I could host one in my Church hall but am at the top of North Wales and I guess off the beaten track. What would be great would be to have one with an acknowledged DB luthier on hand to advise on setups/repairs etc. Obv we would need to fund this if enough people were interested.
I'm up for it if it's not too far from sunny Leeds. North Wales would work for me. Would be great to meet everyone.

My current bass is great for jazz and works well under the bow with Evah weichs. However the more i play more orchestra stuff I realise that I really want two very different things for jazz/classical. For me a jazz bass works best if it's a mid/small body without too much low end. A low set up and pizz strings/pickup and no extension. For classical I want a larger, more boomy instrument with no pickup, an extension, slightly higher action, orchestra strings. Im now in the process of buying a second bass to make this happen. However I do know guys who make it work with one instrument and if you are not playing arco in an orchestra then it's more a case one great bass with decent hybrid strings.

Can you buy a cab with built in anti coupling function? If the idea works so well I'm suprised I've never seen it used on a cab.

I just can't let myself go there! It sounds like a world of pain! ...intonation...bowing....expence....breakable etc .... But I do LOVE the tone!

How much should we be paid for playing parties?
An obvious point that some punters seem to conveniently forget is that although it's "only" two x 45 min sets and therefore only 1.5 hours work, with travelling, set up, hanging about prior to playing, first set, break, second set, pack down and travelling home, unloading etc. Being realistic it's probably more like 5 or six hours work.
...And of course you can't work elsewhere that night. It's also true that not all nights are worth the same. There's only one Saturday night per week, so it has to be worth it. -

Dramatic bass damage... not as bad as it looks?

I've seen that before on a Warwick. Should be fine if you get it done by a pro. -
Outragous. Seriously not cool.

At home I think carefully leaning upright in a corner or laying on its side is the safest/easiest. If its upright for a while I put the spike in. Also a good idea to keep away from direct sunlight and radiators. On a gig if it's on the floor look out for people tripping, especially over the extended end pin. Also look out for music stands being knocked onto it and of course radiators. I'm not so keen on portable stands at home, but it does reduce the risk of people tripping on a gig.

.... Oh and in answer to your question I wouldn't recommend a 5 string DB unless you really want the extra range. They do work well in jazz, but it can make things harder to play for some people. So only bother if it's really important to you.

Hi Paul, great to see you on here after meeting you over on twitter. I'm sure the rig you are going for will sound superb. Enjoy the site and new musical direction. Cheers Geoff

Given u a well deserved like. Great playing Nick. Hope u win. -
Hey Laurence. I have a feeling you will hate the underwood. I used to have one and didn't like it. I know there's a lot of guys who do, but I still think its a choice of FC or realist. . Shame pickups are such a massive hassle. I use FC, but would prefer something removable.

I also really like Martyn's jay Haide basses. They are set up fantastically and his machines are superb. Ive just been to see Kai Dase in Nottingham for a bow repair and would also advise checking out his basses. He has some great new handmade German basses for about 4.5k. They all sound great and a couple really stood out. He has a 5 string, a couple of 5/8s, a few 3/4 and a great 4/4. He also knows how to set up basses properly and is an honest guy who's passionate about his work. http://kaidaseviolins.com/instruments/double-basses/
The last time my DB bag fell apart I bought a Reunion Blues. This was 23 years ago. It is still virtually as good as new. It cost a lot, but I am guessing I will retire before it does. I cannot speak highly enough of it. Long term it is not expensive.
That's amazing! Great buy.
I have this bag: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/2212-SERIES_II_PROFESSIONAL_3_4_AND_4_4_SIZE_UPRIGHT_BASS_BAG.html Using it regularly for at least four years now. No problems with it at all. Only wear and tear on it is on the bottom side near the wheels where I'm lazily dragging it up kerbs, etc rather than lifting it. Had some pretty serious bumps along the way and the case has always done it's job brilliantly.
Looks like the Tom & Will.
