1. It seems that Danelectro introduced the first six string bass, tuned E A G D B E, like a guitar but an octave down, in the 50s. And then Fender copied Danelectro http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401075
 2. I never knew that Danelectro makes a six string bass. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Danelectro-6-String-...96025?pt=Guitar
 3. I'll look forward to the PDF on Monday. I get confused as to what's being played without the "little dots". I'll give it another go now though. Edit: Ah, it all makes much more sense upon repetition. For the jump from 3rd to 5th in the "2nd finger" pattern, I must admit that I find it far too tempting to slide that interval What's the reasoning behind the glove you're wearing?
 4.
Bits of it certainly are. The thing that struck me was my complete inability to read any signage. I'm typically British in my foreign language proficiency (i.e. hopeless) but at least when travelling around Europe you can read signs and stuff and even have a go at pronouncing the words, even if you don't know what they mean. But Japanese is just squiggles to the uninitiated. Quite disconcerting at first.
In my case Japanese is the only language other than English that I know. So it's all been de-squiggleised.
 5.
A good point, although after 8 or 9 pages we haven't really come up with any definitive answers..... every "awful" bassist named so far has plenty of people to defend their playing. I reckon it's actually turned out to be quite a positive thread proving that everyone has different tastes.
As the OP, can I say that I'm very pleased in how this thread has developed. There have been a lot of examples of playing and players that people don't like, and I feel I've learnt from listening to them. Perhaps I could have used a less contentious title such as "Can you give me examples of professional playing that you don't like". But, perhaps then there wouldn't have been so many replies. And I've quite enjoyed seeing the IMHO reasonable debate pro and con various players.
 6. Ibanez Artist bass. Doesn't seem to have as nice a finish/grain as others I've seen, but it may be the photo. Pickup only in the wilds of Norfolk. Surely they would have made more if sold separately and the seller was prepared to post. How many people in Southampton would be bidding for that lot? Bass is a Jedson tele. For some reason my Ibanez Artist stored search on ebay seems to have stopped working. This Ibanez Artist in the USA sold for US$320, which seems a bargain. 7.
I remember reading an interview that Scott did a few years ago and man, was he saying some controversial stuff! I think most of it related to falling out with band mates on Zappa tours and waging war across the stage every night!
At least he's not a complete turnip like Warren Cuccurullo.
 8.
I thought it was Warren Cuccarullo? Vinnie was mentioned after.
sh*t, I've been believing that it was Vinnie all these years. Have you seen Waren Cuccarullo spouting off on youtube? What an idiot.
 9.
No-one's mentioned Roger Waters yet.
Even though I know it's not really difficult playing, I've always enjoyed the bass on this:
 10.
She can play but there are many players who can blow her away, but aren't getting slipped a custard by Vinnie Colaiuta.
Kinda young, kinda wow. Edit: Well, I had to make the obligatory comment after seeing the name Vinnie Colaiuta, but I've listened to this and quite enjoyed it: I haven't heard any of the hype, so perhaps that's what makes the difference.
 11. Hard to hear the bass playing here, but it sounds very basic. Upon searching for videos of Fall Out Boy live, it seems that a lot of them are by fangirls interested in Pete for reasons other than his musicianship. Language alert on this one where he somehow looks uncomfortable with his instrument, or is it just me?:
 12.
I believe John Lennon may qualify .His bassline on 'The Long and Winding Road' was full of fluffs, vague slides etc.
It does sound rather ... "hesitant". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wst1G9GZAP4
Sid wasn't your most gifted player. I think he did a decent job considering he was off his crust all the time and hadn't had more than a couple of months to learn from scratch.
Didn't Paul Simonon join The Clash six weeks after starting to learn bass? Or is than an Urban Legend?
 13.
Have you ever heard Fall Out Boy live? I quite like the band(well.....they did two good albums anyway),but when I saw them there were a number of very dodgy notes courtesy of Pete Wentz. There were times when he'd pose and hit an open string that was just all kinds wrong.
