1. Well with 2 channels on the LittleMark have you tried boosting the mids/upper mids on the P bass. You might not like the sound as much but you should hear it better. Defo get some ear plugs and you might have to pony up for the moulded jobs given your caullies.
2. My thoughts are you are going to struggle to get lightweight gear for that money unless you are playing really small venues.
3. Light weight means digital amp and neo speakers and I cant see you getting that for £500. Other than that look at the usual suspects in this price range, Ashdown, Trace, Peavey etc.
4. What is you budget (cant be bothered to look up the prices)
5. I think there is a epifani combo and extension for sale.
6. I never read the theory stuff in BGM but am sure many do. I dont need super chops for Ferrets gigs and I have never practiced or had a lesson. Did have guitar and banjo lessons though. I used to read but haven't for years. But having the chops can make a difference, as the impact of Jimmy Blanton on Jazz in the 40's and Jamerson/Entwistle repeating the trick in the 60's for their respective genre's would not have happened without their technical ability. OTOH, a lot of guys play stunt bass with little musical relevance cos they can, and the more strings they have usually the more stunt the bass.
7. Ohm invented Ohms Law. There is a really good explanation of all this on the wiki.
8.
Karma I suppose
Well I could have revived the old thread but I think enough was said. Its been a bit boring here lately and there is a limit to how much I am comfortable baiting ian, ARGH has gone missing and finnbass is a bit of a BFM love in (no dis Finn) so I spent some time on the wiki instead.
9. Most of the venues we play have got their own lights so getting something cheap and cheerful like this makes sense. On the other hand if you normally play venues with no lights some i-colour like this makes more sense than par cans. Most of the bands I see where I go for good beer and live music dont have lights and those that do look loads better even if they dont sound better.
10. So between you and Lorne, who I have not seen much lately, who has the bigger problem. I think he has with his 8 strings.
11. Good job! They say that PVA is stronger than the wood if you wait for it to go off properly. It is still very f***ing pink mind
12. Have put a load of new stuff in the wiki - some shamelessly plagurised. Have a look or better still add something yourself.
13. A lot of it depends on the service you get in the shop - or not.
14.
also pay attention to where you cab is in relation to the wall, if you can't get it on the wall then you need it about 7 feet away from the walls otherwise you get phase cancelation (or something like that) and it will seem to cut you volume.
See the wiki re cab positioning. Lots of good advice but one thing is maybe worth mentioning from my experience. For the first 25 years with the Ferrets I was always too loud. I had to turn up so much to be heard using a variety of rigs. Since I got my EBS rig they guys have never complained about my volume and often say I am not loud enough.
15. +1 for the EBS - the sansamp is a toy in comparison.
16. Not me.
17. But you are using a crossover - not putting the same signal through different cabs.
18. Brand New Heavies
19.
Nice GB, Ferret
Thanks Jonny. The beauty of a custom build is you dont have to accept the P/J dichotomy. Mine is in-between; thicker than a pencil, thinner than a log. Usual caveat - there are other builders.
20. There are some good articles on the wiki about some of this stuff. What Merton says really, if it is farting turn it down. The business about what o'clock you have on the knobs can be pretty meaningless as well cos it depends in the make, some give all the volume at the start to con people into thinking they are more powerful than they are - then dont get any louder. This is also often the case with amps with limiters protecting the output (like Peavey), the limiter cuts in when you reach say 5 on the knob and the rest is wasted.
21. TBH it depends on so many variables and between different manufacturers it is really hard to give a definitive answer. Up until recently the choice was really between 10's and 15's. Some players said they preferred 10's because 15's were too slow to keep up with their playing but that was BS - he was going through the PA anyway and that was not all 10's. It is simply not true that a 1x15 will always have more low end than a 2x10, and trying to reproduce the difference in frequency response will suck all of the power from your amp. 1x15 will often have a hole in the upper mid frequency response between the bass driver and the tweeter. Mixing speaker sizes is not recommended by speaker guru's (or is that nerd's) but I cant find the references. 12's are making a bit of a comeback as well.
22.
If you are anywhere near Coventry you should call Mark at BassDirect, he will let you try different cabs until your head explodes!
+1 to that
23. If your budget will stretch you can get a P bass made with whatever neck you like:
24. This comes up every couple of weeks. Pack the hole with cocktail sticks (harder than match sticks for more bite) and PVA. Leave overnight. Screw in. Job Done.
25. Welcome back Chris - look after those fingers.
