Bass Guitar Magazine, fretless bass of the year: ACG Salace
Yank replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
Beautiful! I do love a fretless bass. -
Why should your bass cab sit there taking up space between gigs? I've found my cab, 20 inches high, is the perfect height for sitting on and putting my socks on in the morning, and just discovered that it is also the perfect height for putting my foot up and trimming my toenails. Also, the cover seems to catch the trimmings so they don't shoot all over the room. Very easy to sweep them off. Isn't it great being a bass player!

I've played guitar in a 3 piece. Maybe he has to look at fattening up his lead tone......but then again, it's easier to point the finger at you!

I've written, recorded and played originals in bands and also played covers in bands. If I'm onstage playing music, it's all fun!

You're lucky it didn't go deep and slice tendons. Heal quickly!

It blows my mind that Stevie Winwood was only 15 or 16 when he recorded the vocals on this and "Gimme Some Lovin'". These were jam tunes that were always played when getting together with other musicians when I was 15 or 16 back in the late 60's. Still great after all these years.

I've heard some Jamaican rap that I didn't mind because I like the accent. Maybe I'd also like Irish or Scottish rap. I don't think I would like German or Russian rap, though. -

Some people just can't leave well enough alone. Who wakes up some morning and sez "Hey, I could make Aretha sound better'? If this were Singapore, I'd cane him!- 33 replies

Who would you - most have enjoyed playing bass with?
Yank replied to KiOgon's topic in General Discussion
Muddy Waters or Gram Parsons. -
Speaking of Merseybeat, just read an English travelogue where the author takes the ferry out of Liverpool. While embarking and debarking they play Gerry Marsden with Gerry and the Pacemakers singing Ferry Cross the Mersey on a loop. Actually not a bad song heard once in a blue moon, but could not imagine working there and not going absolutely bonkers.

The most musically talented musician of all time

Bach, hands down. Then Mozart and Beethoven......then all the rest of musicians down to the present. -
My Watts will always be Charlies. "Hey Bro, thanks for the Charlie!"

Les Paul changed the way music was recorded first. Without Les.....no Beatles.

Just like Elvis, they influenced a lot of kids to pick up instruments, (as Van Halen did lator). So, many years lator, we'll always have musicians who want to claim how influencial they were, because to their own development, they were.

I've got a full scale Fender Jazz in lined fretless and a Chinese unlined fretless short scale violin bass. Love them both and switch back and forth with no problem.

I love Jaco for his tone. The fretless through a chorus that goes MUWAHHHHH. That's what I think of when I think of Jaco. Don't really care for the songs, the folks he played with or the style he played. To me that's irrelevant. He was the first to do that tone. Sometimes I do it because it's so lovely. I know I'm copping Jaco, and I know there might be at least one person in the audience who knows what I'm doing. When I hear other bassists do it, it makes me smile. We know we're copping Jaco. When Jaco was alive, he hated it when other's copped his tone. Now that he's passed, I hope it's seen as a tribute. We do it to honor the man, not steal his greatness.

Many years ago, there wasn't the plethora of gear available today. You had a bass and an amp. If you weren't happy you tried out other basses and amps. That's still a good place to start. I'm going to assume you already have found the strings you like, so then you can always go to replacement pickups and different cabs. Tweak what you got, experiment with small things, and yes, the sound of a room greatly affects your sound so learn how to tweak for different rooms.

I find when I'm practicing new materiel i.e. figuring out the changes, playing along to get the changes set in my brain, I generally pick up an acoustic guitar and play the bottom strings. I can hear the notes clearer in that octave. Plus I don't need to set up an amp and don't disturb anyone with the volume. Anyone else?
