Interesting root-only bass lines
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Since there appears to be no synth-a-phobia on this forum, how about this sequenced line. Are there any interesting root-only basslines that don't play on the downbeat of the bar? -
Are there any interesting bass lines which are basically rootnote only? "Interesting" in any particular way, though clearly rhythm is probably going to have something to do with it. I can think of "One of these Days" by Pink Floyd, which I presume fits, but are there others? I'd appreciate hearing people say why they think the bass line is interesting.
Modern Aria's are such a hard sell - my 5 string Korean made 304 finally went on Ebay for about £130, would have been a £550/600 bass new (before they switched to making them in China) couldn't get any interest on here at all.
I once almost bought an Aria bass. Not sure which model, but Korean made, four string, active. It was £299 S/H in a shop. I did like the sound in particular, but I'm glad I didn't buy it, soley because of the depreciation.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
That's BurritoBass off 'ere selling that, and yet again, I really should be on commission! As far as I can tell, that bass is very unlikely to be any later than 1972.
I need to be more careful about listings. I end up hedging my bets to avoid posting a 1980s MIJ only to find out it's 1990s MIK or something. But, then when I even slightly hedge my bets, it turns out to be a forumite. Anyhow, I'll apologise profusely to BurritoBass for even suggesting that the date of the bass could, in some alternate universe, be even slightly unsure. -
I'm sure there are good reasons.... And yet I am still kind enough to point him at another auction for another hondo ric bridge, along with links to allparts, and their ric bridge which is about the same as he was offering me to drop the actual buyer like a rotten cabbage.
Just out of interest, how good is the allparts bridge? I don't need a new bridge for mine right now, but I like to know these things. I've sometimes forgot to bid and missed a potential bargain, but I wouldn't dream of trying to gazump anyone. At least I got a bid on for your pickup, but it was a lowball and you'd be even more p'd off if I'd won it.

Hello? Anyone? Oh well. I've been trying this: http://www.cyberfretbass.com/techniques/ha...-offs/page3.php And I've also been playing major scales, one pluck per string, hammer ons on the way up, pull offs on the way down. I find the pull offs difficult for the scale. I hope this means that it's doing me good.

Anyone thinking of buying from Rondomusic.com?
Try searching YouTube for 8 string guitar. I found plenty. You can tell by looking at the thumbnail whether the guitarist is going to be a metaller or a jazzer.
Oh yes. I searched on "8 string agile", and it's nearly all extreme metal. Not that I've anything against extreme metal, but it's not really my thing. But a search on 8 string guitar results in this: -

Are there any examples of people playing the 8 string that aren't just metal riffs? -
Oh no! I didn't even think of that while posting.

The photo of the "modern one" doesn't do it for me. Which I find strange as I really liked the "Wesley" posted here some moons ago, and Jon's photos of his in-progress one. Perhaps it's the camera angle or photo that makes it look different to me. If I can be even more disagreeable, the Cort doesn't do it for me either. I don't mind the Rick-ish Crafter, in fact think it looks nice. But the Cort, not quite.

When trying to play fills etc, I can up the speed by using hammer-ons OK, but have trouble with pull-offs. I loose control over the volume, and my timing goes to pot as I'm concentrating too much on the pull-off. Are there some simple exercises anyone would recommend to help?

Bass players who play both "guitar" and keyboard bass
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
I used to really like UK 2nd wave proggers Haze and saw them live several times. They were a 3 piece band with brothers doing guitar/vocals and bass/keyboards respectively. When Chris did keys instead of bass he would use Taurus bass pedals to keep the bass line going. You don't see bass pedals any more??
Andy White was using bass pedals of some sort when he did some two-man band live shows that I saw. However, he was playing quite simple bass lines on them, more held single notes, while he played acoustic guitar and sang. He was playing with a percussionist who was playing a sort of wooden crate thing. Thanks for all the comments on here. I've had several unsuccessful attempts to learn to play real instruments, and a side-effect of one of them is that I own a Novation Basstation, bought new just when they first came out. I've still got it too. Dunno what I'll end up doing with it.
That's cos they're hideously expensive.
From the same supplier: http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/rol...al-board--25837 I never thought of bass pedals. My aim is to be a multiinstrumentalist, and at present I'm making most progress on bass and fingerstyle acoustic! It could make sense to have a sideline in bass pedals. However, what's ruined my attempts to learn real instruments before is getting sidelined. So, there's no way I'm buying any pedals now! -

I think the VMJ with the upgrades is a good deal for the buyer @ £225. That's the new online price for the VMJ, but they get all the considerable upgrades for free. Badass, nut, knobs, etc. -

Westone Thunder 1. The listing says "RARE". I note that by a stunning statistical coincidence, several other examples of this RARE model are listed on ebay. Yes, I'm feeling a bit cranky today. I presume given the price that this isn't Japanese made. But it does look kinda old. This is how all bass players should dress
Annoying Twit replied to KingPrawn's topic in General Discussion
He needs a Rick to preserve his modesty. If all bass players dressed like that, we could spot the ones who only need a Steinberger to preserve their modesty. Or even only an Ashbory. -
It sounds to me like you need to find the best singer of the lot and build a new band around the two of you and leave the other losers behind.
That's what I was thinking. If you can find that many vocalists, surely you can find some other instrumentalists.

I can think of two. Gerald Casale from Devo and Haruomi Hosono from the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Does anyone here do that? It certainly gives a wide variety of styles to choose from. Particularly Hosono who would play bass, play bass on keyboards, and used sequenced bass (analogue synth style) in the same concert. Is it something a bassist may deliberately choose to do as a sort of widening of their options, or is this mainly something that happens when someone has the keyboard skills already. And for that matter, are there any keyboardists who specialise in keyboard bass, as in not playing bass guitars at all, but compose and play the bass lines in their bands. I suppose Ray Manzarak would qualify here, but he only played "bass" with one hand, and IMHO he's not doing anything all that interesting in the bass parts.
