Thanks for that link! It’s something I came across it entirely by accident many years ago and have mentioned it to as many people as I can over the intervening years, sometimes to be met with sceptism, so it’s good to see some evidence to back it up as it’s been a game changer on a couple of occasions.

I work in a special school and have been teaching a large number of dyslexics for over two decades, some great advice above, I would add that making everything larger, as you may do for someone visually impaired, may also help as it increases separation of the characters. For some dyslexics, the covering of one eye can help in the initial learning phases. It won’t work for many but is so easy to try it’s worth a go. Many people with dyslexia are superb at working around by using their memories and other tricks and systems that will be personal to them so try as many strategies as you can and see what works for them. Above all be flexible to their needs. The very fact you have bothered to ask shows you are open to finding new ways to help them so I am sure you will be fine.

I have a few I have been trying to sell for ages, would probably be easier to shift Betamax tapes and Zip drives.

What do audiences really want from the bass player?

The bastard child of Steve Harris and Dave Murray? Not a pleasant though 🙂 -

For me bass players fall into two categories, the first stand out in the mix and really notice what they are playing, the second prop up the other players and fill in the sound, you really notice if they aren’t playing. Being in a covers band I am conscious that I cross both of those depending on the song we are playing. I guess most people would see the first as superior but if the second is what the song needs then that’s good to. As long as the punters are happy and the bass player is enjoying themselves all is good surely. In terms of set up and kit that, is very personal. One of the best sounding bass players I have ever heard was in a small reggae band I saw last year with a patched up bass running through a battered Yamaha amp into a very worn Marshall cab. No idea how he did it but the sound was amazing. -
Why does Ashdown MAG 300 combo sound so bloody good?

We have one where we rehearse and it always takes me an age to get it sounding decent. Oddly I have a MAG head I use for home rehearsal as my 1000w terror bass head might be a little overkill and that sounds great. I am not sure if they changed the design/ spec at some point but if I dial in mine the same as the other theyndont sound the same. I ave even taken it in there to see if it’s an effect of the room and it isn’t. So I would try before you buy if you can. -
There has also always been the inherent conflict of interests where the very people doing the reviews may be reliant on the advertising income from that supplier. I am sure some maintain a distance but the reality is that a very poor product is not likely to be genuinely reviewed if the revenue stream from advertising could be adversely affected.

I have to admit to being the other way round, the big shiny ads are just annoying but the hilarious snake oil type ads you mention are worth a laugh if nothing else.

The big issue here is that it’s reasonable to assume that insurance with the courier will cover the risk of THEM breaking it (think about it for a second and this is backwards for a start - I will pay you more to mitigate any effects of your ineptitude) however a few cases on here show that not to be the case as they find ways to wheedle out of taking responsibility for pathetic reasons but it’s very hard to challenge them. A few years ago I ended up taking city link to the small claims court over their pathetic service (cheaper and easier than you would think) and the judgement process lasted about 30 seconds with the judge stating that she could not understand why the case was needed as I was clearly covered under their own terms and conditions. Even then they tried to avoid paying me compensation and it took another 8 months to get the payment.

I love my 1000w TB, not suprised by this and they will sell a load again. Not sure if I need the clean switch enough to buy another but it’s a nice addition.

Mojomojo is brown, or a fan though

Similar here, I do 30-60 minutes a day every day, only days I have missed in the last year we’re when I was abroad. I even took a bass on holiday to Cornwall so I could practice. I rotate through 4 days, always a warm up/ noodle then day 1 is one set (either a quick run through of some of the songs or targeted at certain bits), day 2 the same butbthe other set, day three is pure technique and random practice, I also use Yousician which I find works well in getting you out of your comfort zone) then day 4 is new songs, they may be ones we are likely to play or just ones I want to learn for the fun of it. I appreciate it may be a bot too rigid for some but it works well for me and I really miss it on the rare occasions I can’t practice. A week abroad this year had me watching every bass player in the club bands and wondering if they would let me have a go (and no,I wasn’t the saddo who actually asks for a go).

I have a cure for annoying ear worm -peaches by the Stranglers, it clears anything and happens to be the first song I ever learned to play on a bass.
-
Is it ear worm if you like it? At the moment I am continually humming Gone away by The Offspring but I love it so alls good.

Oh poo, what now? -
I use Warwick Reds and D’Addario acoustic strings. Looking for something with a deeper tone and more longevity.

We play it as well for our functions set, it’s soooooo dreary but as said above goes down a storm and is a great floor filler. Why? I have no idea..........

He was my inspiration to learn Bass. Although not a massive cream fan compared to some, sunshine of your love is just epic. I remember as a kid in the late seventies seeing some old footage of him playing it (may have been for the beeb but not sure), with Ginger really going for it and it was amazing. The first bassline I learned was that one, sadly a couple of decades later than I wish it had been.
-
I tried a few types, then gave up and went custom. They cost about the same as a decent pedal so,it’s not a massive investment really and no off the shelf ones will feel close. Once you get some you won’t wamt to go back.
-
Nope, not for me. Tried to listen to all sorts and some is ok but it’s not a genre I would ever choose to listen to but I make an exception for Louis Armstrong purely because of his amazing voice.

I used to work for Pony Express in the summers when I was a student, that was essentially what they did. You paid to have one person pick up your item and take it straight to someone else. I was on a motorbike so did smaller items (although you would be amazed what people would claim would fit on a bike to try and keep the cost down). I carried some very expensive things and on one occasion about two grand in cash and a passport to Heathrow for a guy who had left them at home. -
Strong money for one with issues, genuine or not.
-
Was here two years ago, less than two months from start to first gig (I had been playing less than 3 months at that point). It helped to have seriously experienced guys to be playing with.

It’s partly down to the zero hour/ minimum wage culture. If people feel valued and feel that the company they work for is looking after them they will work in away to promote that company and avoid any chance of them losing their jobs. Whilst there are rogue individuals that go against this, it generally works well. Sadly the ‘dont care’ attitude is far too common in both employers and employees in the modern world.
