You do poke the end of the string down the shaft and bend it at a right angle, so there is a little more strength there.

I mostly play the 2010 Jetglo and Mapleglo ones in the centre.

This was my selection a while back. The one on the end is a 5-string I bought from @6feet7, but I didn't quite gel with it and sold it back to him a year later when he had seller's remorse. I've now got another jetglo ('88) instead which I bought from some Guy. I may pick up one or two more if/when the right ones pop up...

I'm looking forward to having a go on that at the Bass Bash!

Indeed the binding does indeed end at that point; however the split appears to go into the body.

Thanks, but I'll stick to my 4003s. There also seems to be some sign of separation between the neck-thru and wings; curiously it's at the tail-end and I'm wondering if the extra screws in the tailpiece have been badly drilled and gone into the join to cause it. (I think Ric did do them for a while.)

Indeed - Thunders are remarkably good instruments when in the £100-200 range. Asking prices can be above that or way above that and there's different Mks which are perceived to be more vaulerble.
