1.
That said, however unfounded, the idea of adding a 15 still seems to make sense. It's not that my rig is particularly lacking bottom end, but it certainly doesn't produce those lows you feel (but don't necessarily hear) at pro gigs where your organs reorder themselves in your visceral cavity.
Thats down to the PA - nothing to do with the backline.
2. Disagree with the above. If your budget is £100 then it makes sense but if you can afford better then get better.
3. This keeps coming up and the answer is always the same - bad idea. If you are gonna blow a couple of grand on Mackie etc it will work as a full band PA is designed to take bass and drums. Vocal PA's can only handle vocals.
4. I would say go with another 4x10. Mixing different sized cabs causes something called comb filtering. Do not assume that a 1x15 will go lower than a 4x10.
5. Sorry if it sounded harsh - I was thinking out loud and in a rush between work and bitter disappointment watching the footy down the (empty) pub (but thats another subject ) It seems to me that all this higher/lower stuff is just trying to do something new or different cos everthing has been done before. Their Satanic Majesties invented death metal and no one has done it better (imho).
6. Its not that easy. Sell the Ashdown and by a proper rig.
7. I was into metal before you was born mate - only it was called heavy rock then.
8. What is progressive about playing metal an octave down? I said as much about the Death Metal that ARGH posted - metal riffs just down an octave.
9. +1 for the microbass II
10. Thanks Simon - its not something to have on list of things to do..... The inquest was a barrel of laughs as well.
11. Yeah Yeah Yeah

Kustom

Jamerson used an old Kustom. They have been around a long time.
13. You should always control the volume using the master rather than the gain or input volume. Some amps sound sh*te if they dont have a strong enough input signal. Often they have clip lights or vu meters (on ashdowns that apparently dont work) that are supposed to flash occasionally. I always liked the old trace system of coloured lights (shame I hated the sound).
14.
Getting your vocalist not to go on and on between numbers so everybody sits back down - priceless.
Spot on!
15.
Driving so fast that you roll your car is not what I would call taking care of yourself never mind your instrument!! Hard cases are overrated! I have one for each bass and guitar I have. I use them for guitars (acoustic and semi-acoustic) because they ARE fragile but the bass is not going to get damaged unless I accidently leave it under the wheels of my car. As I always check the contents of the vehicle before I drive off, this is unlikely....
Contrary to popular opinion you dont have to go fast to roll a car. One was caused by a front tyre blow out and one was caused by driving over the dead body of a driver who was thrown out of his car and under my wheels. Of course you may be a smug bastard who thinks they dont drive fast enough to have an accident but you may be unfortunate enough to be wrong.
16. That will be Hyperion then.
17. Nice bass.
18.
Ref: hard cases - too heavy, too cumbersome and not very practical. I have been gigging without hard cases for over 20 years and not so much as a scratch - I guess taking care of your instrument is as much a state of mind as it is a single purchase.
Having rolled a car twice doing gigs - I beg to differ.
19. Seemed a reasonable question to ask.
20.
I suspect any answers will suggest the correct settings for my EQ will depend on the room, the speaker enclosures I use (2 x Aguilar GS112's) and how aggressive I play the bass .........but as I say, any assistance with this would be great !
Yep! What works well in one room may not work well in another. I always treat the settings I usually use as a starting point and it can change considerably depending on room and even where I put my gear on the stage. Not familiar with the Thunderfunk (great name ) but there are two types of parametric - one has frequency and cut/boost and the other also adds a control for Q or bandwidth. Using a really narrow bandwidth can work as a notch filter for situations like every time you play an A the whole stage vibrates. Like all EQ extremes are best avoided and max cut or boost at the frequency extremes is probably gonna sound sh*t (although useful for experimenting). The best advice I can give is f*** about with it until you learn what works and what does not.
21.
Very nice! Anyone else notice the booklet says it was tested by Robert Trujillo?
Yeah I noticed that. Did not think he was that old Sure is a sweet bass.
22.
It still goes on... So, as I tought it could happen, I've started playing jazz and funk ( rock didn't go anywhere, still got it's band), I'm now thinking of changing instrument - sell Ibanez SR1005, and take more versalite instrument. As I'm looking for 5 string 24 fretted bass, it becomes sort of problem, when looking at Fender's Jazz Basses, buuut, things happen, and they released 2007 model: http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0261000552 It has passive/active switch, Duncan pickups and other interesting things. It looks, this model came for me, but I'm waiting for your opinions, guys, on this thing.
Yes he does!
23. There are bags and bags. Luckily I can get all my gear in the car with the basses in cases but I have had to use bags in the past. There are some semi hard cases that sit between a hard case and soft bag and I would look carefully at those options. I can't see the sense of putting a Wal into a cheap bag. Body Glove bags look pretty good.
24. Then I can avoid it
