Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Annoying Twit replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Thunder II with hard case, £150BIN. £80 starting bid. The BIN price looks quite a good deal to me. Pickup only in Hampshire. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-Thunder-II-E...=item4aa342d897 Edit: Only just noticed that it's a fretless. Edit: Gone! -
Unusual - two basses for £111.99
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think somebody might have been shilled out of their bargain.
The same bidder was the second placed bidder for both auctions. Though, it's an account with 310 feedback, not an account with 0 feedback. Different winners for both auctions. Not sure I'm convinced it's shill bidding. Could just be someone bidding on both. Still unusual though. -
Unusual for two basses being sold by the same person at the same time to both sell for £111.99 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Looks nice, except for the decal
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
You very rarely get a bargain on eBay anymore.
Among "golden era" Japanese made instruments, there have been some very good deals recently. But VMJ Squiers seem to keep their value very well. I can buy a new one for £227 or thereabouts in a local shop, and they frequently go for £180 or so on ebay. -

Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Sold for £237, + p&p. Clearly someone wanted it. -
I admire Trev Wilkinson's inventiveness, e.g. his recently released robot tuning bridge for strats. But, I'm not sure this converter kit where you end up with one string being tuned from the bridge, and the rest from the headstock, is one of his better ideas. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wilkinson-USA-4-5-st...=item23087dea11

Same finger different string, and emphasis

Thanks for all the replies folks. I've been reading and thinking about them over the last few days. -

Except then there's the "professionally applied" Fender decal. Not that I'd be bidding anyhow, but I find relabelled basses really off-putting.

The bass or the bassist?
Annoying Twit replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Oh dear, I didn't realise that people would rip into him quite that much. I feel a bit guilty now. -

Thanks. These comments corroborate what I've heard about Jedsons from other people. -

I have a parallel thread running on the Westone forums. It's been pointed out that the Thunder IA bass being sold for £350 was recently bought for £230. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-Thunder-1-Ba...=item19bd905f8f There seem to have been a few Jedson basses and guitars on ebay recently. I haven't heard good things about the Jedson brand though.
After a through-neck Thunder II in a genuinely uncommon finish just sold for a massive £112, this is getting into self-harmingly delusional territory!
Wow! I saw that when it was listed, and would never have expected it to sell for that little. -

Brand New Yahama BB414 4 String In Black Pearl
Just in case it hadn't crossed your mind, you could always return it and get all your money back!
He may have to pay return postage depending on what Gear4Music say in their T&Cs. Here's info on the Distance Selling Regulations which give the consumer in internet and other distance purchases the right to return products for a refund if they change their mind (and properly notify the dealer) within seven days. If you mouse over their returns policy, it says that under their 14 day return policy, they won't refund the carriage costs. Thanks. Superglue and a big unopened pot of wood glue is all we have at the moment, so superglue is the easiest option!

The binding on my Cimar Rickenfaker has come away at the end, and a short length is loose. What glue (or other adhesive) should I use to stick it back again? Also, the electronics are a bit scratchy on it. I'm planning that when I eventually change strings on it, I'll use some contact cleaner on all the pots and check the solder joints. Any advice on the best form of contact cleaner to use? That special anti-oxidation stuff?

Bass guitar for dummies recommends that even when you're playing with alternating fingers, that when you move down from a higher string to the next lower string, you use the same finger as the last note. In theory I can see how this works. You have the finger already resting on the string, you might as well use it. But, I'm slightly disappointed in that in trying to apply it, I'm having to relearn how to play all the basic modes. I definitely can see potential, once it becomes ingrained, particularly for major and minor triads, but at the moment it feels like I've taken a big step back while I learn it. Is this technique a standard technique with many advantages? Or is it a more personal thing? I suppose I'm going to go ahead with it anyhow unless there's an outcry of "that's wrong", which I doubt will happen. So I might be wasting everyone's time here. But, I'd still appreciate hearing opinions on it. Also, when putting emphasis into a rhythm, I've been practicing it alone without backing. When I listen to the example on the CD, the emphasis the author adds to notes is much more of a difference than what I've been doing, with me being comparatively subtle. I'm guessing that subtle emphasis isn't going to work on bass in a band context, as people won't be able to hear subtle differences over all the other instruments. Is this correct?
The BIN on that "Antoria"'s probably a bit much for a refin with non-original parts. Oh, and nothing to confirm the suggestion it's an Antoria in the first place.
After I posted here, I did peer closely at the headstock and noticed the lack of brand name on the headstock. It often happens that I'm initially over-optimistic about ebay listings, and it takes a bit of time for a healthy dose of cynicism to catch up. -

70s Antoria. Was a bit tempted but my gear buying budget has been going on catch-up items such as a hard case and a professional setup. I thought this looked very nice close up. I didn't try and play it, but had a close look. Not that I'd claim to really know, but I thought the workmanship looked very good, and the whole overall effect very visually pleasing. -

Thanks everybody for the JPN Squier info. BTW: This, is Korean (I think). I hadn't seen this model before. I'd previously wondered why, when Matsumoku closed down, they didn't just move the popular models elsewhere. Seems that they did. Are these really humbucker pickups? They seem a bit narror. Otherwise, does this make the good poor man's SB, erm, SB600? that it looks like? Or, with an original price of £600, is it not exactly "poor man's"?