Is the playing in question present on "Fall Out Boy" "Live in Phoenix"? Or has that been cleaned up? I've heard rumours that a well known Japanese musician replaces the lead vocal of all his live albums. Which IMHO is a pity if true as I've seen him live and the vocals were fine. Back on topic. I'm hearing some less than skillful work on a live version of "I wanna be your dog" by the Sex Pistols with Sid singing.
 14.
Sid Vicious.
Which album does he play on? I thought that most of the recorded output of the Pistols had Steve Jones on bass. Does Vicious play on his own albums such as "Sid Sings"?
 15. Is there anyone from a well known band who is a truly awful bassist? There are plenty of recommendations of excellent bass players, but it's harder to find examples of poor ones. Is there any bassist and in particular album where poor quality bass playing is in evidence?
 16. Ta Jon. I don't remember seeing a green violin bass before.
 17. Antoria Jazz bass sold for £103, pickup only. Doesn't seem a bad price for the buyer, is it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

 19. Is that a backwards bass solo I've just heard on the album version of "Jack Sh*t George" from "Mr Love Pants"?
 20.
I've not heard Staring Down The Barrel - is it any good? I think Derek's a decent pick as a singer of Ian's songs but he's not such a front man and of course he won't write like Ian, which was Ian's biggest talent.
If you're in the UK, you can listen to it for yourself: http://www.we7.com/#/album/The-Blockheads/...Down-The-Barrel Personally I think it's excellent, but why accept my opinion when you can make your own mind up. DtD writes differentlly, but does do some pseudo-Ian things. "A little knowledge" is a pure "list" song like "Reasons to be Cheerful pt. 3" mixed in with There ain't half been some clever b'tards. He's witty and an interesting writer. His favourite topics are ecology/environment and the economy/class structure. When ID became more serious, the lyrics were often about himself and his own troubles. DtD is more general. I've got to be careful here as I'm wandering off topic. I did post to discuss Norman Watt-Roy's basslines, honest guv! But I must admit that it's too easy for me to slip into spamming mode as I believe that it's an excellent album that a lot of people would enjoy, and it's a shame more people haven't heard it.
I really like watching him with Wilko Johnson - he gets quite a different sound to his, recorded, Blockheads tone. Really big & punchy through a Trace rig that looks like it came out of the ark, lol.
Could you recommend a youtube video or something so that I can hear what you mean?
 21.
I'm a big fan of Ian Dury and anybody who would put up with him.
I watched the BioPic with Andy Serkis last night, and I've been listening to a lot of Blockheads music, from "New Boots and Panties" through to their recent album "Staring Down the Barrel". I"m really enjoying the bass lines. Sometimes before when I've said that I like certain bass lines, there's been the comment "sounds like a guitarist playing bass". I was curious to hear if anyone would say it here. There's an unusual sound in "George, The Human Pigeon" that I'm wondering if it's bass or not. I don't know how to describe it, but think that anyone who listens to it will know what sounds I mean. http://www.we7.com/#/song/The-Blockheads/G...he-Human-Pigeon Oh yes, there it is in the intro, and it certainly sounds like bass. That's one thing I'm enjoying with his bass playing. Even in songs with quite simple root (down) 5th root 5th, there are interesting little bits and pieces in the songs.
I'm a big fan of Ian Dury and anybody who would put up with him.
What do you think of Derek the Draw taking over the Dury role? He's clearly functioning as Dury Mk. 2. in the band, but while such a thing is usually a travesty, particularly when it was a record company decision that DtD would do all the lead vocals, IMHO with The Blockheads it works.
 22. What are people's opinions on Norman Watt-Roy. Both his playing, and his riffs and grooves? http://www.we7.com/#/song/Ian-Dury/Wake-Up...-Love-With-Me+1

 24. If this is actually worthy of note, then with the Tokai bass in another thread seemingly to be a real MIJ, that's a fairly good hit rate I've been having lately. It's been at least a few weeks since I posted something which actually turned out to be a modern Chinese bass where a classic brand name has been purchased, or something like that.
 25. I don't recognise this bass. I presume it's not an MIJ. What is it?
