Is it time to replace the guard on my Precision?
Bridgehouse replied to Bridgehouse's topic in Bass Guitars
My apologies - that's quite a looker tho -
Like I said - you need the original materials to get the original effect. And that way of doing it just ain't gonna work any more.

See my dilemma in my other thread. The tort guard on my 64 Precision is a thing of beauty. There really isn't a modern equivalent. In late 64 Fender stopped using nitro for their pickguards and swapped to vinyl. They did it as they were getting large numbers of warranty claims for shrinkage, warping and other issues. The nitro continues to outgas over time just like the paint, so it never stops shrinking or warping. The Very thing that makes it look so good also spelt its eventual withdrawal. Its not so much the artistry that is dead, more that the vinyl or printed ones don't capture the same look and feel of what was ultimately a flawed product

Sneaky..

So any advice on how to sneak that one past the missus?

Strictly speaking Fender have had slim necks as an option right back to the early 60s. The most common neck was the C neck (1 3/4"), but the slimmer B (1 5/8") and A (1 1/2") were also available. By the late 60s the B neck was more common and pretty much exclusive on Ps by the 70s. Jazz's usually had an A neck. Its not beyond the realms of possibility to find a P with an A neck - or you could custom fit a Jazz neck on a P body.

When the balloon goes up and I'm put in charge I'm going to make posting bass reviews that only have slap in them an offence punishable by electric chair. -
Gibson made some basses that make my heart melt.. This is the one from Andy Baxters I mentioned.. *swoon*

Is it time to replace the guard on my Precision?

Thanks! I probly should have posted a pic so people can see the guard. Ah what the hell.. And looking at that pic I kinda think "why the hell do I want to swap that tort?!" If it does crack I'll just patch it up and keep it on. It's too pretty to swap out. -

Now surplus to requirements, as I've pretty much replaced its gigging duties with my 51P and PJ partscasters. This is the "in betweenie" one - not a roadworn, but not the standard classic 50's with poly finish. Nitro finish Anodized scratchplate 1.75" nut width Maple board and neck Fender gig bag (ok condition) It isn't in perfect condition by a long stretch - there are some bumps and dings and some overall scratching (including some minor buckle rash) as it's been gigged and used. It doesn't show well in the photos as it's not really bad - but please don't expect factory fresh!! Given they are £1k or so now, and given the condition it's up for £500 - which is what I paid for it, so I'd like to stay cash neutral on it. No trades please, and no international shipping. Will post to UK addresses if you pay for the courier after I've got a quote. I travel around a lot (am near Peterborough) so I may be able to deliver to you.

These are all good suggestions - I think I may go down the "leave it on and only do something if there's an issue later". I can swap it out or get a replacement from Limelight later on if needs be. I probably am over thinking it. Maybe. -

Haha! Yes, I know it's a first world problem The truth will actually be that I'll be too lazy to do anything about it and end up leaving it -

@Dazed - don't know about value, and I don't have any intention of selling so I'm not that fussed by it. I've had it a year or so and no noticeable shrinkage as such, but these things are difficult to spot! Don't know if you can date a pick guard or not.. hmm.. I'm probably leaning towards doing it. -
I'm trying to decide whether to swap out the guard on my 64 Precision. It has, obviously shrunk - it's not cracked anywhere, but the screws on the outer points definitely have some funky lean going on, and I'm trying to decide whether I should swap it out for a spitfire tort relic guard now and attach the old one to a piece of wood and stick in a sealed bag to pop into the case before it shrinks too much and cracks or splits. I love it being all original, but I fear if I leave it on it will eventually crack. Mind you it probably will anyway at some point. So, leave on and let it crack then replace, or replace now and try to preserve it?

I am sitting here on my hands using all of my willpower to resist going down. I will stay strong.. I will stay strong..

Ah my favourite neck and just like the one on my 64P Interestingly, Andy Baxter has an EB2 in at the mo - the nut width is 43mm - pretty wide for a gibbo. I'm tempted to go have a look at it
-
Gibson should really stick to things with points or things with f-holes when it comes to basses (IMHO of course)
-
No, just lemon oil. I masked the board off to do the neck.

They are the rumours I have heard. I stress they are only rumours. Massive health warning "the internet is often wrong" rumours.. But, there are rumblings tho. -
It should be getting a rehearsal outing soon, so I shall report back..
