I gave you examples earlier, none of which were ambient or death metal, you dismissed them as being sh*t. And who's actually said "just look at all the trings its got" ?.
Man you are so tight. I did not say the music was sh*t I was talking about where punters get their sh*t and that means something completely different. I am sure if I could be bothered I could turn up clips that say look at x playing his y string bit I cant.
In my experience the majority of people who are not musicians only like music they are familiar with. This means that no matter how tuneful and accessible your music is, if it isn't on the radio at least once a day they won't like it...
You are absolutely correct and it has always been thus. Trust me unless you listened to the late great John Peel you never heard much rock on Radio 1 in the 70's. Zeppelin did live shows for John and In Concert on BBC Radio but they never got played on peak time radio. They became huge despite never having released a single.

I've played a 6 string with wide spacing and found it very uncomfortable - I did not like it much. I did ask Dood when he got the Doodle how you play it. I can only go by what I see posted on here and most of it is w***ery played (tapped) in the guitar register - which is why it gets viewed as stunt bass (and not just by me). I would love to see you rocking out with a good band and your 9 string on "Later" Ross. I'd like to see Steve and his looper doing likewise (even if he only plays a 6 string).
Well, quite a few people on this thread have said they'd like to hear an example of good music played on ERBs... it's a given that what's played is going to be good
Including me and I'm still waiting to hear something I think is good. Its not a given that what's played is going to be good. I dont dig ambient and I dont dig death metal so I'm still waiting.
Well thats 2 more strings you 'accept' as being allowed upon a Bass guitar than last year John. Didnt you and OG have a bit of a to do over him getting a 5 back on Bassworld?
Me and Si - dont think so. I've never been that bothered about 5 and 6 string basses although I dont like it when some of our younger members feel pressurised into getting more strings they dont really need or get the impression that having more strings makes them a better player, or want to progress to 5 and 6 string basses before they go out and start having fun with gigs and groupies - well gigs anyway. I dont like it when people say the 4 string is finished, out of date etc. I think I said quite early on in this thread that I think it becomes a big wide tappy thing (aka ERB) when it cant be played like a regular bass and a 7 with tight spacing and fingers like bananas might be played like a regular bass. I dont think your 9 can be played like a regular bass though.
Must have missed that post, who was it? And I'm not sure "nutters" is the collective term.
Nutters is probably not the collective but it does seem to fit sometimes. But stuff does get posted just cos of all the strings.
if anything, Joe Q Public could give a ratsass how many strings you've got or what instruments you use, as long as the result is pleasing to their ears.
Thats what I keep saying but you blokes are not listening. Thats not what keeps getting posted on here by you ERB nutters - its not "listen to this great music" it is "look at all those strings"!
-
You just cant get it can you. Joe public is not gonna go looking on myspace for this sh*t - they are gonna buy their sh*t from Amazon and that is the only reason for my Amazon test. Thats what is meant by music that is accessible to people that are not musicians. And FWIW I dont consider a 6 to be an ERB.
"what is proper music" "music that is accessible to people who are not musicians" as opposed to music that is playable by people who are not musicians?
So throwing musical snobbery into the mix as well
-
So what is 'proper' music?
Music that is accessible to people who are not musicians.
-
Been there - done that. When someone makes some proper music on an ERB peolpe will take them seriously. Its the music that determines ones opinions not the number of strings. Some people just dont/wont get that.

Defo try it out. Built like a tank but weigh a ton. Even better if its fitted with a Black Widow!

Tried TI Jazz Flats again on my fretted GB. Loved them. Funny thing is I tried them before at a different venue and they didn't really cut through enough so I took them off again. Its a funny old caper this. There is an informative thread on flats here

Well it definitely helped with the boom but the loud note still came out - only clearer and a G! The did make it easier to tune out with the notch filter on the EBS and overall I was happy with the sound. Maybe the loud note is not caused by the stage? One for the experts maybe.
Totally beats 'my amp go up to No.11'
Whats wrong with having an amp that goes up to 11? I wanna serarate forum for amps that go up to 11 Thread was getting a little deep there - lighten up. Whole heartedly agree with Steve - so much more eloquently put than what I said. To paraphrase Bill Clinton - its the music stupid! It does not matter what it is played on if the music is great. I would love to see ERB being played on Jools (how about it Steve?) but ERB playing has to go beyond youtube clips of w***ery at music trade shows. There is even a clip of me singing on youtube - thats how bad it can be! Nice that Ross managed to find some stunt drums as well BTW drummers do suffer from the "what do you need all those drums for?" syndrome. Drummer in my mates rock band insisted on taking his 9 drum kit to the smallest of pubs. Close inspection of the drum heads revealed that most of them never got hit and he was sacked soon after.

Vintage Jazz through a B15n or MIA J Deluxe through POD?
bass_ferret replied to TimmyC's topic in Bass Guitars
Its not easy listening on cheap cans into my PC - it would be interesting to play on my hifi or through studio monitors. If I had to say I would go for the second being the Active/POD. The playing on both is quite bubby and I would have preferred to be able to hear a slow passage and the notes more developed but then it would probably be obvious. -
In a word - yes. It was never an official colour and was the result of a batch of Fiesta Red paint that faded. So you need a Jazz from whatever year it was that paint faded - sometime in the '60s. Jet Harris had a Fender bass - not sure if J or P.
-
Thought about that - decided I am too lazy.

Nice. I once stuck some sheepskin to one of my straps with some double sided taped. I cant honestly remember what happened to that strap
Hey GP, if you happen to be popping into Sound Control on a weekday lunchtime or after work, drop me a PM. I work just down the road in High Holborn and its not too much hassle to help out.
An offer you cant refuse. Say yes or you will wake up with a horse head in your bed.

I think it comes down to this - great music is great music no matter what it is played on. Who gives a f*** that Tony Levin plays stick on some Gabriel albums - I dont. Unfortunately most of the you-tube clips that get pasted onto basschat are circus bass, stunt bass or musical novelty acts - call it what you will. That shapes the opinions of people like me who's only exposure to ERB playing is the clips posted on here.

Not as sexy - depending on taste - but it is for sale and cheap as chips http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=275&hl=
So what are we to do? Well, there are two sets of voices that need disregarding if we're up for pursuing music of substance - firstly, the luddites saying 'that's not a real bass' - yeah, yeah, then call it's a f***ing banjo, what you label an instrument has has no bearing whatsoever on the validity of the music it makes...
Have you played a bass banjo?

+1 When I called it circus bass (or something similar) I got slated.
