Bassists that sound like guitarists playing bass
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
Here we go again. A 'bassists are superior' thread because we play the instrument the right way and everyone else is wrong. usual narrow minded stuff if you ask me.
If it were just bitching, then you might be right. But when there are examples posted naming songs etc., then that becomes more useful. Saying that "X is bad" by itself is useless, but saying that "X is bad and here's an example of why that is" is much more useful, as it allows readers to make up their own minds. Personally there has been a number of examples of playing here that I personally have not enjoyed. So, at the moment, I'm certainly believing that there is something to this "bassist who plays like a guitarist" thing. It seems that on this forum, there is a hesitation to post anything that's "negative". Personally I find that I learn from seeing bad examples, as well as seeing good examples of playing. I don't think people are saying that "bass guitarists are better" as a kneejerk reaction. Some time ago I started a thread discussing Steve Winwood's bass playing, which I enjoyed, even though SW is not primarily a bassist. Comment on that thread was pretty much all positive. It wouldn't be surprising that those who spend years or decades studying bass have acquired skills that those who just pick up the instrument and apply skills learnt elsewhere. If they could, then that would say something about bass guitar education! -
Lost the link somewhere in the ether, but 2 Aria Pro 11's on ebay one at £1500, one at £1850 I think. Am I missing something?
Curious. I thought even the new Japanese made ones went for about a grand.
PS Jon, your new avatar equates to cleaning bill for coffee removal from laptop
I was once walking in a Sussex town when I spotted a Chinese restaurant called "Golden Balls". The Chinese characters used for the name of the restaurant meant something different in Japanese even though literally they do say "Golden balls". I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader as to what the Japanese meaning was. PPS: Were there ever any Japanese 70s or 80s acoustic basses? -

I've heard this comment a lot, but haven't really got my head around what it means. Obviously I can spot it in extreme cases such as this: But are there examples of well known songs where the bassist is not just a guitarist playing bass, but really sounds like one too?
won it, ebay has to back you but the worst that'll happen to him if he does't send it is he'll get his account banned and have to make a new one
You won it? Please keep us posted on how things develop.

Very sad news. May I raise a virtual glass to OldGit, and wish the best for his family.

So, is anyone going to report it?

Ta Jon. I was thinking after I posted that the post made it look like I thought the bass wasn't worth £150, but I didn't get around to editing the post. I was guestimating (wildly) that it might sell for £200, but with the high start, I wouldn't be surprised to see it sell for £150 with one bid. Over in the for sale section £150 gets you this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=54995 I must admit I was tempted as I played a Korean Jackson, and thought it very nice indeed. But there is only a certain amount of money in my instrument purchasing budget and too many instruments to buy. (Though I did PM the guy selling the CMI Rickenfakerfor £50 immediately I saw it, but too late). -

I see that after all the discussion on here, that the Antoria Violin Bass "shell" has risen to the heady heights of £1.04. -
Fair point : £17.38 to list and put a reserve of £750 on it. Final value fee : 10% of winning bid, up to a max of £40 - so £40. Paypal fee : 3.4% on an assumed selling price of £800 = £27.20 So £84.58 then - a bit of rounding on my part, but still a ludicrous amount of money - over 10% of £800.
I wonder what costs ebay actually incur servicing a single auction. I'd guess that for most auctions, where there is no dispute to be mediated, the actual cost to ebay is pennies. And even when there is a dispute, we're probably talking minutes of the time of a lowly paid customer service droid.
??? You think so ? I though that playing the odd bum note and not having any sense of rythmn and general chord structure isn't really "inventive" but that's just me.
according to songfacts, Ron Wood played bass on it. Edit: Ah, other information suggests Ronnie Lane. But other info suggests that only Wood, Danny Thompson, or Andy Pyle could have played it.
This bloke manages to make it sound even worse than it is on the record - if that's possible.
Nice pickguard though.

I've now got a recording of this bass, but I haven't heard it yet (laptop has faulty audio). Will listen later this night. -
My friend sent me a link to this video today. I think it is possibly the single most ridiculous thing I have ever seen on youtube. Sorry if it's been posted before and I apologise if it upsets any of you with a weak slap-bass disposition... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_X7mMU6Gb0
Brilliant. I'm no longer the most recent person to post this on basschat. Now as long as I remember not to post links to those 17 string basses on ebay, I'll be OK.

Another one for the more DIY minded people on here? Antoria violin bass shell (apt description) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ANTORIA-VIOLIN-GUITA...ents_Guitars_CV (I won't be bidding) Bolt on? Isn't that unusual for a violin bass? -
A Shaftesbury perhaps? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RICKENBACKER-BASS-RE...S-/140440003099
It looks extremely similar to my Cimar.
I've scanned through the whole thread and can't believe (unless I've missed it) that no-one has mentioned the most abominable mis-use of a bass guitar in its long, distinguished history. I speak of the ding-a-ding-a-chucka-chuka-meep-meep bollix that was the 80's and fecking Level 42 in particular. What the bejesus was that all about? Summed up that decade perfectly, all style and panache over any kind of musical relevance. Awful, just awful, and what is worse it gave birth to a whole generation of so-called 'bassists' who to this day go ding-a-ding-a-chucka-chuka-meep-meep in music shops up and down the country (the urge to strangle the spotty nerds trying out a bass who break into some ding-a-ding-a-chucka-chuka-meep-meep is overwhelming). If you want some wacky, off-the-wall noises then get a bloody synth player. Rant over.
Is the playing here an example of what you don't like? Mark King comes in @ about 4:00.

From information about a Harmony H22 bass. http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/H22.php
1960s budget guitars were very much better than the mass-produced budget offerings of today.
Really? That's not what I've heard.
