1.
This might be worth taking a look at. It claims to cover a load of 80s/ lo-fi/ synthbass sounds
Someone had one of those at the Bass Bash and I thought it was quite good. Lots of preset sounds, so you're using what's programmed in. I have a Boss one which I am struggling with; it seems to only like long slow notes, but I've got a Minitaur for that!
2.
Wow, that's the way to draw people in with your pictures.
It'd be great for a Focus tribute band.
3.
Great if you played in Proclaimers tribute (other Scottish bands are available)
I wouldn't walk 500 miles for that!
4.
So "Steampunk" = no strings?
Special offer - no strings attached!
5. That could well be the worst bass I have ever seen! (I might buy it, just for that fact...)
6.
Not my vision of 'steampunk'
Here's one...
7. They are/were an interesting brand; they were contracted by Fender to make Squier instruments. They then proceeded to produce their own brand, built from the Fender plans but with upgraded components! There was a bit of a kerfuffle and lawsuitness which ensued. The ones with the Fender headstocks are the ones to look for. Prices vary a lot and I've never tried one myself.
8.
Ah man, I've played with that guy before in days gone past. He brought a lot of kit for a small venue and had both of them out onstage IIRC. Regarding low tuned Rics - one thing to remember is the propensity for tail lift with high-tension strings. I assume with the right gauges it wouldn't be an issue, but at the very least I'd be cautious about converting one with the vintage truss-rods.
I think they need the extra two screws in the tailpiece to hold it down, or the supplementary string anchor option. I definitey wouldn't convert a pre-'73 vintage Ric!
9.
Yes it was a good first bash for me. Good to meet up and chat to a few people and see how and why they end up with the set up they do. It's interesting that everyone has a slightly different 'holy grail' sound and part of the gear journey is trying to track it down. I don't know where the time went - I need to catch more of the talks next year. Thanks to all who made it happen!
You definitely win the prize for the best custom guitars there (a red squirl and a pretzel is how I would describe them) - you need to post pictures up! (And thanks for letting me use your rack space... )
10. I have to say I quite liked it at the Bash. Thanks for bringing it and sharing! I don't know if you were around when some folks were talking about it perhaps needing to be louder and (I think it was me?) just said "Well buy two then!".
11.
I'm guessing that is the guy on Talkbass that posts billions of photos of his weird DIY basses for the most tenuous of reasons? Or is he the other guy who posts copyright information underneath each photo? I don't understand what makes that guy tick. He converted one of those 4003W basses to a 5er when they were brand new. He then tried to sell it on Ebay for the RRP! No thanks, pal.
Yes - that's him; I almost blocked him. There was a thread where someone had received an original Ric 5-string to do some work and they shared pictures of it with some rather shonky customisations, along with some choice words; well, the chap in question was the one who did it and he got a bit offended. But, based on that, I would probably not have him work on a guitar of mine. (But I've just stepped away from TB anyway, so problem solved...)
12. What I especially liked about it was how unpretentious everybody was and folks were just going "play my guitar if you like".
13. Unfortunately, it's at least £8k more than I have to spend...
14. I like the "it needs new strings, so I'll knock a fiver off for them"! The seller is either a comedian or delusional! (Or maybe both!!!)
15. OK - I found a UK supplier at £19, which is pricey, but less of a faff. (There'll probably be loads of them on offer for less somewhere next week!)
16. They're $9.50 in the US from Pick of the Ricks, but shipping adds another $15.50, which comes out at £18.60. But that takes it over the £15 threshold, so if it's stopped by customs there'll be Import Duty and VAT added, adding about £4. And the mail service will add a £8 service fee. So totalling £30 for a piddly $9.50 unit. (Getting two reduces the per-shipping price, but that definitely takes it over the customs limit.)
17. Thanks - his ones are not the Ric ones and are 500k. Also, they have the terminals on the bottom and the guitar has a shielded control bay. The real Ric ones are 330k and like two stacked pots (with the upper one being a simple SPST switch). (I have ordered a cheap Chinese one on a punt that it might fit, but I think it'll be too tall also.)
18. Well, I had a push-pull pot for a Shaftesbury Ric copy I'm doing up, but it turns out it's too tall to fit. Can anybody point me at where to get a Ric 330k pot with the SPST push-pull switch, please?

20.
I like it......
I like it too; it's a shame the headstock is just generic, though.
21. Well, I sat down to work out "Sunrise" this evening and the bass line on the 1972 album is different to my recollection of what Davey played (I guess I'm one of those ones he mentioned who goes "Aha! that's not quite right!"); I had been thinking I'd better go back and check those lines out... Now I've got to find an example of Davey playing it to work that out (I should've recorded him on my phone!). I liked his version - more modern and aggressive than the original, I'd say.
22. I'm doing a couple of site tours to check out some options; I might get back to you...
