Tell me about Rick-o-sound: gimmick or useful?
prowla replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in Bass Guitars
Well... The EBS does what the BDDI does, but better (I do have two BDDIs); it's also got a tuner. The SS-11 does a couple of distortions, differently. The HX-Stomp offers phasers, flangers, echo, and suchlike in one box. The little switch next to it is just up/down to step through the sounds rather than having the bigger model. The C4 Synth is fun, could flip to an 80's synth sound, do a Moog, whatever. Using the C4 with just its one switch doesn't really do much, so the MC-6 is to select sounds. The YYZ is because I wanted one! The switcher at the front switches each pedal individually in and out, rather than doing a dance over their on/off switches. It also allows changing pedal sounds with them out of circuit. In fairness, I do need to spend a bit more time with the HX and C4 to really get a definitive set of sounds. OTOH, if all I want is an always-on straight bass sound then I don't need a board or pedals at all. -

I haven't got my board wired up for stereo, yet... -

Yes, it says: "Simple stereo TRS to dual-mono TS splitter". -

Yep - my box shows 1x stereo (TRS) in -> 2x mono out. The Ric internal wiring is the two channels are discrete right up to the output jacks. The stereo TRS out has Tip=Treble pickup signal, Ring=Bass (neck) pickup signal, Sleeve=Gnd. When you plug a jack into the Normal/Mono output it pushes a contact to combine the Treble & Bass pickup signals together. -
I've seen things I'd like, but I just step away from those; just a load of meaningless babble which tells you absolutely nothing about the actual item for sale. I have a number of saved searches which exclude those phrases and also stupid words like "stunning" and "rare".

I've used Rick-O-Sound to send the Bass pickup to one amp and the Treble pickup to another, or two channels of the same amp, or a mixer. It means you can optimise the sound for each pickup and eliminate interactions between the two (Geddy Lee used the stereo capability). The ROS cable is nothing special - just a stereo splitter; you can also buy expensive boxes to do the function, or this is my DIY "Hack-O-Sound" one (stereo/TRS jack input one side and 2x mono outputs the other). One of the downsides of using stereo is that you need stereo effects to use it or you route the pickups via separate Fx paths (that's what Chris Squire used stereo for), so it adds complexity to a pedalboard. Oftentimes, though, I just use the mono output to avoid the faff. -
These are the bass ones I bought; they also do guitar ones. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09BSZKQT5 I looked at a YT video and the person said the StuMac ones were the ones to go for if you're a pro, but these were good. I have a set of Hosco guitar ones and the slots are V-shaped, whereas I'd prefer vertical.

Well, there are "Trigger's broom" instruments.

I'm not into fake logos, including "upbranding" Squiers and suchlike; they cross the boundary between a copy/replica and counterfeits. But if someone wants to do it so they can stand in front of the mirror at home and pretend they've got a real one, then that's up to them. As for Frankensteins... 🙂

Ssssh - you're not allowed to call out Limelights on BC!

China isn't Japan, y'know.

I've had cheapies and thought "these are cheapo"; I bought a set of MusicNomad ones via Amazon and they are rather good, definitely not cheapo!

Synth sounds in 'Subdivisions' (warning, Rush content)

My Synth 9 pedal's Oberheim does the F# into pretty well. (He just said "Oberheim" as I wrote it!) -
Something don't smell right about this Rick

I've been to Andy Baxter's shop in East London; he was a bit off with me because I went without an appointment and phoned him from the street outside, but it was a genuine bricks'n'mortar place. -

This style works for me: This one as well: Generic shape, but the colours pop: And, nobody's quite matched this one. -
Is flanger the past tense of flinger?

once you've played a 5 string what's the point of 4?

I like the fact that we have different opinions; it’s always been so. Sometimes I even learn from them. I can’t be doing with the intolerance though. -

Rickenbackers are my favourite bass. I tried one of their 5-strings and didn't gel with it. So I now only have 4-string Rics. I do have some other 5-strings though. I like the Warwicks and the neck on the Statii, but they don't sound like Rics. (I don't have the Sub and Rockbass anymore.) -
I previously bought a Ric off him; a year later he bought it back off me! 🙂

You must be lucky then! My doubleneck had stripped threads on the adjuster claws - the claws are made of cheese and the adjuster bolts are heavy(er)-duty M4 (or is it 6) bolts with a knurled knob attached to the end. I got a replacement Overlord bridge and it was badly made, so the claws wouldn't fit into the recess, so it couldn't be tuned. I managed to make one functional unit, but the adjusters graunched at the back of the bridge assembly and putting in washers/bearings meant the adjuster screws weren't long enough. The guitar trem bridge's spring was way too powerful for the rest of the unit and the only way to be able to tune it was to lock it in place with the little latch underneath and ditch the trem functionality. It's now got a Spirit (or Hohner) bass bridge and a hardtail guitar bridge from a chap in Ireland. (Oh, and those "EMG"s aren't!)
