Gibson Thunderbird - £80 - I'm suspicious

What is this fretless neck through?
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
While we're discussing Peaveys, I reckon this one could go for a bargain price. Grinds often don't sell for huge amounts, it has a low starting bid, and it's pickup only in a small Derbyshire town. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-Grind-Bass-Guitar-4-String-Natural-/151838409085?hash=item235a46417d -

Outraged at 5 strings? 4 stringers should consider 3!
Annoying Twit replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
3 strings!! What sort of prog rock nonsense are you people playing? All you need is one string...
Then, why did you sell it? -
I did a feeler once, but decided that I don't like them. It's unfair to tease people by saying 'I might be selling this, but I'm not sure'. Make up your mind, put your price on it, and see if anyone wants it. I would sell any of my basses (and my right testicle) for a price that's massively over what it's worth. I wouldn't sell any of them for the market price, so I have no right sending out 'feelers' just in case.

Have prices gone up that much?

Quite a few things go into my watch list just because they seem so overpriced. It's incredibly rare for them to sell. -

I googled the C4 Zephyr and the photos that I saw were bolt-ons. I've got a vague feeling that there was a non-Grind Peavey model that had that red shiny finish, but some search has not revealed what it might be (assuming it does exist). We need Kodiakblair in this thread. -

One string fretless bass
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think you mean "2 String Fretless Bass" and "what happened to the other 4".....?!!!
Fair 'nuff. It took some peering to see the (presumed) high C string, but it is there. -

I think £90 for a defretted concord is a bit high actually. If it still had the frets and was in better condition, yes. Here is a nice looking Aria P2 SB1000, though the description suggests that the condition isn't quite what the photos suggest. The owner is selling it to fund a ukulele. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item25ae907d88 -
I wonder what happened to the other five. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-guitar-/111786572693?hash=item1a06ffbb95

It does have Seymour Duncan pickups, which would justifiably boost the price if they were installed properly. Surely they would be worth more than the rest of the instrument put together.
-
The listing says it might be a hand-made bass. (They seem to say that a lot). There's something about the headstock and the lamination of the neck through that looks familiar. EDIT: Neck through and body slightly grind-ish????? I'm not seriously interested in this, just curious. Back to Ishibashi. Japanese made Greco bass for £70. http://store.ishibas.../1/80-325491803 It is a fairly basic PJ, however. Unless someone is a Greco collector or something, the postage and fees would make it quite expensive, surely more than doubling the listing price. Something over £100 listing price for a Japanese Greco PB. http://store.ishibas.../1/80-325582703 The white Aria Pro II SB1000ST is a modern model, which isn't top of the range. New price on it is £750 or so. Cheapest Fender on Ishibashi is this one: http://store.ishibashi.co.jp/ec/pro/disp/1/80-325648803 £120.

Were I to be so bold as to want an 8-string ...
Annoying Twit replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
If/when I visit Japan again I'm definitely hitting local second hand shops. But, at the moment there's nothing I want enough to go through the whole import process. Anyhoo - we should probably go back to the 8 string topic of this thread. I started another thread on Japanese shops in general. -
'Unique' 50's P bass on ebay...
Annoying Twit replied to TPTroll's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It sold...... The problem is of course you've got to remember that when PT Barnum said 'There's one born every minute' the world's population was much lower. If we assume that the proportion of fools in the population has stayed steady, that would mean that there's one born about every seventeen seconds nowadays. -
Completely unrequested by anybody, here are some results of searching for second hand basses on the internet in Japanese. http://www.shimokura..._bass_list.html Look at all the Fender Japan basses for the low £200s. Free postage to anywhere in Japan. It won't be free to the UK, but they do post! http://www.shimokura...om/kaitori.html There is an English page, but it doesn't seem to mention posting internationally. I'm going to continue searching and edit this page. If anyone wants to search, you can paste this into google: 中古 ベース TC Gakki - really good range here IMHO. The Atlansia bass is sold out, but this Aria ProII SB700 is about £300. (Plus postage, plus duty, if they would sell it). http://www.tcgakki.c...6/tc064936.html List of brands on the left is in English, click on a brand then you see the basses. Komehyo - Not as impressive as the other shops, but there are some Fender Japan basses that match the other shop's prices (might not be comparing like for like). Miki Gakki - the third and biggest pull down menu in the middle of the page is for brand, and the brands are named in English. Annoying Twit replied to Happy Jack's topic in Bass Guitars
It's mainly in Japanese (which you speak of course), the auto translate is really slow on my computer, specific searches (eg BC Rich) routinely return error messages in Japanese, little things like that. In all fairness, it's a helluva lot better than I imagine a British site would be at selling to Japan.
See my above post. I clicked onto the English site and it looked the same as the Japanese one, so I presumed it worked the same way. Except, two or three more clicks in and it's not only in Japanese again but in some weird and unfriendly google search. I wonder if searching via google translate would be better than using their 'English' site. EDIT: Oh, Ishibashi takes you to google translate automatically, but much of the site is images which stay in Japanese. Sorry about that. A British site would sell to Japan fine. Pretty much everyone in Japan likely to be buying basses will have enough English to navigate a British site. It's part of the luck of the draw for people born in an English speaking country. 've always thought that Ishibashi may be a bad place to buy second hand Japanese instruments from, in the same way that Denmark Street isn't the best value place to buy second hand basses in the UK. What would happen if we tried some other shops? EDIT: Aria RSB600 for £219. Plus postage, plus duty of course. How much would one in this condition sell for in the UK? https://www.shimokura-webshop.com/products/detail.php?product_id=61556 -
That Ishibashi website is not for the faint-hearted or the impatient. Hard work.
What's wrong with the Ishibashi site? It looks quite straightforward to me with a few clicks to get to the second hand bass list and with many search filters. EDIT: I take that back. The English site is cr*p compared to the Japanese one. -
Congratulations. I'd been curious about what the 'Progressive' six string was like.

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Are any deko owners having buyer remorse? My acoustic fretless 4 is nice and the only work that needs doing is the high action / nut slot deepening..... Fighting with myself whether I can justify keeping it (too many basses, and others are objectively better instruments)!!! Anyone else have this "problem"?
I'd like to get to a position of selling them on and buying new ones, keeping the ones I really like (fretless acoustic isn't going anywhere). But, I never get around to it. Still planning for a classical deko as the next purchase at some time. -
Low output, compared to every other bass I own, and a touch on the noisy side.
There's a bit more than that, I think. My Rockbass has low output pickups, but when boosted they sound great. My HB PJ has low output pickups, and when boosted the sound is still ... comparatively unimpressive.
-
I have a PJ 5string, as other's have said the pickups are the weak point. But as it only cost me £35-ish I can't complain.
I'd like to ask what it is that makes pickups weak. But, perhaps that's another thread.
