1. why Fender do this is beyond me, but Mex models have different number of screws to the USA ones, PITA.Probably so they sell more lol At worst you can drill an extra screw hole in a pickguard. If you're fussy, glue a screw head onto the unused hole
2. $10 Chinese ones if you check the number of screw holes are great.
3. A Warwick RokBag fits my G series, not sure the model number.
4. no dings, but my 8 year old Jazz bass is showing wear on the back of the neck finally !!!!!
5. anything is better than the loud permanent tinnitus and hearing loss I suffer from, seriously. Your hearing is priceless, buy the very best you can afford, maybe even more than you can afford
6. 2 Jazzes , 2 Ps , one acoustic all are fretted. 3 are Fenders
7. there are not many venues in my city that even have bands, let alone original ones to ever gig 4 times a week, even if we were a cover band
8. be aware that thru an amp you won't hear that noise. try Fretwraps, they can reduce some finger noise.
9.
Is anyone here in a band in which responsibility for getting gigs and making sure everyone knows about them is not the bass player's job? Are there similar threads to this on guitar chat, drum chat, sing chat and keys chat? I often get the feeling that being organised always needs a bass player! My band has played 140 gigs over the last 4 years. Left to their own devices, I doubt that they'd have managed to get 14!
In the 80s and 90s I got most of our gigs. Being an originals band it took a hell of a lot more work than booking a cover band. After retiring in 95 I managed about a dozen bands til 2000 when I stopped completely. Now I'm in another originals band with my old guitarist and the kid brother of our late other guitarist. They asked me to be the manager/booker. I said no way. they said "but you were really good at it" Me "yeah but I hated it" I just wanna be a hired hand, turn up and play. Except , of course, we play originals so there is no money from which to hire me hehe We all pitch in with everything now, much better.
10.
that sucks mate. in the end i went to guitarguitar and got myself a markbass head and hartke 4 x 10 cab for under £500. beat that!!
I rock a MarkBass head and two Hartke 210s, great rig for around a grand . (I'm in Oz,everything is double your price )
11. thank you mods see? it's NOT a thankless task
12. yes to Anvil. the saddest doco and yet uplifting at the same time I go from "give it UP already, nobody cares" to "don't give up man, you give us all hope" that concert in Japan in the morning made the film.
13.
Sounds like heaven... and the only scenario that would entice me back into a band. Give them a hug from me!
I did ! they said "what the #$%^ was that for, you turned queer?" (not that there's anything wrong with that) I replied " a bass player from Yorkshire told me to do that" rotfl
14. email is not reliable. Some people, OK, ME, don't check their email every month.....or even quarter. What's wrong with a phone text group message? everyone checks their phone at least 4 times a day
15. Mannie...legend, has his own city, Mannieland. awesome
16. subs are destroying gigs. Don't need em, just muddies up the sound, and they hurt my ears.
17. I can't believe you rely on a Facebook page to notify each other about gigs. Really? A group text message not easy enough? to quote George Costanza "we're a SOCIETY" talk to each other ffs
18.
When I arrive at a gig, I set my gear up then I start helping others lug gear. Same with tear down. I pack my stuff up first then help others. I'm always the last person to leave a gig. Blue
so true Blue, I think bassplayers do more of the management roles and are always organised and help others because we feel insecure about our role in the band so we do all the extra things.
19. I'm not doubting the skills of my bassist brethren, I say John Brewster was w...w....w....wrong
20. just remember that, apart from Lennon and Mc Cartney, most songwriters' first original song was rubbish, and not too original. Same for their second original....and possibly the third fourth and fifth. But eventually they will get better. Don't get disheartened by lack of reaction etc, just keep doing it and improving your songwriting skills. I can honestly say that playing originals to twenty appreciative people is a much greater buzz than playing some cover to 400 people. really.
21.
Hang on, he was in The Bombers with Alan Lancaster of Quo, right?
Yes I think so. Reading The Angels bio right now. His first band was the Moonshine Jug and String band doing those old songs, they played at my primary school in 1973 as our teacher shared a house with their singer, my very first gig and I remember it to this day,44 years later "you scream, I scream, everyone screams for ice cream round, round my baby's door....." I really meant no offence when I said I prefer to believe John's version of events.
22. awesome to hear ! onwards and upwards from here on in welcome to the club. An exclusive club People that have played a gig. feels good doesn't it
23.
The opportunity to play in a heavy rock outfit hasn't cropped up for me. Given that's what I grew up listening to, its a little odd really.
me too, played in mostly original bands in the 80s and 90s and again now but none were heavy. My current band is acoustic-y, gentle songs mainly, alt country-ish originals, but so far I have snuck in a Sir Paul-ish melodic bassline, a John Paul Jones bluesy rundown a la Lemon Song, and a few Geddy chromatic runs. Currently trying to fit in a Geezer -like run a la Bassically Good luck with the audition, own it
24.
Yes, that's the one. The scene in the restaurant shows them all as very self effacing.
especially when they make a fuss over Geddy, but ignore Alex totally,to his amusement lol
25.
Or D - 1 "D" being the amount of basses that gets you divorced.
Oh well, if you're gonna put a marriage before a bass purchase ......
