1. old strings will not help the bass to stand out at a live gig but you've probably left it too late to change to new ones. have a great first gig
2.
When i read 'fun gigs', I immediately thought 'Puppet Show + Spinal Tap'.
"If I told them once I told them a THOUSAND times, Spinal Tap ABOVE Puppet Show"-Tap's 'manager' re the ad, I also run away when they say they have fun shows. That to me means play for free .
3. So many youngsters are starting out with Rocksmith. Once they pass the beginner stage they buy better guitars. They try emulated bass in Rocksmith and they all go and buy a bass.So many new guitarists have gotten much further with this software than they ever did trying to learn via online lessons. I think young players have it better than we ever did. I see lot's of young people on various forums so I think music is gonna be OK. PS and the reason we all took up the bass is still relevant today,to impress the opposite (or same) sex
4. sometimes you just have to admit that nothing beats leather for such things Just remember the animal was already gonna die for it's meat, the leather is a by product. And if it wasn't killed for it's meat it never would have been born. I know this won't sit with a vegan but it's the truth. Is anyone making hemp straps?
5. I have the MXR compressor on one board, but now I use my Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig's inbuilt compressor. To be honest, it's not an effect you notice all that much. Turn it off and you can't really tell. It's more like a security blanket for me hehe. The MXR is good to start with because it has ten LEDs that indicate how much compression is occuring.
6. Foo Fighters are the new Heartbreakers. Nice enough songs, nothing too far out of their comfort zone, ends up sounding all the same. Good players, no intensity No RISK
7. the one time a band says they broke up due to musical differences.....and it's true. Keep your chin up, you will find people that want to play Hysteria with you. At my late stage in life, I'm STILL looking for someone to play all those Led Zeppelin songs I learnt on bass, but have to settle for playing my bandmates gentle acoustic originals. In the end, it's PLAYING music that matters, playing what you want to play is a bonus.
8.
I play in an "acoustic" band comprised of lead singer, singer/guitarist, acoustic drums and myself on electric bass. I've been asked to consider an acoustic bass. I said that I couldn't really see the point, for all the reasons given here. The response from the band: "The original idea behind not just sticking to a full band set up was two fold and you make valid points regarding acoustic Bass. We did mean electro-acoustic and yes agree you would need to be plugged in/amplified (to the desk maybe?). Normal electric bass would work just as well but electro-acoustic bass would fit better with the Electro acoustic guitar image wise and project [ the band's] brand if you like so there is 'The Look' to consider also in this. i.e. we all look like an acoustic band. The second reason for originally suggesting stripped down version was it also strips down the amount of gear you need to bring and hopefully allow faster set up/tear down times." So, it seems to be predominantly about looks and image. I've never played an electro-acoustic bass and I have no real inclination to do so, being honest. Because of neck and arm pain, I'm picky about what bass I play. My current squeeze is a Fender MIJ Mustang with a waist support belt clipped onto an extra strap pin using one of the neck-plate screws. Switching between basses rapidly upsets my Arthritis. The band knows this, but I'm still being asked to consider an electro-acoustic, and I'm resisting. Mexican stand-off.
they DO realise an acoustic instrument through the PA is no longer an acoustic instrument, right?
9. I have the 2i2, brilliant value. Make sure you get a Gen II as it has a tweaked guitar input, the old units didn't handle hot guitar pickups too well. I bought an old M Track and it was usb 1.1 and I got crackles and stuff into a usb 2 socket
10. if it's an old M Audio interface it's probable USB1.1, they were barely passable when new imho
11. some of you who only take a backup bass and spare amp to a gig are taking far too many chances, fart oo many ! I pack a spare amp and a backup bass in my car before every gig. BUT I also pack a spare backup CAR with an amp, cab and backup backup bass , you can never be too careful
12. at least they didn't walk off stage without doing I am the Ressurection coz the drummer was too stoned and drunk
13. Aussie band Zoot's version from 1970, featuring Rick Springfield of Jessies Girl fame or infamy hehe
14. choose a gauge to suit the music you make. Light gauge for lots of bending, heavy gauge for downtuning or heavy picking or digging in, Medium for all else. Some gauges might be too stiff for a particular style. Different brands of the same gauge vary in tension and stiffness depending on the core being round or hexagonal . Light strings would make more clank on a super low action bass for instance
15. been using D'Addario nickel rounds since 1979. have tried various other strings, but I keep coming back to these. Great bottom end, they settle down quickly and stay in tune afterwards. They maintain their tone after the intial zing for ages. I think I've had one dud set in all these years. I heard they just went up, shame coz they've been great value throughout my gigging life. Especially if you buy the twin packs online.
16. sounds like you guys know how to play A , D and E chords, right? any and all of the ACDC catalogue should do Oh, and at a 3 hour gig, guaranteed that if you repeat songs from the first set in your last set, no one will notice or care. Better to repeat a song well than screw up a buncha new songs
17. try setting your amp's volume a bit too high. Then you will have to play lightly, which will solve your problem. In my previous gigging life I only had a TNT 150 so I was ALWAYS digging in just to be heard ,I got terrible cramps back then.
18. I blame Bass websites for feeding my GAS when I gigged from 1980 to 1997 I only ever had one bass and one amp. When either wasn't good enough for me I traded up. Now, thanks to TB and BC forums, after taking bass up again in 2009, I have 5 basses, two guitars, two bass amps, two cabs etc etc Last Friday I went in to a local shop to buy a new cable. He had an SX Jazz Bass in black........ I still have 5 basses....because I bought that SX and gave my SX shorty to my bandmate's two teenagers to jam with their dad, they are both multi talented, sax, piano, guitar, keys, drums, and now bass. At least I donated one of them hehe. I blame YOU, people of BassChat ! PS the new Jazz is a Standard Series, so entry level, $290AU. It plays like butter, super slim neck. Pickups are passable, certainly no worse than those in my $900 MIM Jazz. Definitely my new backup bass but maybe my gigging bass.
19. try to learn it properly to do justice to Duck's gorgeous bassline now where is my Blues Brothers CD?.....
20. they have these things called chairs now...... just joshing, I'm old and my shoulders and back don't like my basses either. I'm just gonna get a stool so I'm still the same height as if standing. Most people don't notice the bass player next to the drummer anyway hehe best of luck with the slide guitar
21. sounds like a lot of fun and good on you for donating your time and abilities for charity, good karma
22.
It’s our town Carnival today and my garden overlooks the main arena. There’s an open-mic/karaoke “performance space” and there has been a steady stream of people absolutely murdering all sorts of songs. I sat wincing in my garden and then thought – if you can’t beat them, join them. So I took my cajon across to the park and busked along to whatever song was being played for a couple of hours. Good fun, but I now have slightly sore hands. Probably better off sticking to bass.
yeah cajons are bad for old backs too hehe You need a huge bass rig pointed at the karaoke stage and play bass riffs from home
23.
Now that I think about it, I know a few outstanding musicians that can't find any kind of gigging situation. Mainly due to location. They'd be happy with one gig a month. Blue
playing originals in a small city with dwindling pub patronage and fewer pubs with live music is a hard grind. In reality, a gig a month would be the most you could do. In these cities, you need to play in a couple of cover bands as well if you want to gig regularly. It is what it is. Similar to the old "drive for show, putt for dough" adage, it's "play originals for pride to family and friends, play covers to put food on the table for aforementioned family". Doesn't quite roll off the tongue though lol
24. the obvious answer is buy another P, put flats on one, rounds on the other . It's the only way I could resolve the issue hehe
25. buying an expensive tube amp coz it has a built in DI is a stupid idea. Just buy a DI, under a hundred bucks.
