I've been playing 6 string basses for about 5 years. I strongly advise you to try as many as you can. Don't just take other peoples recommendations, you need to try them for yourself. What works for you on a 5 string, won't necessarily work for you on a 6 string.

This is an 'as new' Acme Low B1 8 ohm speaker cabinet. I imported it direct from the manufacturer a month ago. In the time that I've owned it, it's been used on one gig, one rehearsal, plus home practice only. I always planned on buying another to go with this. I just bought two others, used but in perfect condition, the guy wouldn't split them. So I now have three of them . I'm selling this one because the two new ones have carpet covering which I prefer, this has the new 'Duratex' finsh. It is basically an audiophile speaker cab for bass players. It's designed to accurately handle a low B fundamental. It is without doubt the most accurate bass speaker cab on the market, (besides its bigger brothers the Acme Low B2 and B4). There are hundreds of reviews of this cab on the US bass forum 'Talkbass'. Please try and ignore the regular statements about these being 'power hungry', they aren't. They may not be the most efficient cabs on the market, but I have used this one cab successfully on a gig with a Mark Bass LM2 head. I didn't need to have the amp volume on more than 3, the cab excelled ! This is from the Acme sound website, and gives all of the relevant technical information. Specifications Model: Acme Low B-1 Series II Frequency response: +/-3 dB 41Hz to 22 kHz -6 dB at 31 Hz Power Handling: 175 Watts RMS continuous 150 Watts sine wave @ 30.87 Hz Sensitivity: 90 dB 1W/1M Impedance: Available in 4 or 8 ohms Dimensions: 15.75"H x 15.75"W x 13.5"D Weight: 31 lbs. / 14.1 Kg £350 posted within the UK. Or trade for a TC Electronic RS210.
A huge +1 to the authenticity of the human touch, mistakes n'all. About Jamerson - didn't Marvin Gaye haul JJ out of a bar absolutely rat - ar**d back to the studio, where he recorded What's Going On laying flat on his back on the studio floor ?
That's mentioned in the 'standing in the shadows of Motown book'. I think he composed the bass line lying down, I don't think he actually recorded it like that.
Maybe, but in terms of playability I don't think you can much further apart than Rotosound Flats and TI Jazz Flats. I can recall passing on a second-hand fretless bass I'd tried that had been strong with Rotosound flats because for me it was simply too much of a struggle to play. With TI strings on there my opinion might have been completely different.
I think that's the strings though. I've had my Modulus strung with Status, Labella and various other flats. The only time it actually 'sang' was with TI's.

I've found that most basses with flats sound pretty much the same. Whereas with rounds they each sound different, even different basses of the same model. I guess that answers your question, in my opinion anyway .

I've got a really nice Overwater Progress III Custom Deluxe 6 string bass. Do they fit into a normal STD-EBS case ?
Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 is loud enough, I play in a metal band and my Shuttle is loud enough for any of the venues we play when paired with my SWR Golight 2x10. Avoid the Headlite, it sounds gorgeous but it's hugely underpowered, I really struggled to get the volume out of it.
Regarding the Headlite, that's what I'm looking at buying. I've read over on Talkbass that the volume thing is probably more to do with EQ. It's supposedly quite a loud amp.

I've read a couple of threads on here about people buying them. Do they still use them ? How do they compare with Eden WT550's or the older SM models ? There doesn't seem to have been a lot of fuss made about this. There are very few threads over on Talkbass about it. I'm looking for a small class D head, with a valve pre. I tried the Shuttle 6 and hated it, it was very aggressive sounding, I want something smoother and warmer. I've had SWR gear in the past and quite liked it. That was years ago though, I think it was a 'Basis black' combo. I've never owned a top end amp of theirs before. The prices seem to vary enormously - http://www.mansons.co.uk/shopping/categori...bass-amplifier/ http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ts/SWR_MM2.html That's a whole £100 difference ! There's a used SM500 in the sale ads section, that's going for the same price as a new 'Headlite'.

He's probably, no, definitely my favourite bass player. His tone is great, I think anyway.

Need a Motown-y/soul-y kind of amp. Any suggestions?

I know that James Jamerson used an Ampeg B15 cab, so I guess that'd possibly be worth looking at. Old strings on your bass too, or possibly flats. -
I bought this last year, it's very good. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motown-50-Various-...8063&sr=8-1 There are loads of videos on Youtube too.

Still think my large rock idea was best. You have to show these things who's boss . -

I had a Fender USA Deluxe 5 string last year, I doubt there's really any difference. It was probably one of the best 5 string basses I've ever played. A 5 string just makes more sense to me. A lot of people give up too quickly with them. I ' mentally practised' for a few weeks before I bought my first one. Just thinking about the layout note wise, and how I would play songs on it. I found that really helped me adapt to it.
Im on a static IP here at work and have had some trouble, but not as much as at home on my Virgin Media connection last night. This morning could just be down to your tinkering i guess. I never log out but never have the forum running on more than one device at any one time. If this continues can i suggest a HobNob in the serial port.
Shouldn't that be weetabix in the serial port ? Or are we talking a different type of serial ? -

Have you tried hitting the server thingy with a large rock. I find that often helps with technological items . -
Cheers for the replies. We've now committed to doing the gig. To be fair, the money was offered on the strength of a phone call, so can't expect too much! They said that if it goes down well, the fee would go up in future. I'm really looking forward to it now - nothing better than a good sound AND an enthusiastic crowd. Let's hope they like Bowie!
Bowie ???????? Just make sure the wire netting is fixed firmly in place.
