (although it is not always stated as such)and if you have a higher impedence load you will get less watts. If you have a lower impedence you can destroy your amp. You can rewire the cabs differently (see the wiki) but not usually from 8 to 4 ohms.

Your budget for an LH1000/HX410/HX410 was approx £1400. Now you have decided to drop 1 of the cabs I would call Mark at Bass Direct and talk about a Bargantino HS410 and GenzBenz GBE750. Add a bit more to you budget and you could stretch to the Berg NV610 and split the difference between having 1 or 2 4x10 cabs.

I can see them all now while I am typing this and below but not when I viewed the thred.

I thought molded cases is what you get if you leave them in the garage for too long

Phone numbers keep disappearing when I view posts and PM's. Probably a setting somewhere but its a bit frustrating when you are trying to do a deal and cant see the phone number.

Music performance volume and EU regulations
As others have said these were very common 20 years ago, I even tripped one tuning up (before we had tuners).
Thanks for all your replies - it is nice to know I am not alone!! Currently I am using Warwick Red label strings, I'll try changing to a similar but different make, plus a weight on the head stock. If that works I'll try the Fat Finger. Thanks again, Loafer
Dont just assume it is the bass. Can you hear it un-amplified? There are venues that I play that suffer from this because of resonance with the hollow stage, f*** all to do with my basses. Have you tried the easiest option, playing in a different room if you cant hear the wolf notes un-amplified.
-
Seems to me you have already decided what to buy, so not sure why you are asking when everyone is telling you that you dont need a stack. That you are playing large outdoor gigs has got f*** all to do with the size of your backline and everything to do with the size of your PA, and you will need to mic the drums up to cope with the volume of your rig.
-
Yes. A dead spot is a note that is not as loud or does not sustain as long as other notes. Wolf notes are notes that are louder or sustain longer than other notes.
I didn't think anything was made in the UK anymore, apart from sandwiches.
And one parent families.
-
You could do a lot worse than look at the amps and cabs for sale. You have not said what your budget is but I'm guessing you could pick up a good rig S/H that will kick that Hartke arse.
-
Wolf notes are just as common as dead spots. Does the bass do it unamplified - if it does it is the bass. If it does not it could be the result of coupling with the walls/floor of the room. Try the amp in different rooms.

Speakons are better than 1/4 in jacks but to suggest jacks are NFG or fragile is ridiculous. Speakons lock so anyone tripping over a lead is either gonna pull the cable from the plug or pull your amp off the top of your cab so keep your leads short! If you have a rig with speakons and jacks then it makes sense to use speakons cos they is better, but to decide not to buy something cos it only has jacks is dumb.
-
(P.S. The Hartke LH500 amp uses 1/4 jacks instead of speakons. Is this ok? Forgive me for this stupid question, but are 1/4 jacks just the normal leads, like the lead that plugs your bass into your amp?)
Yes it is OK - someone else asked the same thing today. Its the cable that determines the use - not the plugs. Speakons make it impossible to use the wrong lead but you have to use signal lead for signal and speaker leads for speakers. For more info see the wiki.
