I've been ogling that for a bit I must admit.
My only concern is whether it's a bit too much "real man's bass" for my ham fisted playing.. specially with all that through neck extended fingerboard stuff going on!
Yeah - a possible but I suspect a new one from Alan would blow my budget substantially. I do like ACG's and I'd have one in a heartbeat.
That Finn is now #1 gigging bass...!
Tricky.
A specialist could make that go away and would be a totally invisible repair.
However - it's new so that's annoying and you shouldn't have to do so.
But - this might be the best player/sounding/weight out there...
So I would weigh up whether this is a corker playing wise and if so, I'd have the run sorted. If not, I'd send it back. The thing is - the next one might be a perfect finish but be poorer in other ways..
Mrs B has persuaded me to get a fretless to:
- Possibly play in the band
- Challenge myself musically
- Expand my horizons
I'm a 4'er exclusively so probably should be a 4
I'm a wuss and fancy lined - also I think they look good...
I like the idea of a non-PJ design to get away from that (I have tooo many P's)
I like my ACG Finn and love the natural wood look so that's probably a requirement
Budget is £2k tops but happy to spend less
Prefer used for more bang for buck, but can be new too
What would the collective recommend as possibles?
Oh, and for the record - Kenny's Music were impeccable - great comms, brilliant attitude, delivered exactly as they said and genuinely a pleasure. I have no hesitation to recommend if anyone is on the fence - bag one now!!
And the verdict is?
Plugged in and onto standby for a full minute this time. Main power on, and a teeny bit of crackle for 5 seconds or so (my heart sank) but then silence. Total silence.
Then I noticed that characteristic valve amp hum. Plugged in the 64 Precision and gingerly upped the gain and volume.
And there it was - that sound. Thick, creamy brown goodness - tweaked the EQ to roll off a bit of mids and top and up the bass - upped the gain to 1 o’clock and dimed volume and tone on the bass.
Yeah. That’s that b15 sound. That’s exactly it. The 15” driver in the barefaced Compact lapped it up and with volume half way the radiator in my room started to rattle on low notes.
Had a ten minute play and the amp was still silent.
This is a good amp. At 299 it’s a bloody excellent amp.
I've had a change of heart..
I have an old vintage Guild acoustic which the original owner wants back and that means a big cash injection into the bass fund. Added to the AVRI precision that's now pending sale, it's a healthy pot.
Having chatted to Mrs B, she's raised the spectre.....
..."why don't you get a nice fretless and try that?"
I feel a different thread coming on..
Well, despite the crackling, when I tried it with my 64 Precision it sounded the closest I’ve heard an amp sound to the vintage b15 I tried out and loved.
Deep, complex, warm, smooth and defined.
Update - being collected Friday. Comms very good from the shop and confidence restored. They are doing what needed to sort it and have put up no arguments at all.
So far: highly recommended!
