  1. Cheers! That's a nice 4000! (Have you peeped under the pickguard to see if it's routed for a Bass pickup?)
  2. Well, that's a bit of fun, isn't it; looking at the instrument the options are to either: (a) view it as the fun mongrel it is, or (b) take it on as a project which needs work and money spending on it to do a restoration. But restoring would be non-trivial. Unfortunately (though I do have a set), putting wavy Grovers back on is not a simple job, as the peg holes have been widened to fit the Schallers; reverting would require filling the holes and re-drilling original-sized ones, after which the repair would be visible. Many 4000's left the factory with the Bass (neck) pickup routing already there, so the 4000-4001 conversion was a simple job; unfortunately this one wasn't one of those and its extra pickup is in the wrong place. There's been a lot of wood taken out of the body and at the end of the set-neck and that's weakened the structure; Rics are prone to neck-lift (where the pull of the strings starts to lift the neck forwards); thought I'm not sure about how the set-neck models are affected, this one needs the routing filled in with the correct wood (maple) to put it right. There's the tail-lift issue which isn't too difficult to resolve: just replace the tailpiece or go for @briansbrew's excellent fix! It's a shame about the butchered pickguard; replacement 4000 ones aren't so common. I'd be looking to do the restore, but it could be a money-pit and the end result would still be a not so great one. Of the 8 Rics I have, only one was more than this one's asking price and my most recent one was an '88 4001 project which was missing some parts but not needing any structural work (coincidentally, one of its pickups was acquired from @briansbrew some years ago). There's a 4000-sized gap in my Ric collection, but making the numbers add up for a restoration on this one would require @Clarky taking too much of a hit.
  3. And 3 days later a Chinese site with a pic of a real Ric...
  4. In the context of the Ric police, they are likely the ones flagging up the fraudulent overseas sellers. And fraud ain't going to get you too far if the seller is on the opposite side of the globe. There's loads of "Rickenbacker"s in Aliexpress at the moment. Or even in the UK: just search eBay for "Rickenbacker truss rod". There was a number of 12-string "R" tailpieces on eBay a week ago, but I can't find them anymore; maybe words have been said.
  5. 'cept some of the sellers post pics of real Rics. I'm confident I can spot a faker, but others, maybe relatives buying presents or just newbies. It's not just newbies who get taken in either: a couple of years ago there was a shop which posted pics of the lovely blue Ric they had in for servicing, only to be ridiculed out of town by a barrage of "It's a Chickenbacker!!!" replies.
  6. Well, the Fender market is a mess, awash with "upbranded" fakes hoping to catch people out. I've seen people caught out with fake Rics and there are incompatible parts being sold as replacements on eBay. So I wouldn't be too sneery at the (albeit self-appointed) defenders of the faith.
  7. If it arrives with the "R" word on it, then it's a counterfeit and so could be rejected on that basis. The seller doesn't disclose the info, and so leaves themselves open to the buyer claiming that. I'm not sure if the buyer has to return a counterfeit, but I think the seller has to pay.
  8. FYI, if anybody is interested, I have a barebones set of pedals which came off an organ. I got them as a project intending to add MIDI electrics and an enclosure, but I just went and bought a Roland PK-5A instead, so they've been sat gathering dist. I should've put them on the table at the last Bass Bash!
  9. I had a Ketron a while back; changing settings was a bit limited. Good if you only want to dial in one sound or use a supplementary switcher.
  10. I've done similar when replying to some dodgey ads before; the seller always seemed to have "just moved" to the other end of the country, so I'd say what a coincidence, as it so happened that I was visiting relatives in that very town just next week.
  11. An interesting interpretation of a Riverhead interpretation of a Flyte on eBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185840185516
  12. Sure - I don't know if they know that or if they'd try and tough it out.
  13. I've seen that - could be an interesting project, but finding parts could be a challenge.
  14. £450 is a lot for a Chickenbacker. If the price doesn’t cover taxes then you’re looking at a possible £100-150 extra for VAT plus duty plus handling fees. The seller also states no returns, but what happens if there is an issue? It’s a no from me.
  15. How deep is your case, how deep how deep is your case, I really need to know.
  16. A rather literal interpretation of a hollow body.
  17. Darn - if only I hadn't bought one just over a year ago! @Daz39 I bought mine over the standard one for the colour, plus it's got an extra button that does something!
  18. I'd check out how the Stomp does your clean signal. I don't think I could have one as a single pedal; I have mine in a loop which can be switched in for effects, but is out of the way otherwise.
  19. It's a shame when you're wishing away 6 months of your life!
  20. I think a compressor might even help a tuner,as it will give a more stable signal.
