Not from them directly, but they link to Poly Effects who make the Poly Beebo. So I suspect that NAM technology is used there. This pic shows the Amp selection screen with "AMP NAM": PS: yep, in this recent video the reviewer shows us how NAM works in the Beebo. PPS: the mod.audio Dwarf also uses NAM. It looks more like what I would want e.g. USB Host support, headphone output.

I heard about this recently, and spent some time with it this morning. It's free amp & cab sim software, standalone or plugin, for Windows or Mac. Not to be confused with NeuralDSP or mod.audio, which have been discussed here before. (NAM code is used in the mod.audio amp & cab sims, I believe.) The cab sim uses standard impulse responses (IRs), mono only, while the amp sim uses a custom capture format called NAM files. Lots of both types can be found for free on tonehunt.org. I tried it on my M1 Mac Mini, as a plugin in Apple MainStage and GarageBand, with either my pedalboard first or with other effects in MainStage. (NAM itself has no other effects.) These apps come with amp models too, though pretty limited e.g. for bass there only are a couple of Ampeg models and a generic "modern" amp and studio preamp. You can use the guitar amp models, of course e.g. virtually attach a 1x15" to a Vox AC30 if you like. The whole field of amps and cabs is something I'm trying to learn more about and figure out what I want. While I have a hankering for the Bass Beast Of Terror tone that John Wetton got with King Crimson through HiWatt stacks, I get that it's not going to be appropriate in all situations. I didn't look for HiWatt specifically, but I did load up an Ampeg SVT model with a 8x10" cabinet (of course), Fender Bassman 50 amp, and tried various IRs including the DarkGlass 4x10" models I've had for a while that use different mics and miking techniques. The first problem you notice when doing this is that you have no gain control within NAM itself: it's baked in to the loaded model, along with other settings. You can see this if you download other amp packs e.g. the Fender Bassman 50 pack contains 145 models covering the normal channel, deep channel and jumpered configurations, Bright Switch on or off, and gain from 0 to 10 in 0.5 steps. Plenty of options as long as you know what you want! Other amp packs include multiple amp EQ settings, though NAM has a 3-band EQ. Still, it's free, and there seems to be a decent-sized community behind it, taking captures of their real amps. It's great for someone like me who never gets the chance to feel my trousers flapping in the breeze from a SVT stack.

I haven't put any oil on my TWB43 bidy, now I'm wondering whether I should. I'm not at home at the moment to check. I'm not sure mine needs any, it doesn't look quite the same as yours.

Kyalami is another cool F1 track name: home of the South African Grand Prix back in the day.

I had the honour of taking some pictures of @Smanth with @Betsy - hope they came out OK. About the only annoyance was @Wolverinebass & I having to get a taxi from Weybridge after South Western Trains caused us to miss the connecting train there. I had a great time geeking out about bass with you all, at one point I think I was even bloviating about the engineering meaning behind the Modulus Graphite name (it’s all about the stiffness).

Cool! If you fancy company on the trip, tell us which carriage you’re in. I’m almost at Clapham Junction, will look for some breakfast here before the train.
-
I’m aiming to get the 09:19 from Clapham Junction via Weybridge, then Shanks’ Pony for the last mile. Anyone else slumming it in that direction? 🚃
-
I also plan to bring: a cheap and nasty pedal with a challenge to get a usable sound from it. 😑
-
Oh, good grief - I'm going to be a kid in a candy cake store, surrounded by bass and hopped up on sugar. I'll have to stick to tea! 🫖

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

The only recent photo I have of me playing is a still from a video, but it’s something, I suppose: That’s the modded Harley Benton Shamberg (MP-4EB with active EMGs) I’ve posted about before. They gave me a medal for this gig, literally. -
I'll make sure to not wear a spiky belt buckle, I don't want to give anyone's bass a rash! If there's anyone there who doesn't have to drive away, I'd also be interested in maybe hitting a pub in Addlestone for grub and a pint. Or no pint, whatever. 🍻

When I put my name down the Bash was nearly three months away, now it's only three weeks away. Don't forget to pack spare strings: it's better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them, yadda yadda. Are we going to have some of these things? 🤔
-
Are the raffle prizes to be donated by us? I have a pedal I kind-of bought by mistake, because I forgot to remove it from the Thomann shopping basket, and I'd be happy to donate it for a good cause.

