Another annoying thing are the bass tutorials that show you how to play particular songs and you’re like “stop adding fancy twiddly that aren’t in the actual song” or worse, the bassline is just wrong

Anyone ever find a basement bargain or just picked up a cheap piece of gear with no expectation just to be blown away by it ...Or conversely forked out for premier gear to be really disappointed by it. I’m playing at home through an old valve 50w guitar head through a bass cab. The amp cost me €150 (around £120) it’s the best sounding amp I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of amps .

Lately I’ve noticed my boss ceb3 pedal give off a weird radio-like interference. Especially when I crank up the chorus intensity. I never use batteries and always ensure the correct power voltage is applied. It’s a pretty old pedal. Is it on the way out?

Practically new Markbass Micromark 8" Bass combo for sale. A surprisingly loud and warm little combo for sale or trade for a compact amp head. The amp is rated at 45W @ 8 ohms (internal speaker) or can go to 60W with the addition of a second 8ohm cab. I've actually played small gigs with this with no issues regarding clean headroom so its more than just a practice amp. I understand the driver is rated at 200W! . The VPF control sweeps from a 'middy' response to a scooped response, a really efficient no-nonsense system that works well. I am looking for a small compact head, ideally a Trace Elf or something similar 200W - 500W range if you have one to trade. Price excludes shipping cost but if a trade is on the cards we can come to an arrangement. -
I had the 'Little Bastard' 30W head and it was one of the the nicest sounding amps I ever had. It gets surprisingly loud but not much in the way of clean headroom.

Don’t get me started on Ashdown passive eq on the CTM100 valve head. It’s witchcraft trying to figure it out.

I have both the Trace AH-500 and and Ashdown CTM-100 valve head. They are completely different beasts I must admit and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I would classify the Trace as having a very Hi-Fi clean sound and the Ashdown as having a much darker, warmer sound...but that's the valve heads head, I've no Idea what their SS / Hybrid heads are like.

Well Mark Gooday did work at Trace..are ABMs just clones of trace heads then?

I had a decent play with it yesterday with no issues. I discovered that some of the leads I was using were a tad faulty. So I'm hoping that's the problem. Will keep using it at rehearsals with new leads and see how I get on.

I managed to get my 2 valve heads serviced through music minds in Clonmel , they have a contact in Dublin. Now that store has shut 🙄. There was a lad in Waterford but be stopped doing it. It’s a dying craft .

It’s different alright , cleaner , deeper, having a separate gain and volume makes it a lot more versatile. I’ve played it out doors with no problem. You just have that extra bit of headroom. But I do miss the LB-30. I use an old Carslbro 50w guitar valve head at home just because it sounds so good, plenty of low end for small gigs and the overdrive channel gives the best dirty bass sound I’ve ever heard. BTW the CTM100 is 19kg which isn’t bad at all, well worth a punt. Also check out handbox 120w amp from Poland

Decided to set up the neck on my bass using fender specs. I realized I’ve set it much lower in the past with no issues ? (I’m a lightish player) the fender specs feel kinda high to me but I think I could easily adapt. What’s the general practice here ?

That glassiness became quite annoying after a while at rehearsal last night. I don't use the AH500 much but my valve amp is being serviced. I really need to get to grips with the settings. In the end I did just what thodrik suggested ed, I pushed up the mids a little and cut either end of the eq frequencies and turned off the compressor altogether, I found that sound a lot more 'natural' , I was able to dig in without it being 'neutered' by the compressor. Again I concur, a small level of compression still compresses too much.

How do users feel about the scooped Enq preset options or the compressor (I have an AH-500) . I feel it can kill the sound a little ?

Valve in > Class D out; Valve in > AB transistor out; Transistor in > Valve Power amp out. What have you tried ? Whats the difference in sound and what would you recommend ?
