1.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for one in the end?
I paid £200 for it. There are a few dings in the finish but nothing major. It sounds fantastic as it is but I'm going to try a Quarter Pounder in it just out of curiosity. The tuners on the MIM feel better to me, but other than that, there's very little in it.
2.
Slap some dimarzio model p's in it ,a nice gotoh 201 bridge and some better tuners and it's a bass that cannot be beaten .........Like my main player ;-) . Good score, I absolutely love mine and don't think I would ever get rid.
Indeed, the tuners might be the closest thing this bass has to a flaw. Which ones would you recommend?
3. Here are mine. A Squier Matt Freeman and a Fender MIM.
4. Yup, the hype is completely justified, it's flawlessly put together. Played a VM in the shop the other day and the difference is huge.
5. Thanks again to everyone who has sent me messages helping me to find one of these. In the end, I was talking to a guitar shop employee and mentioned I was after one, and rather than trying to sell me something they actually had in stock, he showed me a facebook post he'd seen about a used one for sale. Some people are so nice. I snapped it up today - it's got the odd ding here and there, but it's only going to end up with more. I got it as a back-up for my beloved MIM P. They look particularly great together - I'm thinking about cream pickup covers for the Squier to complete the effect!
6.
That's part of it but as I've never done any DIY at home (rented accommodation for years so no need) I own very few tools. Anything in the kit that would need work, I'd probably have to go and buy and learn to use them. That's the main thing stopping me taking a punt at the moment.
Regarding tools, one possibility would be to see if there is a hackspace near you. If you're not familiar with the concept, they are communally run maker spaces, where you can become a member for a modest subscription (often you can decide how much depending on how much you can afford, how much you use it etc), and then you can go there and use all manner of expensive tools that you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. *Also* you will probably meet people there who can give you advice on how to use them. I used to be a member of one in Brighton and dabbled in guitar building there. I used jigsaws, bandsaws, sanders, drill presses, blowtorches, routers etc etc, that I would never have been able to afford otherwise. I've now found one in Newcastle and am excited to get involved again. If you are, as your profile suggests, in Sheffield, I just had a quick google and it seems there's definitely one there.
7.
it's 3/4 length which might explain the cost ?
Where are you seeing that? As far as I can see it says 34".
8. Just came across this - a new, very affordable, Fender P-Bass. http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/fender-special-edition-noir-redline-precision-p-bass It doesn't seem to have been mentioned on here yet. Thoughts? It's an unusual look and I can't decide if I like it. I really want a black p bass at the mooment but I feel like the red would bother me. Also, I can't help but think a Fender logo at that price suggests corners being cut somewhere, quality-wise. Am I being overly cynical? Maybe it's the next Matt Freeman!
9. I’m thinking about buying a Classic Vibe 70s p bass (because I really want a Matt Freeman and it seems to be the closest thing still readily available), but I don't like the block inlays. Is there anyone out there who really likes block inlays and might be up for doing a neck swap with me? I’d ideally like something like you’d find on the Freeman (maple, gloss, etc), but would consider anything of equivalent quality, even a jazz neck if it fits. The idea of ending up with something a slightly unique is rather appealing. I figure there's no harm in asking as, from reading around on the forums, some people really do seem to dig those blocks.
10. Loctite 222 low strength thread locker - strong enough to hold it but not so strong you can't undo it. The saddles on my Ibanez were vibrating themselves right down after a couple of hours of aggressive picking and I wasn't sure this stuff would be up to the job, but it 100% fixed it. Weird that it's happening while you're not using it though!
11. I just stumbled across this video: It's got to be the worst sounding bass guitar I've ever heard. What were they thinking?
12.
Not sure about the demanding bass-lines bit, but Duff McKagan has to be the coolest looking bassist there is.
You beat me to it! I find it's quite hard to not look cool holding a bass. In terms of effortless chops I would go for Matt Freeman. Steve Harris looks cool by virtue of not caring about looking cool. Anyone here heard of Propagandhi? Their bass player, Todd Kowalski, is one of the most energetic performers you will ever see and he plays like a beast too.
13. My hard rock band (Speeder) have our first ever gig at the Cluny, Newcastle upon Tyne, on Saturday February 4th, supporting Western Sand. More details on the poster below! Us: https://www.facebook.com/speederband Them: https://www.facebook.com/westernsand A cross between Motorhead and Iron Maiden would get you somewhere in the vicinity of what we sound like. If you follow the link above there should be plenty of tunes to listen to though.
14. Anyone want this? First PM with an address gets it.
15. Good call, I think I have some left over from filling the fret slots!
16. Thanks guys, that's very helpful. I'll err on the side of caution and I can always take more off if need be. Grangur, I agree, I was planning to go at the bottom of the nut rather than the slots. The slots are good as they are and probably a lot easier to mess up!
17. You could add a thumb rest in any position you like.
18. Hi everyone, I'm doing a fretless conversion on an Ibanez SR300E. It's going fine so far, but now I need to lower the nut. Stupidly, I haven't kept the frets to check how high they were. The Ibanez website just calls them "medium". Does anyone have any idea how much nut I should take off? Thanks!
19. I remember when The Strokes' much-hyped first album came out, thinking the title was incredibly apt.
20. My band is very loud. The singer/guitarist is *really* into Motorhead so I suppose it's to be expected. I like it. It's rock and roll - it should be a bit obnoxious and offensive.
21. I'm curious as to what people think of Matt Freeman. His Squier signature model gets a lot of love around here but no-one really mentions the man himself or his playing. I was about 14 when I first heard Rancid and it was the first band in which my unrefined ears could really make out what the bass was doing. It's quite unusual to have a punk rock band where the bass is such a prominent melodic presence. I revisited the old Operation Ivy stuff the other day. Even as a kid he was on his game. Anyone?
22.
Sex On Fire
This. It's so thoroughly offensive because it's not quite aggressively bad, it's just a horrible ugly slab of nothing. I could list songs of this ilk all day, ie that are inexplicably popular and make me wonder if most people even know what music is. I try not to judge - it's a matter of taste - but there's so much exciting music in the world!
23. My personal preference is for simplicity and lack of batteries. And also I just happen to love the sound of a passive p-bass. But to each his own. Stingrays are active and I'm sure plenty of people around here dig them.
24. I like it! It's so cool that it manages to be both totally unique AND instantly recognisable as a p bass at the same time.
25.
Is there anywhere in the south that has stock of the MIM 50s P? I'd quite like to get my hands on one.
GAK (Brighton) have them on their website. They might also have them in the shop - maybe worth asking.