Looks like some real bass royalty will be in attendance… plus a few BCers! 🙃
-
I would love to try an 8-string, given how much I want the tone John Paul Jones gets on tracks like Leafy Meadows (solo) or Gunman (Them Crooked Vultures).

Cool dude - I saw his one-man show at a comedy festival here in Dublin. He has some stories to tell, for sure, maybe he'll have a few for us?
-
OK - I haven't been back to London in years, so this is a good pretext for a few days there. I'm also planning to hit the guitar shops, maybe even Anderton's in Guildford. Booked a couple of Ryanair "Basic" flights to and from Dublin, so baggage space will be very limited, but I think I can squeeze a couple of pedals in. @cetera - Charvel 3B, ESP Surveyor '87, Fender FSR PJ Precision, Hamer Impact, Italia Imola, Spector NS2, Spector Euro, Spector EuroX (Spectorbird), Spector Pulse II, Gallien Krueger 400RB & Legacy800, GenzBenz Neox 2x12 @TheGreek - All short scale this year - a @Jabba_the_gut short scale 5er, Mini Ray, Short scale P bass @Harlequin74 - Zoot Performer, Status Shark, Spector QV4 , Markbass TTE501 and Matching CAB. Maybe the Lehle Basswitch… @Frank Blank - @Jabba_the_gut short scale fretted and fretless, JMJ Mustang, QSC K12.2, Grace Design Alix @TrevorR - Mk 1 Wal, Wal Pro IIE, Aria SB700, Frankenjazz, pedals and MarkBass LMII & Traveler 2x10 @bnt - travelling light, probably a couple of pedals such as T-Rex Diva Drive, Orange KongPressor

I'm liking the sound of this, since I have leave days I need to use, but I'd be flying in from Dublin & taking trains. So I probably wouldn't want to carry a bass, just a few of my less-common pedals, maybe.

I did a "here's my board" post here, but it's already changing since I wrote that: Orange KongPressor is making more sense now. The other day I was playing away, trying different pickup levels, when I realised that the results were more consistent and I just sounded better. I have it set to quite a short attack and moderate release. I didn't have the volume too low, really: with volume at the 9 o'clock position, the level matches the bypass level. Rather, it has a lot of headroom, and turning up the volume boosts levels at least 10db, which has an effect on the drives down the line. So I'm going to use it that way, always on, and bypassing it will make a real volume drop available if I want it. I've learned that among g****rists the T-Rex Diva Drive is a highly-regarded Tube Screamer type pedal, released in 2015 at more than three times what I paid for it. I think it definitely needs to be heard through an amp, or at least amp & cab sims. I don't know whether straight after compressor and octaver is the right place for it. JHS 3 Series Phaser is a keeper; not too in my face the way I have it set, though still trying various things. TC SpectraDrive is near the end of the signal chain again, as a "finalizer" as before, but now before the Boss MD-200, not after as in the post. Boss MD-200 is a bit too much, especially since I really should stick to a mono signal. The only time I'll want stereo effects is when recording to computer, where I might add some modulation etc. in the mix. It doesn't help my basic tone, though. Expression pedal works fine and can go to the side of the board, doesn't have to be on the board as in the picture.

Here's my "eclectic" board: first "finished" version, though there's some tidying up to do. Board: Harley Benton Spaceship 40 with the 40-B battery PSU. The PSU is built in to the board: I'm surprised they don't advertise these boards more, but they just happened to release a short promo video yesterday. There are wider 60cm and 80cm versions too. It uses an external 24V universal PSU. Signal Chain: Peterson StroboStomp Mini tuner; you can't beat a strobotuner in my opinion. Orange KongPressor (top right): it's an opto compressor, running on 12V, and I actually find it quite mild and "non-obvious" until I do things like play around with pickup levels. The "Chime" control is a gentle EQ for fine-tuning, doesn't affect tone in general; MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, bought from @sumorabbit last week, arriving yesterday. So I'm still figuring it out, but like what I hear so far. JHS 3 Series Phaser: from a local shop here, I was kind-of surprised they had one. Can be obnoxious if I want, but in general I have the blend dialled back a bit and feedback switch off, so it's more about gentle movement and I like it a lot. T-Rex Diva Drive: also new, a bit of a punt on bass; possibly the cheapest overdrive with a mix control, it also has a low voice EQ switch. Having it after the compressor might be a mistake, since I feel like I want a more dynamic drive attack. More tuning required. Tone City Matcha Cream: a fairly blunt instrument. A cheap Green Russian Big Muff clone, I'm told. You lose bass if you have the tone control near the top. Some interesting interactions with the other pedals. Boss MD-200: this is me trying to figure out what kinds of modulation I like, since I've hardly used any besides phaser. It looks like I'm only in to subtle modulation, and the MD-200 does far more than I need. I like the Overtone function for pseudo 8-string, but if I have e.g. fuzz and/or phaser going too, it's a wall of sound. That too-big Akai pedal is currently set to control effect depth. I don't know if I'll keep this long-term. TC SpectraDrive: my oldest pedal, this will be the "finalizer" as required for the application. At the moment I'm only using the stereo Aux In from the MD-200 and then to headphones. I can use it as a limiter / amp sim / DI, or bypass it if going in to a house amp. Known Issues: Gain structure needs work. I probably have the output volume on the KongPressor too low at this point, affecting how the octaver and the drive stages behave. No delay or reverb yet: does it need any? I don't know. Cab sim needed? I know stereo bass is not really a thing in live settings: it's ear candy on headphones for now, but I shouldn't get too used to it.
-
I’m relatively new to this - first proper board should be on here in a couple of days - and one combination I’ve tried is with my old TC Spectradrive at the end of the chain with a limiter-type TonePrint. In a live DI situation, though, I know that the mix engineer typically has limiters on every channel anyway, so I don’t really know.

