1. I started playing almost exactly a year ago, my first gig was last Christmas time. I was lucky to fall in with a few guys at work who are experienced and we work out set lists to suit all of us. My playing at the December gig wasn't terrible but was far from amazing but I only got positive feedback. It's a brilliant way to learn more and I know I wouldn't be half as far down the road as I am now as it gives an incentive to really push yourself. The advice above is very good, from the start I concentrated on playing songs all the way through. Something like she sells sanctuary by the cult seems almost boringly simple but was a real ball breaker at first due to the speed and length of it, after a couple of weeks I could play it in my sleep and another three or four quick ones back to back with it. Just go for it, if people don't like what you are doing, who cares, move on and you find someone you fit in with.
2. I had one from them asking for an extra fee as the box was of 'unknown dimensions', I replied that is was of very much known dimensions as I had typed them in personally, I got a reply saying is a 'computer glitch' (isn't it always when they have cocked up) and not to worry about it.
3. I fancy dipping my toe in the fretless world but don't want to spend too much Ibanez do a fretless model of their entry level GSR model for about £220. Does anyone have any experience of this end of their range? Is it worth looking at? They also do the Sr370 in fretless but it's £370 and I really don't like the finish. Any other suggestions? I also wondered about getting a sub£100 second hand cheaply but limited option in fretless basses it seems.
4. Yup, just a straight boost and it seems pretty transparent in my experience.
5. I think he may be confusing it with the full size TC spark pedal which I think does a preamp/ mild overdrive thing if you dial it in, the mini just the clean boost.
6.
The GP7 300W 1x15 combo I had was just the thing. Should come in well under budget. I bought and sold mine for £180 in good nick. Certainly gig-worthy.
I have the 250w version with extension cab, I have played in a big pub room (120 people at the event and plenty of space for more) and mine was set on 3 input and one click over three output, a theatre which seated 260 people only had it on 4 output. Not sure what sort of place we would need to,p,at to get it up to the big numbers. Mine was £170 with a 2x10 cab.
7.
They probably need some degree of fret levelling, but having that done commercially will cost more than a brand new Encore given they are under £100 new!
I was given one for my Daughter, it sits unused in its bag while she has the EB3 I fixed up. The encore is truly horrible and I would think it would put off anyone who attempted to learn on one. When you think what you can get second hand for under £100 it's a no brainer but sadly schools are usually limited to buying new or at least second hand from 'reputable suppliers'. Last year I picked up a cracking Aria for £60, great fast action that's plays beautifully.
8. It's a real mix tonight, but nothing new or unusual at all sadly.
9. To be fair, most of the time 60 seconds is enough to know if it will be your thing or not. I try to listen to a wide variety of music beyond those sorts of bands I know I might like as occasionally you can hit gold, but even then 60 seconds is almost always enough for something to click. The exception for me is Jazz, I have tried it many times (especially as a mate in our band is a bit of a fan on the side to keeps trying to 'convert' me) but it just does nothing but bore or irritate me.
10. I don't know of any promoters but the Feathers pub in Lichfield is run by a guy who is mad on his music, pays a decent fee and has some very very good bands on. It's very well set up and they have bands on every Friday and Saturday plus an open mike night every Tuesday. May be worth a call and a chat.
11. I bought a MiM Precision off of someone on here which was at just over 6mm when I got it. Now at a much nicer (for me) 2.5mm.
12. I am a big T-bird fan and love that, I am a few quid short of the asking price sadly........
13. I have the mini spark and it's silent when switching on. It's presently at the end of the chain with no issues whatsoever.
14. I got one in a package with a mike and cable from gear4music which was their own branded one, I only doing backing vocals so was happy to have a cheap one but I am very impressed with the quality and can't see any reason why it won't last years.
15. Does it matter? But I would count it as something organised where you are 'on the bill' as it were.
16.
I saw Placebo 3 years ago at the Birmingham Academy. That was the gig that triggered my decsision, after 3 days of ear ringing, to start wearing earplugs for live music.
They were bloody loud at Manchester on this tour. It has been rescheduled for the 21st of November, not bad but I have a twelve hour day at work finishing at 6pm and a gig on Friday before going to see Royal Blood on Saturday, I think will be knackered by Sunday!
17. Not impressed with communication from the venue though, I only found out as my mate and fellow attendee lives nearby and was checking up about tickets for something else when he noticed. I hope no one travels down expecting to see them.
18. Ah crap, but one of those things. You can't sing with a throat infection after all :-(
19.
Oddly enough - the P Bass. Always loved the tone of a good P bass. But I cannot get on with the necks, I have small hands and just find it too uncomfortable after playing for 10 mins or so. I remember sitting in a shop with a Steve Harris Blue Sparkle P Bass, I really wanted it, looked great, sounded great, but just couldn't get to grips with the neck. Even considered a hand transplant but that seemed a bit OTT.
I don't have small hands but I don't like the Precision neck either. I keep going back and trying it but I don't think it's for me. It is on the passively for sale/ trade spot but I should probably bite the bullet and let it go as I can't every see me gigging with it.
20. Mine is first in the chain as well, but I don't run envelope filters or wah pedals either.
21. +1 it just seems very natural that way, 'accepted way', hmmm lots of accepted ways for all sorts of things, never worried me too much if I am honest. It works for me, I'm happy.
22. His email and phone number are still on the listing...........
23. Get that acoustic punk band you were thinking about up and running.
24.
I remember the days when, if you had a skip outside your house, it would fill up with old tellies - then computers - and now P basses.
Or be emptied! I used to,work in a rough area and they would nick anything. The amount of stuff we got rid of just by leaving it behind a locked fence was hilarious. Then we got a skip to get rid of the real rubbish and they took half of that as well. No idea what the ever did with it all.
25. Yup seems I was right- https://www.talkbass.com/threads/aguilar-ag-500-speakon-outputs-not-working.590217/ Mods- apologies for posting a link to TB, if it's an issue please just delete.
