Noone seems to understand the concept of deferred gratification and the benefits of long term study any more. Its all 'want it, have it'. That and the fact that most kids never see a live musician until they think its too late to learn (i.e. after their 16th birthday). I have watched a couple of Glastonbury/Leeds/Reading acts over the last few days and the playing of most of them is pretty poor. No lessons needed to achieve the dizzy heights achieved by the Libertines' bass player .
It used to be that playing a rock instrument well would impress the members of the opposite sex. So that 13 year-olds would suddenly take up instruments. What impresses the opposite sex at that age these days? I saw my first concert when I was 12. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. I suppose that would be against health and safety regulations these days, or there'd be an age rating on it or something.

Do Behringer do a clone of the SVT? Surely it would do the same job and cost £5.72p.
If you're asking whether we think it's important to display the Fender badge - the last half a dozen gigs I've done have been on a pretty much stock Squier Jazz. I've left my '91 Warwick Thumb at home, although I did use that when we were in the studio.
No, I wasn't thinking about the decal. I was interested in which part of the body/neck equation peole thought was more important for playability, and whether the difference in electronics was enough to override that for gigging and recording.
-
Just curious here, but imagine the following scenario. Imagine you're going to have one bass which you'll use only for practice and playing alone or with a group. No gigs, no recording. Would you prefer: 1. A bass being a Squier (say affinity) neck, and USA Fender body and electrics. or: 2. A bass which has a USA Fender neck, and a Squier Affinity body and electrics. For a follow up question, imagine a bass for gigging and recording. Which of the two options would you choose?

It should be easy to write a program that would take web pages and convert normal tabs into alpha tabs.

"Elecric Twin-Arm Bass Guitar" (it says here)
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Relisted with a £300 starting bid. It now has several bids and is finally going to sell. -

Maya Precision bass The seller says "You'd be pretty lucky to find another Maya bass to buy". That's hyperbole, but at least the bass has a low starting bid, so the market will work out the price. Unlike (6 string alert) the guy selling an "old, pre-Ibanez, CSL" LP with a £600 starting bid. -
How's the price on this? I'm going to be keeping an eye on it but don't want to pay over the odds.
I wouldn't claim to know. But, I'll take a guess. It's not original, but apart from the modifications is in good nick and it has a hard case. It seems that classic fretless basses sell for less than the fretted version. So my wild guess for the ending price will be £180 + the p&p. We'll see how accurate my guess is. Mostly my guesses tend to be on the low side. Not always though. -

ID this Fender "P" 5 string bass
Annoying Twit replied to oldslapper's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Ahem. Given the email I've just received, it seems that the person selling "Fender" basses in the links in this thread may be in some trouble. -
I appreciate the skill involved, but it doesn't do anything for me in terms of music. I like this, less technical, but more musical, even though it's basically a joke:

Then you enter: [yootube]AK9QVN0bpa4[/yootube] But with "yootube" spelt correctly. Spelt correctly, it's: Reply to this post, and you'll see all the codes I use.
Lets get Retarded/Started - Blackeyed peas. I reckon it is near perfect, Bass wise. I absolutely love playing along to it. Just wish i could get my band to be brave enough to have a bash at it!!
This is Fergie the first time she heard the Retarded/Started bassline played live.

This thread is fun! I thought of starting a thread on interesting root note only basslines, but this one might do it:

If we're allowed keyboardz, and someone's mentioned Madonna, then I'm no fan but ... I like the Borderline bassline. Edit: Is that some 80s Japanese bass with a stripey neck that's being played in Kajagoogoo? Embedding disabled by request

OK, here's a challenge. Ignoring sophisticated music, prog-rock, art-rock, etc..... what out and out pop songs have absolutely brilliant bass lines that really complement the song. Not bass-lines that make it more than a pop song, but bass lines that are perfect for the song as a throwaway light confection. I'll start, with Chip Douglas's line from "Salesman" by "The Monkees". Maybe not the middle 8 though, not so sure about that bit.