I'm definitely learning a lot since last time I posted. In the last few days I added a Boss MD-200, since I want to try more modulation options. So far they are mostly very nice in moderation, but I'm just starting with that. It has the Overtone function, which I'm trying for that psuedo-8-string thing I want. I'm zeroing in on tones, and since the MD-200 has memories, I can save my progress. The Vintage Phaser and UniVibe emulations are also nice, though the optional fuzz with them isn't appealing to me yet. I currently have the MD-200 at the end of the signal chain, since it's a stereo device and I use wireless stereo headphones. (The "TV" kind, with low latency, not Bluetooth.) It does have me pondering the utility of stereo bass, though, since I know that bass tends to be mono in live situations. For the moment, at home, a bit of stereo is nice to have. I'm not talking about crazy panning L-R, but rather a gentle stereo chorus or similar. The Overtone mode has a Blend control that fattens it up as desired: I just want a little of that. I do have to use headphones, mostly, since I share a house with non-bassists. Does that mean the JHS 3 Series Phaser is getting replaced? Maybe. I might keep it as a subtle "almost always on" phaser. My opinion of the KongPressor hasn't changed much: it's not doing any harm, but I'm struggling to see where it's doing much good. I've temporarily switched the TC SpectraDrive to the front of the chain after the tuner, since I think need to learn more about compression through the various TonePrints. Ditto for its Drive section: do I need a more sublte "vintage" drive in my chain? Not sure. I want to experience "too much" so I can dial it back, and the Orange KongPressor isn't giving me that. The Matcha Cream fuzz is definitely staying: I like its versatility and how it keeps the low end unless you turn the Tone control up too high. I'll keep the Bottom's Up pitch shifter in case I find a use for it somewhere down the line, but it's got no place on the board at the moment.

Quick update for those interested: the pedalboard is taking shape. The Kongpressor is interesting: despite its name, it seems to me to be quite gentle, and doesn’t give me an obvious “compressor sound”. The Chime control is also subtle, a gentle bass or treble boost. The EQ and some TonePrints on the SpectraDrive can be much more aggressive. (I’m keeping the SpectraDrive” on the board for now as a kind-of amp sim / mix compressor, and for its I/O.) The MiniStomp is doing what it says on the tin. It’s more accurate than my ears. I mentioned above that the Bottoms Up pitch shifter wasn’t good: the out of tune octaves are not subtle and the tuner shows the +1 is maybe 20 cents sharp and the +2 about 40 cents sharp. If you tuned an 8-string bass that way, your bandmates would start looking for heavy objects to use on you and/or the bass. So I’m still looking for something better, probably a Laney 85. But I’m going to take it slow for now, while I ponder my options.

TC Electronic Flashback digital Delay pedal - *WITHDRAWN*
bnt replied to moley6knipe's topic in Effects For Sale
I'm thinking about one of these or the V2 model. This one has the MOD preset which the manual describes as follows: "Take the 2290’s pristine sound, send it through three (!) chorus pedals... et voilà. If you’re into the sound of The Edge, you don’t want to miss this setting." So maybe you can get delay + chorus!
