1. Just curious about compressors at the moment and was wondering how many people use them and whether they are always on or whether people use them sometimes but not others.
  2. Or live with as a bit 'roadworn' and just sort the couple of issues that could affect playability. The tuners just look tarnished, if they work there is no reason to mess with them. The nut is an easy and cheap enough thing to fix.
  3. Fine emery or scotchbrite to get rid of the corrosion then brasso (or better still autosol) to clean them up will work a treat. Can't help with the spares, sorry.
  4. I had them on watching but it looks like the chance of bargain is gone with half this forum having a go so I will let you lot fight it out.
  5.
Are you sure?? This seems overly complicated to me and I've been playing for years....
As a newish player I have watched this with interest, I am sad to report that I now haven't got a clue! Back to the books and tabs for me :-(
  6.
I'm outraged! Why have they not banned people from bringing in nuclear reactors, do they not realise how dangerous they can be?
They can get into Glastonbury as long as they have a ticket, which as we all know are impossible to come by and it's therefore perfectly safe.
  7.
I'm a bit clueless about these things but why would anyone want to take a pineapple to a festival anyway
Because of a line in a Glass animals song 'I have pineapples in my mind'
  8.
Get this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hal-Leonard-Bass-Method-Complete/dp/0793563836 Best beginner bass method book ever - takes you from beginner through to intermediate standard. Vast majority of the book is notation & tab, but it also does get you started on the reading thing (if you want to go down that route) as well.
Great book but always a lot cheaper on eBay (I think I paid £11 last year)
Join a band. As soon you have the very basics down - i.e. you can get a decent note when you pluck the sting and you can move quickly and competently from one note to another - then you are ready to play in a band that will be accommodating for your skill level. You will learn far more and far quicker than any amount of practice at home looking at YouTube videos or tabs.
This ^^^^^ I started playing last October, had first gig in December and have played a few since. The push to learn stuff is good as it provides a focus and reason to practice. I appreciate that my theory my be behind a bit (hence having books like the one above) but overall I know my standard of playing is far higher than if I had just sat and home. The best bit though is that it's great fun. I am already counting down to our next gig in September.
  9.
Must admit I've always been pleasantly surprised by how lightweight the average Thunderbird is! Can't say I've tried an EB for comparison...though I guess the 'bird is only light until you have to pop it in that 5ft coffin case to carry it around.
Mine is a big old chunk of Mahogany, not stupid heavy but very noticeable next to my Aria. It's not a problem, and the sound means it's not ever going to be a problem but the possibility of a back up/ 2nd bass with similar sound but a little more ergonomic appeals.
yes i have, very similar, thats why i went for it, the Tbird's are not the best to play standing up when you have some belly on you. its a fair swap i'd say. specially with a slightly heavier Gauge steel string.
Thanks! It's getting very very tempting, I may need to take a trip and have a play with one.
  10. Has anyone with a Thunderbird played one of these? I love the thunderbird sound but the possibility of a lightweight package appeals.
  11.
Wookie error
brilliant
  12. Our rhythm guitarist has that amp and runs it through an orange cab, it's not as loud as that though. He normally has it on about a quarter for practice but it's fairly cranked up for gigs.
  13. If anyone is in the south of the county there are some good nights in Lichfield, two stand out in particular. My mate runs one of them, it's a bit variable on turn out but always a good night as he fills in if it's quiet. The other is busier and a good pub with appreciative crowd.
  14. I have one, they are very hard to take pictures of though!

    TC Toneprint

I am in the same position just having bought a sub n up. There are so many possibilities that it's hard to know where to start. It's a fantastic system, just needs to be opened up access wise. I spent an hour tonight just fiddling about but it would be nice to have access to a bank of user created tones. The other frustration is that I can only use the beam on their TonePrints and you can only use the editor whilst wired up which is a pain. I still love it though, much better with a slightly flawed system than no system at all.
  16.
I don't even know what 'post hardcore' is?
I believe there are specialist websites for it, you have to be over 18 and a consenting adult I understand.
  17.
play (as in live) a minute long intro song that fits flows well into your first song.
This ^^^^^^^ works well and gets the anticipation going.
  18. I have one and enjoy it when I play it, but for some reason it's not ever my go to bass and I have never gigged with it (or taken it as a backup for that matter).
  19. be careful what you wish for as my mum used to say to me when I was a kid.
  20.
This. The few times I've been inside a Ric bass, I was horrified at the low level of workmanship, especially at the price point. The designer was never the most coherent guy in the world of guitars, sadly.
I agree they aren't the best made by any stretch but to be fair I have been appalled by the level of workmanship on several high level basses, one make that is very highly regarded on here had soldering that looked like it had been done by five year old. I commented at the time, it was truly appalling in something north of £2k. It seems that several of the 'artisan' makers think they can hide any old rubbish and get away with it. And if you buy mainstream stuff it's often no better. The only ones I have had that have had decent standard of soldering inside are my Aria and Gibson, my Fender is dire.
  21. It's arrived and I have had a chance to have a play. Very first impressions were a bit mixed, it seemed a bit muddy on monophonic and the TonePrint was terrible. I sat down and twiddled some knobs, then twiddled some more and have now found a setting I really like. I also played with the TonePrint, I don't have an adapter for my iPad so could only use the beam function and not the full editor. There are some good stock ones though and it will be difficult to choose only one. Overall I am very pleased with it, but it still needs some playing with to get spot on. There are a wide range of possibilities but that also means it takes a while to get the sweet spot. I use a Gibson Thunderbird through TE amp and cabs. I tried a few octave pedals in a shop but (oddly enough) they didn't have a set up quite like mine and that obviously makes a big difference when getting the sound and tone you want.
That would appear to be short-circuiting the DC input to itself via the top strip of the Veroboard guys - careful how you approach this one.
I know where to go on the Veroboard so no problem there, it was just the switch wiring I was unsure of. I think the wires to the board are just for illustration on that diagram.
  23.
Cool, good to know. I was really disappointed watching several Glastonbury shows and it seemed like it was always raining. Blue
The Tories pay for the rain to make sure that the liberals of this country can't enjoy themselves, it's a little known but completely true fact.
  24. I messed about with a few and ended up with two options - sub n up and POG, I have a sub n up on its way as I speak, both had their strong points but the sub n up was cheaper.
