1.
I'm not going to take a side here (other than saying across 2 basses I have a 7 string range ), but in the music section of the museum of Geneva there are instruments that are hundreds of years old, look like upright basses, but have frets and 6+ strings!! I should be going back in the next couple of months so I'll try to find out more.
Early bass viols had 6 strings and frets made of gut tied round the neck for the lowest 7 semi-tones (15th to 17th Century). The standard 4 string orchestral bass tuned EADG only became the standard early last century.
2. No-ones mentioned willys yet Ross. Dont think anyone has even said its wrong to play an ERB although a few have suggested its pointless. What gets me though like the NAMM clip posted earlier is that there is no actual bass playing. All the notes off the scale for a 4 string seem to be up not down. Just an observation.
3. Cant believe no one has snapped this up. Ok its not graphite but its still a handmade bass for the kind of money paid for nameless chinese rubbish.
4.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7IofD4lSq0 This is what can be done with a 6 string, can't be done with a guitar, very hard to do with a 5 string unless it's fitted with a high 'C' string, and I don't think can be done with a 4 string. Obviously this all depends on your creativity, open mindeness and above all desire to want to play something a little bit different, and push the bounderies a bit.
Is that the best you can do? I'd say the looper is more important than the 6 string and with the greatest respect to Steve (i dont think it was intended as a performance) was boring boring boring!
5. I used to have 2x2x10 Peavey cabs - not sure if TX or TVX. Good cabs with lots of bottom. I preferred the 2x2x10 to 1x10+1x15BW. Could not believe I got more bottom from 2x10 than the BW. Now I know better.
6. Im sure someone else had the same problem with the same Gotoh bridge. Gotoh themselves were as much use as a a chocolate teapot iirc. Try a search - bit of a long shot I know. Sometimes searches work better on google.
7.
Chapman Sticks sound awful.
Says who?
8.
I think there is a difference between those who want to play what is traditionally seen as 'bass' and those who want to look outside of the box. I have no issue with either.. but I see no reason why I should be limited by what others tell me I should be doing as a bass player. What would have happened if the original stand up basses had six strings to start with???
Do one is saying you cant be a novelty act Dood The way I look at it is this - all the time you can play it like a bass, fretting with one hand and plucking/picking with the other, on the whole neck its a bass guitar. It might be a big ugly bass guitar and I still think the Doodle is the only sexy ERB i've seen. But if you have to play it like a thick and thin stringed tappy thing then thats called a Chapman Stick. If you can handle the size then playing with more strings is generally easier cos you can constuct all of your lines going across the neck rather than changing hand position. Lots of guys go 5 for the low notes and it is better for playing with horns if the tunes all end up in Bb or Eb. But having said all that nearly all the stuff that is popular enough to be on TV has 4 string bass players. I've never seen more than six strings on any TV musical feature except when Tap did Big Bottom at Leve Earth.
9.
Yeah man that Aguilar sounds liek it could be pretty good. At 1200w Im sure it could handle the sunn anyday. I dont think I have 600 Smackaroons right now though... How much are these new?
£835 @ The Gallery
10. Well last time this came up I described ERB players as novelty acts. Caused quite a fuss at the time IIRC.
11.
Absolutely! Good stuff Argh, Can we avoid all the "that's not a bass" stuff this time?
My lips are sealed

13. Most amps will hiss if you turn the treble up full and have gain and volumes up high. But if you dont have everything turned up to 11 it sounds like a problem somewhere in your signal chain. Follow the steps above to identify where.
14. Prefer it to the Ritter. Its cool not having any visible means of tuning mind (the Ritter - not the Lakky). Got a bit of soft spot for a nice quilt.
15. All the guru's will say another 2x10. Mixing different sized speakers causes comb filtering IIRC, or was the having horizonal speakers. 2x2x10's stcked vertically is the best but thats a bit difficult when using a combo.
16. Donno! Ask again in english and you may get more helpful replies Sounds like you want tubes and a 15. Not an easy combination with your budget. Ampeg B15 springs to mind but loads of dosh. Not many 15's come up for sale these days as not so popular. Scour the for sale and try and get a 15 cab and amp with a valve in it somewhere.

18. Sounds like you should mike up and get a PA to do the work. In theory the Marshall should be OK but extreme tone settings and playing might have done it in. The Peavey sounds f***ed to use the technical term. Someone was selling an Aguillar GS4x12 (4 ohms 1200 watts) a while back - that might do the trick. Dont forget that sensitivity of the speakers actually makes as much difference to the volume as watts. There is a sticky somewhere explaining all this. Dont give up man - oh and get some ear plugs or your hearing will be as f***ed as your speakers.
19. One of my favourites is This Ones For Blanton by Duke Ellington and Ray Brown. Its a tribute to the legendary and ground breaking piano/bass duets The Duke recorded with Jimmy Blanton, who in two years re-wrote the rule book for jazz bass.
20. ? No. But then most people dont have their bass at a funny angle like in your picture. I usually have mine between 2 and 3 o'clock as you look at it. Your picture looks like 1 o'clock and if you are having to hold the bass up at that angle (OK the fretless was probably not a T-bird) it might be affecting your technique.

Welcome. There are quite a few threads on light weight gear as you are not the only one with a bad back. There may be one pinned in the amps and cabs section. The magic word is Neodynium. Gear includes Epifany, Mark Bass, EBS, GK, EA, Genz Benz, Accugroove etc. Ampeg do a light weight range ridiculously called Portabass. Lots of choice. Have a look on The Gallery website and they have links to lots of makers sites as well.
22.
im not fond of the aerodyne. what do you mean by lyte on sound? and does that also applie to the precision special?
Lyte on sound - I found it lacked bottom, weight if you like Not tried a precision special but opinions from those that have were mixed. There have been a few if you can get the search to work.
23. The daddy of all speakers is either the Cerwin Vega 18 inch Earthquake with 2.5 inches of cone excursion or the EV 30 inch that I think was used by Accugroove in a silly cab.
24.
Peavey do a 2x12 bass cab cheap, looks a bit like the BFM Omni10 which you would be much better off with weight wise and soundwise.
Do they? Just looked on Peavey.com but no 2x12 bass cabs.
25. Advise caution with the Precision Lyte - I found it Lyte on sound. Wot I said in your OP - Aerodyne.
