It was what Chris did with the EQ that made his sound unique back in the day.

It was a wide range of music, I agree.
Everything is a personal point of view 🤷🏻♂️
Hope not, I just want to see it improve.
Ok. How. Its supposed to be constructive criticism.

Totally understand where you're coming from and of course, you're absolutely correct, it's impossible to please a wide ranging audience.
But... There were too many acts on the show were of a poor quality. Past it singers who could barely sing in tune (Melanie), the 3 screeching ladies, the band with the female singer who looked down to the floor when singing and stepped back and forth when not.
That isn't not pleasing a wide ranging audience or pleasing oneself, it's fosters poor booking by the production team who don't seem to have a clue how to save this dying duck.
I honestly don't think it's OK to just excuse such poor content because it's a music show so "that will do". This is the BBC's prime program for New Year. It's just not good enough and will only get worse if apathy is the overriding emotion from the audience. What's the motivation for the production team to do any better?
Let's be honest, if the people in the crowd can barely be arsed to look like they're enjoying it unless the camera happens on them, what do the producers think the viewing public at home are doing?
And that's without bringing up the painful "interviews" with drunk "celebs" who have nothing to say except to promote whatever "project" they have coming up in the coming year.
Well. It covered a wide range of music, from Stormzy through Stereophonics to Melanie and beyond. You could argue about the quality of the performance, but that is simply personal point of view. If enough people didn't watch it, it would soon go.

You can't polish a turd.
Dont need to. Its a music show so that will do. If I made one with all the stuff I like lots of people would complain about the content. And quite right, cos you cant please everyone so please yourself.

It seems like the usual "I hate everything about the Hootenanny" thread that we have every year. Obviously putting the term "Constructive" in the title was just a sleight of hand. Anyhow, its a TV prog with music in it so it always gets my vote, even if some of the music is not to my taste.

Its a bit weird. Surely Richard, in the shortened version, is a mans name, or where would Mr Tracy be? But it changes it to something strange.

Corrie and East Enders? Are you familiar with these? I am not.
I am sadly familiar with the trails the TV companies constantly run for them. As for watching them? Never, the dispiriting and often violent adds are more than enough.

The three women with the guitar were the highlight of the night for me. Great harmonies and they sang like they actually meant it. No going through the motions, I like a bit of naked enthusiasm.

You're right, it's same old....
Perhaps TV couldn't afford better musicians. I bet there is a band member here on Basschat that performs better live than any of on JH
Blah blah blah. Moan whinge moan. Its not like it was in my day. What a load of whining old fa*ts. Watch Corrie or East Enders instead for some light relief.

The early Tull back catalogue. All the great Glen Cornick bass lines. Yum.

Have all the music on that I like. Sorted.

People join bands without knowing the other members very well, perhaps? There's only so much you can learn during an 'audition'. What sounds like an ok idea to start with, may not be so after some time. We all have different musical tastes, it's not black or white, but a variety of greys.
If you are joining an already formed band you would surely have some idea what music they were playing, so that rules out musical differences. Or the audition might flag up their musical tastes.

Anyway. Tonewood? Where is that from then, a tonewood tree? I had a cheap Strat copy and it sounded superb, it was made from......plywood. There again it might have been plywood from a tonewood tree.

Pointing out that this pointy thread is pointless would be pointless and missing the point.
I take your point. It was very pointy.

This. How on earth can we be having this NWOCR thing happening - Classic surely gives an idea of age, so new music cannot be instantly classed as such?
Agreed. Purple, Zep, Cooper, Lizzy, Sabbath, Wishbone Ash, Alex Harvey etc.

I’d say that in a live setting - amongst all the other instruments in a band - all basses do sound pretty much the same... Unless the instrument is of such a poor quality that a large part of the tonal range is missing (at either end of the spectrum).
Its in the studio - and subsequently on recordings - that the various nuances of different instruments is more perceptible.
That said it depends what kind of sound you’re going for. If all you want is a muddy indistinct thud then pretty much any bass can be made to sound that way.
It was a joke, a joke, don't even go there.

Firstly it has to be Rock, so the Spice Girls might struggle. Secondly....it must be a classic. Simple really. There are songs I hate and bands I find risible, like Iron Maiden, but I cant deny they are in the classic rock mould.

People you don't get on with is mostly the bad idea unless it's just for money and there is professionalism to rely on.
Different musical tastes though, I don't listen to a lot of metal but hells its FUN playing drums in a metal band *smash smash dugga dugga* etc. It can sometimes be nice to stretch your legs a bit, no?
Not metal, too nailed on. I love drumming to a bit of jazz or funk as a nice change. Some subtlety and groove. Not my genres but a nice change. Anyway my tinnitus would not take metal.

That's why it helps to form bands with people who have similar goals to start with.
If you get 5 different characters with 5 different ideas and want to run everything by agreeing using simple majority... it won't work.
Why would you form a band with people you dont get on with and have different musical tastes to you anyway?

Our band very much has a leader, he writes all of the music (the drummer now provides the majority of the lyrics) and determines the musical direction.
It works pretty well, all of our opinions are listened to when something comes up, but we all know that the final decision is his. I think we're all ok with it, although there are occassional spats beteeen him and the other singer, nothing major though.
As for the o/p, that's a pants thing for the band to do, but as others have said, forget about them and move on. There will be better things on the horizon.
Well if he writes all the material and decides the musical direction then he fits the "Solo musician with hired hands" slot, as I said.

Never understood this "Band leader" thing, unless its a brass band. Every band I have been in has been a democracy. Unless its a solo musician with an understanding that the rest are simply hired hands. Anyway, they sound like a bunch of twunts, you are well out of it.

The most unlikely choice of Christmas song ever - mentioning Christmas does not a Christmas song make!
One of the best, I think. It has thought provoking lyrics. Centuries of conscript soldiers away from home for Xmas. Heartbreaking. Lyrics maketh the song.
Motivation when not in a band

Ok, but if there were never any start ups there would soon be no bands, as the old tired outfits split up.
