Where a flatwound string has been squeezed flat (as against ground flat)
Flats are wound with flat wire (like tape) not like halfs that can be squeezed (pressure wound like roto solo bass) or ground (lots of ground halfs around). See the Wiki for more info.

Not that I am at all interested in cabs that go down to A but I wish someone would write all this good cab/speaker stuff in the wiki.

Best Bass Players of the Eighties...!
bass_ferret replied to Stuart Clayton's topic in General Discussion
When I was looking at the 70's some of the stuff was actually 80's (blame the drugs) Duff as already mentioned. Mani for the second coming John Deacon for Another One Bites The Dust Oasis - love or loathe you cannot ignore Blur and Alex James likewise and on upright Jim Parris - Carmel As someone else mentioned the 80's saw 10's replace 15's as the standard. -
Kinda gave up on all this TBH. The thing is, learning theory and practicing lots will make you a better player, better able to work with others of a similar level of theory and practice. Whether you want/need/can be arsed to work on theory and practice is up to you, just dont try and justify your lack of effort, theory and practie with bs.

I've done this based on some of my favourite records of the 1970's and Number 1 has to be, and I am gobsmacked no-one else has said it, James Jamerson on Whats Going On. At Number 2 I give you John Entwistle for Who's Next or Quadrophenia - take your pick. Coming third is Andy Fraser for Fire and Water and Free Live - both feature Mr Big and that bass solo. Next is the guy that played the riff heard in every music shop on saturday afternoons before slap - Roger Waters for Dark Side and Wish You were here. Not sure about the tail end charlie but Paul Simeonon gets the nod for both the playing and the picture.

Best Bass Players of the Eighties...!
bass_ferret replied to Stuart Clayton's topic in General Discussion
Happy Mondays - cant remember the bass player Stone Roses - Mani; just crept into the 80's. Although invented in the 70's the 80's saw the rise in popularity and more availability of active basses. -
Marcus Miller should surely be considered to be an eighties man to start with. I do believe he was with Miles Davis from '81 although he had already racked up an impressive NY session CV. His work with Sanborn and Luther Vandross was mostly through the 80s
+1 - Luther Vandross was a major star of the 80's. -
Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
Was on Chess - not Motown But it was intended to sound Motown. Just get What's Going On - one of the best albums ever and still relevant today. Apart from that get Standing In The Shadows (book and DVD) as everyone says. Apart from apart from that: Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her and Do Yourself a Favour Four Tops - Bernadette and Reach Out Smokey Robinson - You Really Got a Hold On Me and Who's Loving You Temptations - My Girl and Papa Was a Rolling Stone (full version if you can find it)

Shuker "Pub/Stealth Bass" - An All Black 33" Jazz Bass
bass_ferret replied to eude's topic in Build Diaries
I reckon this is one Shuker that bass_ferret will approve of... Eude
Sure do. I like quite a lot of his basses to be honest - even Dood's; it's the only 7 string single cut I can bear to look at Si's P5 is pretty cool as well. -
Nice to see this has calmed down a bit. A few observations. Dissing the Pro's is a reaction to others sucking up to the Pro's, a typically British reaction. Like all the grizzling that Janek wont come to play here any more - which is a really great loss as he has made the sum total of 5 (five) posts and most of those are in this thread. I think that creative people will be creative irrespective of whether they have the technique and I guess many of the people that are in successful bands are not really great players - it is the music that matters. But despite this they can be influenced by people that do have the technique like Jamersons influence on loads of players that play a bt like Jamerson even though they dont have the technique (or the hook). McCartney is the obvious example. Bass is not a competitive sport with medals for who can play the fastest. Although working on speed can make it easier to play at normal speeds as others have said. The trick with having all that speed and technique is to have the self discipline to only use it when required.

Try them both and buy the one you like best. This is just an opinion poll.

If you don't have lights, you should .. buy these

The problem with lighting from the floor is it ruthlessly shows the number of chins you have. -
Yes I wondered about that as I thought it was now agreed that she did play on a lot of the classic songs.
What? When has none been quite a lot? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=353

You guys....... If you dont like the thoery pages in PGM - dont read them. If you dont like what TBBC has to say - dont read it. To me practicing 10 hours a day would take all the joy out of playing bass even though it would make me a better player.

Ampeg B15 is the best for that motown vibe.

Fender Precision Problems- Can't hear it!!
bass_ferret replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
Have you considered an outboard pre for the P bass. Somethink like a BDDI or EBS Microbass would be better than chopping up that lovely P bass. You might be able to borrow mine. -
The Wiki is fixed (thanks Neeeepheid) so please add to the posting there. Thanks OG
Sorry OldGit - could not get on lunchtime. The trick is to create the heading first - then the page. Anyone having problems dont hesitate to PM me. -
McCartney was massively influenced by Jamerson and is the first to admit it.

What you want is a modular rig where you can use some for small gigs and all of it for bigger gigs, like a combo plus extension cab or and amp and two cabs. There is not much under 12KG though.
