1. yeah buy a Scarlett 2i2 Gen 2 and go straight into it with your bass then into your PC. I use Reaper DAW but there are lots out there. Reaper gives you a full version for free for a trial period then it only costs $60 for a license.
2.
Yep, same tune, known as a 'Contrafactum'. (I only know that word, 'cause I was playing on one of Webber's shows in Dublin, and I asked him ).
and THAT, boys and girls, is how you name-drop without sounding conceited or crass you must have some more stories to tell of this period?
3.
Yep - it's about 200 pages, of which 150-odd are transcriptions. It shouldn't be considered a biog.
Uh ok so more a learning tool than the story of Duck's life?
4. SX make nice shorty Ps and Js. Excellent value and surprisingly better quality than the price suggests. Put it this way, since I bought an SX 34" Jazz bass for $299AU, my $3,000AU Fender Am Stnd sits unused,as do my Fender MIMs...... $299AU is about two Euros lol our exchange rate sucks so it should be pretty cheap over there
5.
I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Was just looking, but when I saw they had a Steve Harris P bass I wanted to feel the neck. Before you know it I'm playing a £3K custom shop through an Aguilar rig! Nowt like that for giving you GAS!!
haha you did well to leave without buying anything. I would've sold my first born to fund that purchase....and I don't even HAVE a first born
6.
save me the trouble of explaining to the wife why I need to spend money on a Bass when "you can only play one at a time".
you have to stop this nonsense NOW before it's too late. You can't play (Insert fave band name) with a P I need a Jazz for those tones. Also clearly explain to the wife that B=n+1 ALWAYS where B=optimal number of basses to own, n= number of basses currently owned
7. the second guy hands down for his bass faces and he is enjoying himself and he doesn't slap
8. A Jazz bass might be easier to play due to it's slightly narrower neck, but to be honest, I can't notice it going from my Js to my Ps. But the variety of tones you can get with a Jazz bass is very wide. From a P sound by soloing the neck pickup to a Rickish sound soloing the bridge pickup to all points in between. The assymetrical shape makes it a bit awkward to play sitting, but adjust your strap short so the bass doesn't rely on your thigh for support and you'll be alright
9. it's scary playing out again after a 22 year break. Back then, if we played badly, only those poor sods in the audience saw it. NOW, you screw up and a million viewers will larf at you.....scary yeah, I know, don't play badly....I've never practised this much hehe
10. I have one on my Jazz, but apart from eliminating some "finger on new rounds" noise when recording, it doesn't do much else, apart from get people asking me "what's that hair bob thing?" hehe
11.
Exchange rate is killing everything at the moment. I was just about to buy another monitor to pair with our other one and it's gone up £50 from the same shop since we bought the last one 5 months ago.
it's even worse down under, if that makes you feel better. I ordered a second Hartke XL210 to match my existing one. Dude gave me my usual loyal shopper discount, down from $450 to $350. I had to wait for new stock to arrive into Oz. When it arrived about 8 weeks later he embarassingly asked what price he gave me, when I said $350 he said "Sh!t, they've gone up to $600 RRP, I'm gonna have to show the boss the quote I gave you", hehe
12.
I've often wondered about getting a couple of friends to 'vape' furiously during a set though
During our singer's monologue about the Vietnam war ,I'd grab one of our lights and crouch at the singer's feet whilst smoking a cigar, blowing the smoke thru the light's beam up at him. Yeah we were hi tech in the 90s hehe
13. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" can't you get them fixed? if they are as expensive as you say or buy a Polytune 3 and be done.
14. wow that IS informative i wouldn't have accepted that beer though, fill it with beer not half froth ! As Billy would say when served a beer "Do you think you could squeeze a wee dram in that?" Barkeep "Yes" Billy "well f@#$%ing fill it with BEER !"
15.
I don't understand the snobbery associated with playing covers.
of course you don't, you've never written an original piece of music and thus don't understand that it takes far more talent to write a song or bassline than it does to mimic what someone else has done. You belong in cover bands for a reason. You probably also like being paid to play in front of an audience. Original bands usually do neither of these things, but I am cool with that. Music is art to me, not a money making opportunity.
16.
IMO it would be more beneficial to concentrate on chord tones, as this is what the bassist plays 90% of the time. Learn how chords are derived from scales and how to harmonise the major scale. This, IMO would be better than playing modes, which are generally left until the basics are under the belt.
THIS. If you learn nothing else for the rest of your playing days, learning the chord tones for all the chord types will have you ALWAYS playing the RIGHT notes take this advice to the bank
17. Si Si Si , and I had so much respect for you OK I still have the utmost respect for you, but a Fretwrap does it a lot better as it surrounds the string like a nut slot does and does a better job of muting unwanted overtones etc.
18. Reaper is so good I reckon it would run on my Commodore 64 lol....if only I can find a way to use the cassette input system hehe
19. Joyo I have one that plugs in and one that is a rechargeable battery. Both work flawlessly and are cheap. http://www.joyoaudio.com/en/product/show_155.html
20. I defer to the more experienced of you with regards to room acoustics playing a big role and more mics helping in an acoustically poor room I guess I need to buy a couple more mics hehe Si, you are a legend, thanks mate
21. thanks for gloating about your hearing in a forum where many people have hearing loss we didn't have fancy ear plugs in the 70s
22. most gigging musicians have no original bone in their body, all they can do is mimic someone else. A cover song is interesting until I learn it, then it's boring to play it, unless it's Zeppelin. But I don't look like JPJ so no tribute band will take me. Me, I've always preferred to play originals, to far fewer people and for far less money than a coverband would get. Young people these days only want to hear what they've been told to like, they want a song they've heard a zillion times because they know how to dance to it lol. we are regressing...."I don't beLIEVE it"
23.
For drums, I like 1 mic on the kick, 2 on the snare, 1 for each tom, 2 overheads, 1 or two room, and occasionally a hi-hat mic. Figure out the number of channels you need and then look for an interface to match. The Tascam US-16x08 looks like good value to me!
that is way overkill lol. TWO mics on the snare. Plenty of great mixers can record drums with 3 mics, snare, kick and toms/cymbals. seriously. youtube has lots of how tos on this subject https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fyy55ALu18Y&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=20&v=Kxcufuj-OCE
